Gift for Master's Degree?

Our son's significant other has earned her master's degree in education. We'd like to give her a nice gift. I'm really stumped for an idea. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'd like it to be really nice yet also useful, if possible.

Depending on her living situation, sometimes lovely glasses are appreciated ie wine glasses or tumblers.

She may need a new wardrobe ( especially if her degree is in administration) and might appreciate a Nordstrom, or some similar store, gift card. I like kerlyn's idea as she will be using a bag .

If it has been a long haul for her, maybe a day out, may be learning a new activity, like painting or sketching, doing something completely different (and away from books!).

Chewyspaghetti, that's another nice idea. Someone gave me a Cross pen when I passed my CPA. I loved it, it was so elegant. But then someone stole it at a conference.

Great ideas. I had a friend who was given a beautiful leather tote bag when she finished her PhD. The tote bag was monogramed. She loved the bag but hated the monograming. Just saying. I am not big on monograming myself.

My favorite graduation gift (or baby gift, or significant birthday gift) is a simple silver bracelet that can be engraved with the date and a message. I get mine in Williamsburg VA from the Master Craftsmen Shop :

There are many types to choose from - the one above is the most popular. I got my first bracelet on our first visit to Williamsburg when I was 14. I have about 8 of them (assorted styles) commemorating Girls' Weekend with my Mom and sister, wedding, birthday etc.. I ended up going to college at the College of William & Mary, and on May 13 will celebrate my oldest son's graduation from W&M. He is defending an undergrad thesis on May 4 -- so, now what to get him?

When my son graduated from college, I was taking a jewelry making class at our local junior college. I made him sterling silver cufflinks that were his initials, with the lost wax technique.

I've noticed that several fabbers like these Longchamp bags. This young woman, in addition to getting her master's in education, is also a world traveler. I thought this particular bag would be useful for toting papers or as a carryon bag. I ordered the gunmetal. And if she wants a different color, she can exchange it. I hope you think this is something special.

Laurie, I've bought engraved bracelets at that very same Williamsburg shop for baby gifts. It's always a great gift idea. I've recently seen bracelets on Etsy with the special date engraved in Roman numerals. Same idea, just a little twist. Congratulations to Danny on his upcoming graduation and good luck with the thesis!

Those are great bags. Did you know they can be washed in the washing machine? So great for travel. I like the gunmetal a lot!

Now that the shower gift is sorted, I need to come up with something for my graduate - younger daughter will finish law school next month. Traditionally we have asked the girls to choose their own graduation gifts for college and grad school, but this time she is dropping absolutely NO hints. So I'm going to be re-reading this for some ideas.

I thought the traditional gift for a law school grad was a leather briefcase. Maybe a suit or gift certificate for a work/interview outfit.

Janet, the business world is so much less formal than it was when we started out. She has two suits and a leather tote, acquired for interviewing and summer clerkship - and those should be sufficient for the first couple of years. Most days she'll wear a top and skirt or pants, and keep a random jacket hanging on the back of the door for an unexpected court appearance.

My husband suggested an iPad - I think she might enjoy that.
