Hair growout: slow and steady...

I am gritting my teeth to be done with this process! My stylist is chopping out as much of the weird red as she can - no idea what it's from, some faded old color? The black is my natural shade. Anyway, this is where it is now. I wish it was more grey! But it's so so freeing not to have to color!

It is looking really beautiful! It looks like you will have natural high and low lights. I will look very unique and I bet everyone starts asking where you have your hair 'coloured'.

The red isn't too distracting, but I can understand that you just want to get to the finishing line. Your natural colour is beautiful, and, yes, it is freeing to be done with the whole colouring process. You'll soon be there.

Years ago my hair stylist convinced me I needed to "cover the gray" in my dark brown hair with blond highlights. So I spent years with expensive yellowish stripes in my hair. LOL

I finally woke up one day when my stylist went overboard with highlights, and basically painted my entire top layer of hair blond. I realized how terribly unflattering the blond was on me. Surely my natural gray couldn't look any worse than that dreadful look.

So that was my last-ever hair color appointment. As soon as my hair grew out a few inches, I had all the colored hair chopped off with a pixie cut. And I discovered that my sprinkling of white hair in the dark brown is actually a pretty highlight on its own. Now I'd never color my hair again, and I'm glad to see more white coming in!

Yours has been just stunning at every stage of your grow-out, and I'll look forward to seeing how it ends up!

It's so beautiful and has been at every stage. I've just noticed that my grays have started to come in in much greater numbers...but I'm not ready to let them.

Your hair looks thick and healthy and the color is great. In this part of the country, letting hair go grey is so rare that it is sort of subversive and fun. Probably more shocking than a nose ring, which have become common and boring.

As you know I'm growing out my grey too..it is definitely in that transition phase and challenging to stay with it...I look at it every day and question my decision. At this point I also feel like I have a rainbow of hair color shades in my hair! I will upload a picture soon

I'm so terrified of the day when I finally give in to the greys. I don't really like the idea of a pixie cut for me (another small head person here who feels self-conscious with short hair), so I don't know how the heck I'll deal with it when the time comes, especially with my wavy/curly hair. I so envy sleek straight hair this time of year, when the humidity renders mine a frizzy mop!

The first thing I noticed was the bits of red and how much I liked that! So by chopping most of it but by leaving bits of it, it looks really interesting. It looks more intentional.

Denise, not a lot of comments on the color, but people often compliment the cut. I'm trying to assess how I feel about it, and what I think people are thinking when they see me now. Like, am I becoming more invisible? Gaining or losing anything intangible? I'd love to hear from those of you who made this transition and what people said. It's not as striking a change as I expected, but that was my idea - to do it before it was too much of a shock. Please be honest if you see it in my WIWs and think it's really aging me. I don't mind looking my age but I don't want to look older than my age.

I love your grey!

I went grey a couple years ago. Most people my age don't have such white hair (my stylist calls it platinum). As a result, some people think I'm older than I am, but look young for the age they think I am. I'm finding old men (approaching my father's age) trying to engage me in conversation when that never happened before.

I agree that your hair is gorgeous right now and it works well with your style. I'm in the process as well, and it is a pain. If I knew then what I know now, I would have never colored it.

I don't think gray hair is necessarily aging--the hairstyle is important too. If a woman has a dated or "I've given up" hairstyle, she's going to look older whether she dyes it or not.

Speaking of hair color, I noticed quite a few older men with dyed hair in Paris. It generally doesn't look good--all one color, flat. They should leave a bit of gray at the temples.

Yes that was the issue for me - flat was unnatural and weirdly seemed more aging. highlights too much work!
