Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Having a go at leggings...

Longer length:

Shorter length:

(password: fabfactor)

Deep breath, okay, let's hear it:
- Can I pull off leggings in general?
- Which length do you prefer/can I do both lengths? (I'll tell you what I think later;-)

Shoes are a problem. I think the slides paired with leggings look a little tacky (it's not just the higher vamp on these, I've tried others too). Sorry no pics of the same outfit with the other shoes, I only started having doubts about this after I put away the camera.

I don't have any ballet flats, still think I look a bit dumpy in them (thicker ankles, sigh), but I've never tried them with dress + leggings...
Of the shoes I have, these looked okay (in grey)

They're a bit Wintery though. I think it's the combo of low vamp, wider toe box with the button detail and the thicker black wedge heel.

So I'm thinking a wedge heel (slingback or closed heel) with a more chunky looking nose? Or maybe something funky with a chunky stacked heel?
Or should I keep looking for a ballet flat that will suit me too? I'm always drooling over all your ballet flats. I know it's such a comfortable option!

All advice welcome.

I really really like this look on you, but since I'm only experimenting with it now myself, I am at a loss for advising on the finer points!! Will watch and learn ....

P.s. Last night we were out and about in the city (along with what seemed like EVERYONE ... it was a beautiful night) and leggings were all over the place!! Mostly long ones with tunics, but a handful of dresses with shorter leggings too. All the leggings were opaque black. I was taking notes....

Aha, I'm very pleased to hear a stylish lass like you approves Shiny!

And grin, I was doing the same thing while shopping yesterday afternoon. I only saw a handful of women wearing leggings though (all black and mostly long ones too). All of them had paired them with tunic-length dresses.

Over here I mostly still see them on younger women only. How about in your neck of the woods?

I think you can totally pull off leggings! I like the shorter ones better, I think they emphasize the curve of your calf more. Fabulous!
I agree about the slides with leggings. A wedge would look great I think, with a low enough vamp.

Yes, mostly on younger ladies.... but I'm thinking it is such a practical style for us more mature ladies too... so I'm willing to give it a whirl. I was going to go out in my new leggings last night but personally I thought it was much too hot. (90s). Today it's back down to the 60s and now it seems too cool?

KILLER. (That's two killer ratings in five minutes, Inge. The style quotient on this forum is sizzling!)

Love both legging lengths! You look fabulous! (And you know how much I love the frock). I don’t mind the slides at all! Really like the chunky wedges you linked too as well. Go for it.

I wore leggings AGAIN yesterday, under my denim skirt, with cami, fitted blouse and waistcoat (and my new Nadias). It was 75 degrees, but cold in the morning in which case I substituted a jacket. I could wear leggings up to 85 degrees, but 90 would be pushing it. I just love my leggings with those cute little biker zips. They make me smile.

My dear Inge, you have turned 180 degrees. You just got the next YLF award! In one swoop you’ve incorporated four looks you were dubious about. You gave them a chance and not only made them work but got killer ratings. That’s VERY stylish of you. Petje af!!!

Ah I much prefer this dress with leggings! It looks super on you Inge. I have a preference for the first length. I think the longer the dress/tunic gets, the longer the leggings should be, but it really is a personal thing.

I do have a preference for ballet flats with leggings. Something about the combination of leggings, tunic/dress, and flats makes me feel like a dancer, hehe. But wedges should look great too.

I love the dress with leggings! I also prefer the longer length, for reasons Maya stated. I think you can totally pull off leggings, and should try more of this look.

As far shoes, maybe try a more delicate sandal?

LOVE, LOVE the dress!! That is perfect on you, I also love it with leggings. I think that the longer look helps to keep the pattern being too separate from your skin tone, it has such drama and the leggings add a vertical connection that really works. I am so impressed!! I do not mind the shoes because the dress is the statement. I would keep it simple, you could definitely pull off ballet flats!!

I really like this dress on you, especially with the leggings (and I'm not a leggings person at all!). The dress paired with the longer leggings struck me as the best combination of the two at first, but I think you look ok with both lengths.

Great look, Inge! Beautiful dress, fun belt, and although you are having doubts about them, I even like the shoes. I have a preference for the longer leggings but you've already got Angie's approval for both lengths :)

Congratulations on your multiple "killer" ratings today!!

I also prefer the longer ones.

Have fun with your new look, Inge!

Posted 6 months ago

Agree! It looks great!

May I ask where you got the dress and what brand it is?

Posted 6 months ago

Inge, you look TERRIFIC. I love both lengths, and think you can switch off and wear whichever is feeling more comfortable. And that dress is TO DIE FOR.

Posted 6 months ago

Love it- both lengths look great, though i'm biased as i have 2 pairs the same lengths as yours x

Wow! Inge, you look AMAZING! You don't just "pull it off," you kill this look! That dress is just gorgeous and I am so impressed with your belting. I like it better with leggings than with jeans and I also like the longer length. I think it looks fine with the slides but I could see a wedge sandal working great too.

It's funny that you brought up the age factor. I guess that's one of my hesitations about wearing leggings - I have been watching the Miley Cyrus set sporting leggings (especially under their mini denim skirts) for the past couple of years. And the only people I ever see wearing them (other than on the board) are teenagers/tweens. Granted I don't live in a very fashion forward place so it would be unlikely for me to see anyone my age in anything but capris for the summer. I don't want to fall into the "mutton dressed as a lamb" category but I see how practical they can be - the MOTG threads have really demonstrated that. I am still on the fence but seeing all the great looks on the forum is definitely helping to push me over the edge.

Posted 6 months ago

Shana, I hope seeing Inge looking so amazing in leggings does push you over the edge (in a good way). Leggings are the #1 easiest MOTG look for me, and I never feel like I'm trying to look too young, and I'd like to think I have a pretty good barometer for things like that. My only caveat is that although Angie says she can wear black leggings up to 85 degrees, I only make it to about 72 degrees before breaking out in a serious sweat, so pretty soon I'll have to put them away until fall. But maybe before the weather heats up too much, you can give them a try!

Posted 6 months ago

Love it! I think both lengths look great, but the longer appeals to me more somehow. I don't have anything new to add, but I just wanted to congratulate you on trying 2 new looks, both are terrific! And I also think you should get some ballet flats :)
Enjoy!

These look GREAT! I love both lengths, and honestly, I'd base your decision on warmth because they look perfect either way. Add me in as another ballet-flats vote.

Shiny: I think my limit would be around 75 degrees. 60 degrees might be doable if I could pair the leggings with closed shoes and a warmer dress (like the one I'm wearing in the pictures). I'm with you on the age thing, 'more mature' ladies can definitely pull off leggings too. AND look très stylish;-)

Shana: I was hesitant at first too (I'm 38). But it's just such a comfortable and practical look, and after trying it out for myself, I am convinced that there are stylish ways to wear leggings if you are a little older too. Do give them a try.

Angie: WOW, a YLF award! If I had a chimney, I would print this out, frame it and put it over the chimney;-) Seriously, I am absolutely chuffed about this. And SO glad that I have all these new outfit options.

Jean: This dress is definitely the boldest item of clothing I have ever owned, and you know what, I love it!

Thank you so much for all your input ladies. I'll be wearing my leggings with pride!
(By the way, I like both lengths too and will definitely experiment some more. Also, I'm kind of warming to the slides now, but will keep looking for a sandal with a wedge heel, and maybe even ballet flats. You guys can be so convincing;-)

Inge, I didn't see this until today. I am so glad that you bumped it! You look *fantastic* in leggings and I love the tunic. That's exactly what I hope I will eventually find for myself, but it's not in the cards this year. Thanks for inspiring me to keep working with this look and for offering your advice on the dresses/skirts that I posted.

Posted 5 months ago

Inge, late to the party, but had to stop by to say you more than carry off both lengths! And please let me join the chorus in telling you absolutely fantastic that tunic is and how your wearing it has taken it up a notch!

Posted 5 months ago

Kari and Vani, I'm thrilled that you like my new look! The dress was definitely a fantastic find, and now that I know it looks good with leggings (and jeans) I can finally start wearing (and enjoying) it.

Posted 5 months ago

Also late reader :)
I love the first length with the dress and the dress is as good as everyone else says - something about the colors and print being a perfect mix. Looks GREAT on you!

Shoes - I get why you want a little heel for proportion and with dress length I might agree. A slim wedge would be so cool. I like the idea of a bit of heel but a sleeker shoe with this look - too chunky would send a mixed message?

A gladiator sandal or ballet flat might work well though - can you wear the outfit to a shop and just try some things on?

Inspiring!!
