Hi Ladies,

Despite some razored texturising recently to create a more tapered look to my bob, I find myself questioning just how modern and up to date my hairstyle is.

For some time I have been considering a shorter cut. Not a pixie but more a short variation on the bob with length at the face for softness.

I have attached some pictures of Kate Lanphear's cut as this is what I am thinking of. Please note that I am NOT considering going that blonde - been there, done that - nor am I wanting to emulate her overall style... I just love the cut.

#1 and #2 is the look I am most attracted to. Great shape, volume and could be 'neat' for the office and more relaxed otherwise.

I believe I have an oval shaped face and therefore can (in theory) wear most styles.

Your honest feedback would be much appreciated. On one level this is a big decision, yet on another, I know it would grow back quickly if I wasn't totally happy:)

I dont know anything about this, but here is my opinion.

I can't imagine a more updated look. It has nice volume! i think its trendy and edgy.Does it fit your style? If that is what you are looking for, i would go for it!

Yes, I really like the idea. I think it would really suit you plus it is a bit more modern than your current classic look. However be assured that you current hairdo does look great.

I love your current hair but I think you would look great in this new one. It is edgy, fun, and probably easy enough to maintain (maybe easier??). I vote 'go for it' I finally took the jump and chopped most of mine and get lots of love from those around me, who were very doubtful before.

This cut looks very current to me and would be flattering on you. Your hair looks like it would take this cut very nicely, you don't have waves and curliness that some of us suffer from! Give it a go, and if you don't like it you'll be able to quickly grow it out -- but I think you'll look fantastic!

Melissa, thanks! I think it would works with my style which Angie has described as Elegant Electic... I have elements of classic, arty and edge.

Carol, thank you. I think I tend to get bored with my hair and I find the only styles I am happy with are variations on the bob.

Jayne, great endorsement for going shorter. Your hair looks fab.

Agnes, thanks, last thing I want to look is "try hard" I really want something that looks 'me".

Ginkgo, I will let you in on a secret... I have quite wavy/curly hair, but I am very good at managing it and keeping it straight Thanks for your thoughts, I really appreciate them.

Deborah, I love the idea of the cut for you. It would add that modern edge you are drawn to; my only concern would be that it can look a bit helmet-ish - it would need the right product to prevent this imo.

Good point Caro. I wonder if its more the cut that would prevent the helmet look? My hair is very fine but I have a lot of it:) It also has good 'movement'. I would definitely talk this through with my hair stylist:)

I have trouble if has it falls in my eyes a lot but I see a lot of potential in trying something like her cut, giving you more asymmetry and layers. Less of a straight Bob and maybe more dynamic somehow. A good stylist could help modify it for your hair texture or suggest how to go in that direction.

I think it will be fun!

Deborah - I think this is a fantastic style for you! Whilst I think you have currently have a great classic cut, this one fits your style inspirations to a T!

In fact, I like it so much that I am actually forcing myself to not pick up the phone and call my stylist for an appointment... I am definitely pinning it to be shown at my next cut!

Deborah, you have such gorgeous hair, and I think you would look fabulous no matter how it's styled. Love the look you posted, current with a bit of edge. It looks like it would work well with thick hair like yours, but I would bring this up with your stylist to make sure.

I have no hair sense but if your stylist says this would work for your hair I say try it! Your hair looks great now, but this looks likes a fun update. You definitely have the face for it!

I'm going to be the lone dissenter and dissuade you from this style. Not because you wouldn't look great, but because I've had this cut before and found it very difficult to style. The not-quite-pixie, not-quite-bob length is what makes it tough. My hair type is fairly similar to yours -- fine, but a lot of it.

You would look amazing in this, Deb. I love it.

I do worry about keeping it styled properly. Depends on how much time you can put into it. I agree with Stacey that this in-between length can be quite tricky to manage and keep looking sharp.

First of all Deborah, your current hairstyle is lovely on you and NOT dated at all - so don't worry about that.

I have no doubt that you would look equally stunning in this cut your showing us and it would add a bit more edge to your style, if that's what you're looking for.

Like Stacey and Suz have mentioned, this is a tricky length and may require a bit more work than you are doing now. If you are willing to put in a bit more time with your hair, I think this would look stunning on you.

I also think you'd look fabulous in this style! I have no advice re: styling issues, since I've never had my hair that short, but I'm almost positive there will be a handy-dandy styling product that will help keep it's shape and 'where' you want it.

editing to add: I recently tried this styling product (on the advice of a hair stylist in a salon while I was out of town) - as my bangs were flipping all over the place and just not behaving...

My hair is already straight (like yours) but for some reason my bangs were going all wonky, most likely due to higher humidity and/or cowlick hassles. Anyway, I was impressed at how well it worked to put my hair in the place I wanted it and stay there. Just something to file away if you do get this fab new cut and need something to style it with.

I too love it! Your hair now is great. This is equally great, with a lot of edginess.

I'm so definitely saving this. My hair isn't quite long enough to get cut into this - but when it gets there, I want something a lot like this.

It looks like a slightly edgier, messier (it seems to be in her face a lot in these photos), but more modern version of what you have - which seems great, provided your hairdresser thinks it will work for your hair type - and provided you are ready for that change.

That;s why I think it's more of a discussion with the stylist. What elements of this cut appeal to you and how much can be translated to your hair and your maintenance tolerance. That works better than just, "cut my hair like this".

Your current style looks classic, not particularly modern. Mind you, I think you look great now. If you want a more modern/edgy look, you should go for it! It's not a lifetime commitment- it will grow back if you don't like it.

I am not fond of KL's hair style. I prefer yours by a billion percent. KL has RATE hair and you are polished in the extreme. It's going to feel odd is my hunch. Plus all that hair in your lovely face is just not you. You are chic. KL is stylish for sure, but not what I would call "chic". Anna Wintour is chic.

I vote more mod and sleek. By all means go shorter, but may I suggest a more polished do and no long wispy fringe.

I hope that makes sense. As always, take my opinion for what it is worth to you. No worries either way. It's just hair - that grows back fast

Have a go! Cuts like this grow out quickly, so if you don't like it as well, you won't have long to wait. I do think you'll need more frequent cuts, and may have a little learning to do to style it effectively. The only downside might be hair in the eyes. The upside? So modern and chic!

Small point: I normally wear a version of the bob. I brought a somewhat similar picture to my hairdresser once. He was concerned about how the hair is cut around the ear with length in front and behind the ear, rather than covering the ear like a bob. I didn't see the big deal and we went ahead. I ended up not liking how it grew out around the ear (and that's within my 6 week hair appt schedule). Went back to my normal bob. Still love this look though, might try it again sometime! But the ear thing was something I didn't "see" when I looked at photos that my hairdresser did. Nothing wrong with my ears either, they're small and I would actually like to show earrings more often...

I LOVE the haircut you are considering. Go for it!

The nice thing about hair is that it grows back. People often agonize over hairstyle changes, but this is one area where I think we should take risks. An awesome 'do is a key element of great style. You can't find an awesome new 'do if you don't experiment a little. And if it sucks? Well, it'll grow back.
