Gift ideas for a 50th

Can you help me with ideas for a special gift for my dear friend's 50th. We were at uni together, then worked together when our kids were little, and she was the person who got me up each morning after Mardi's accident.

I would like to spoil her a bit as things are a bit rough for her right now even though she keeps on smiling smiling smiling. She loves Hampton style and pretty things but already has a house full of stuff. Any ideas?

An experience (with you) would probably be more meaningful than more "stuff". Although we often get our 50 year old friends one of those Pandora style bracelets and have everyone contribute a charm to it, to get her started. (There are 7 of us).

Take her away and make some fun memories I say!
Skydiving? Scuba? A road trip to a nice place overnight, with dinner and and adventure of some kind?

Agreeing with Kim about a trip &/or an adventure. My favourite gifts are theatre, ballet or opera tickets, especially when the person buying them comes with me :).

Yes, definitely book an experience...short getaway trip, spa day, tickets, etc. Whatever you can both enjoy.

Another idea: how about breaking it up into several different events so that she has a birthday event and something else to look forward too. This way you can treat her without her protesting or feeling as though she owes you.

I love booking an extravagant spa type activity for big milestones. I did this recently for a friend who turned 70 and it was so much fun as we did it together. Mani-pedi, massages, etc. We did this in our hometown, but it could be even more fun if you book it at even a mini-destination (doesn't have to be the Riviera, for me living in LIncoln, Neb., it could be Kansas City or Omaha) and add tickets to a concert or overnight at a posh hotel. If she is the kind of person who particularly doesn't spend on this type of mini-luxury, then this could be very welcomed and fun. What a kind and thoughtful person you are.

I also love the spa experience. So relaxing, plus the effects linger. Massage, facial, mani/pedi, and champagne lunch. With Xmas coming, some places may be giving special deals, like a twofer. (Hint hint - both of you could celebrate together) Oh, now I could really use a spa day.

I agree that a special experience gift would be great. Spa day, theatre date, high tea -- whatever she would love and would make her feel pampered.

Could you make it possible to go back in time and relive something you did together in college or wished you could do when you had little ones? A road trip to your college? A weekend a beach cabin? A movie marathon?

Thank you for the ideas!! One option is to get a bunch of old colleagues together and go to this nice Hamptons style restaurant she loves for brunch. But you are also making me think we could go and get our makeup done etc, do drinks and go to the theatre - I know she REALLY would love that... Off to plot...

A few years ago for my birthday, a couple friends took me out to lunch, and one of them gave me this book. We passed it around, read it aloud, and laughed until we cried. It's not really porn. It's just pictures of men vacuuming and stuff like that.

I love to picture you plotting. The gift of experiences beckons to me also: not making quite enough time for such adventures with dear friends is something I am trying to remedy. Good that you have each other.

I thought I would give an update on my friend's birthday which is tomorrow. As it happens her daughter will graduate from university so she will be celebrating for that as well with her family. Yesterday her husband put on a surprise lunch at her favourite restaurant with her 5 best friends as far back as school... it was a total surprise and we had the most amazing time and forgeous food, wine and cake. I ended up deciding to give her the gift of time as she organises graduations, her husband's birthday next week and a very big christmas at her house the week after by giving her a cleaner for a day so she can relax for the festivities. I also gave her a little Jenny Wren garden ornament for her garden so she can know her friend Jen thinks of her as she relaxes and potters around... I think it worked out well in the end so thank you for hearing me out and letting me bounce some ideas around with you.
