An acquaintance posed the question on Facebook of whether other people hang out their underwear, bras, etc. to dry on the clothes line. Most people responding seemed to feel that this is gross, or that we should be ashamed to let the neighbors catch a glimpse of our bras.

I felt like a bit of a freak because it would never in a million years have occurred to me to hide my underwear in the house to dry instead of putting it out on the line with everything else. I might feel a slight twinge of embarrassment if I'm folding my clothes at the laundrette and pull out a pair of underwear that should have been retired long ago, but that's it.

And then I was chatting to a neighbor yesterday and somehow the subject of ironing came up. She said that she is getting old now and no longer bothers to iron the socks. I was a bit dumbfounded to learn that it is apparently common practice to iron socks and underwear.

I know that I'm a bit lax in the ironing department -- I only iron things when it is absolutely necessary. I take after my Mom in this respect, who refused to iron Dad's Air Force uniforms because they had to meet a precise standard or else he'd be reprimanded. Consequently he has been taking his work clothes to the dry cleaner since 1970, even though he retired from the military and has been working for private contractors for decades. But still, who irons socks?

Am I truly a weirdo?
