Half Way!! - YouLookFab Forum

Hi Fabbers,

Well I am just over half way through my September shopping fast! So far so good. I am pleasantly surprised by my resolve and am holding fast with very little resistance. This is a completely different experience to when I previously resolved to shop my closet for a month. I think I lasted two days lol.

I have still been online browsing and even visited a couple of bricks and mortar stores... and even tried on some things... but left very happily empty handed.

What I have been doing is keeping a small file of items I am interested in. Of course, there is the chance I might miss out if I wait but I am ok with that. As I ponder each item, I find myself either increasing my desire for it, or loosing interest all together.

So I thought I would share what's in my file, and my current thoughts regarding each:

#1 Metalicus Marlini Drape top in Cobblestone (blue)
I have this in black and it's fabulous. I expect to wear it A LOT as it gets
warmer. Duplicating in the blue would be a good move.. I think:)

#2 Metalicus Marlini Drape Skirt in black
Tempted and it looks great worn with the Marlini top, but I am not wearing
skirts a lot and am wondering if it would be a wise addition.

#3 Target Draped Trench Coat in Black
Spotted this in Target today on a mannequin when I was returning a faulty
hairdryer. I blame Lyn D as it reminded me of her fab new Trenery coat.
I think I will go back and try it on. It could replace my current Dressy
Satin Trench, which is black with white piping.

#4 Wite Ink Shirt Dress
Love the asymmetric hemline, and the colour and I would imagine this
would be easy to dress up or down and it looks super comfortable.
On the downside, it has a collar (which I don't wear) and it has pockets
on the chest.. this is something I might consider stalking to sale.

The other thing I have been considering with all my free non-shopping time:) is WHAT do I really want in my closet and WHERE do I want it to come from. As you know I am a little obsessed with Rick Owens!! and I thought one of my goals was to buy something of his. Well in a way it still is. In fact in a recent conversation, DH very sweetly said if we win lotto or our investments make good, I could go ahead and order a RO's leather jacket *sigh*. But for the most part, what I really want is to support local designers and brands. It's easy to assume that the best things are found elsewhere but we have an abundance of fabulous and established brands, labels and designers and many fab independent and upcoming designers. So I have decided to start researching those more and try and really focus my custom locally and Australian made if possible.

So there it is!

Please don't feel compelled to comment, but of course do if you want to:) My naval gazing might be a bit dull but I am finding it helpful to put this in writing and record for future reference.

Stay strong, Debs, but have to tell you I love all your picks..:-((. I esp. love the black trench. In fact I need to replace mine, too- which is 7 yrs. old-and was wondering which color to be next. Simple all black was doing soo good for me, so why change? I decided I want the same fabric, and cut but don't find it anymore...(definetelly not a plain 100% cotton as I never liked a matte finish, and would have to be waterproof!). Love the longer length and the dramatic collar, mine was a stand up one, with a long zip on front, but still elegant. Sigh.

Your resolve is admirable as is your plan to just make notes and think more carefully about future purchases. All of your possible new buys look great! The only thing I will say is make sure you're sure about the shirt dress as it has a collar, though I do feel that the drapey softness of the fabric helps a long way to how the collar falls and how it feels on. Stalking to sale is a great plan for it. Stay strong, not too long now Deb.

I love 1, 2 and 3 - indeed I love 3 so much I might pop out to have a look at it!

#4, I don't love it so much, but it might look good styled. Never say never....

You are doing great! I think #1 and #3 would make wise buys. Your lack of skirt wearing and collar wearing puts me off #2 and #4.

Good for you for sticking to it and for not having too many cravings. It is a lot like dieting isn't it?

I really like all of your wish list items. Particularly the top and skirt which I think would work really well together.

Good for you. I always find once I tell myself I can't have something, I want it all the more. I am so contrarian!

Still, it gives you time to really think through what you want, how it will play with wardrobe, and how it will work with your life.

Debs...it's so satisfying to say no to wantsies!

Re your stalking list....duplicating the metalicus top in blue is good esp if you find yourself reaching for the black and wishing for another color.

I would wait on the skirt until you find yourself at least twice wishing you had a skirt to wear. In high summer you may want it.

It's going into summer...skip the trench. The fall will bring more treasures.

The dress is a good silhouette on you. The collar issue makes stalking to sale a good strategy.

Congrats on your navel gazing...errrr...introspection.

The coat and the blue dress seem the most worth it to me. The others are a little like items you already have... stay strong!

I am doing much the same thing this year. I put things in a cart or bookmark and continue to visit every now and then. When the pull is just too great, I order. Sometimes it's a letdown once it comes, and right back it goes. But the waiting helps you decide what you really want vs passing fancies.

Yes, you have proven many times that there are some astonishingly cool Australian designers out there. (Too the point where we are jealous of your access to them.) So in that vein, I'm extra proud of you for holding strong, Deb. And I can see how you don't buy things randomly. The thought is reflected in the end results. Good luck with slowly rounding out your wardrobe.

Will come back, but I did see the Marlini on deep sale at Myer when I bought my cardigan (!)
Love the dress too but resisted looking till October...

I'm right there with you. I have 10 days left for my one month of my shop free bargain with my DD. This is my first go round. It's been tough so I can appreciate your struggle especially the first time. I have also been looking online and going to some brick and mortar stores. The hardest part for me has surprisingly (or not) been shoes! I just can't stop myself, but I have so far. They are just on hold waiting for me! It's all good, because I have learned a great deal, and may continue this for another month, once I have made my purchases that is!
