Getting my head around pullovers

Angie's other suggestion on my thread asking for advice about how to complete my work were

"Fitted short black jacket

Pullovers - do you wear them in OZ? I see blouses and knitted tops only."

My other thread is about the jacket - this one is about pullovers.

I like the idea of pullovers, especially because I run cold, but can't quite work out how to fit them into my work wardrobe - particularly with my new midi length skirts which I generally wear with a tucked top.

I tried this one out yesterday (just with a skirt from the shop) It looked too terrible tucked to even take a photo, and this was probably bigger than nomal size. I quite liked it as a top to wear casually with jeans, but not sure it works here.

Would love to hear your thoughts both on this and pointer on where to go with the pullover search

So I 'm not sure about this, and I'm interested to see what others say. Maybe it's the color (I might like it better if the top were black or white), maybe it's the broadness of the top across the shoulders compared to the narrowness of the hem (which could then be the angle of the photo). I do often wear outfits like this, but I usually go more monochromatic.

Hmmm, I think the fit is off:( Colour is lovely tho. I think it's too thin and not substantial enough so it has no shape.

I do find sweaters/pullovers/jumpers quite challenging to find. I just bought a very cool v neck with zips similar to #1. Not to thick but a nice weight so it falls well.

I am not sure where to suggest. Big W have some nice jumpers at the moment. Reasonable quality and look quite nice and modern. Have a look at Suzanne Grae, they often have nice knitwear.

I don't think it looks bad, but think it would work better if the top and skirt were close to the same colour, and if you wore stacked heels. They needn't be high. But I like effect of the slouchy, longer-at-back pullover with a skinny skirt. It's a relaxed, 'effortlessly cool' vibe.

E - still working on getting some heels!! I agree they'd be better. I quite like the vibe you mention too - but I also think it isn't work appropriate for my workplace - possible exception for casual fridays

Would be better in a more monochromatic colour scheme and proportions look a bit off here (though the angle makes it hard to say). Check Angie's posts about wearing a pullover with a pencil skirt. Most of the ones she shows are welted pullovers. I do think this type can work as well on a rectangle or IT if you get proportions right.

I prefer welted or body con pullovers, especially for wearing over skirts. And mid hip length works best on me.

I think you'll look great in the right pullover, but this one seems too thin & boxy, at least with that skirt.

This is kind of a big leap into super fashion-y, it looks more like something a blogger would pose in than something actually wearable.
I can't get excited about oversized or shapeless for you either Anne, you really have the cutest little figure and you'll have plenty of time, years from now, when you may be less trim, to go that route.
I do think you would look great in something with details that make it look more current than a traditional style, and I like the longer length, but I don't think this is the best answer.
I also think if you're going with an unusual style sometimes it's better to choose a neutral color?

Agree with E on this one. I prefer a more feminine silhouette in general, and my opinion is that this particular style of pullover looks better with skinny pants.

Concept is good, Anne. Pullover is a little too long for the skirt, which is accentuated by its high contrast.

Hello. I think you look great. I love the relaxed, insouciant look of a fluid knit over a pencil skirt. However, I can see a more neutral colour would be more versatile and make the outfit less casual. Also, that particular pullover looks a little big around the shoulders. As you are in Australia, have you looked at Witchery? I like their knitwear (sorry, but I don't understand the difference between a pullover and a knit!) and its 20% off at the moment. Confession: I just purchased this one.

I think this particular pullover is not structured enough for you Anne. Meaning the hem and way it falls is too slouchy and RATE. I see you in something little shorter with a neater hem and a fabric that keeps its shape.

Keep trying. I like skirts with shorter pullovers best. My favorite combination is a light grey pencil skirt with a pale grey open knit pullover with banded bottom worn over a tucked tank or shirt, depending on the weather. Look for something that is about waist length and banded at the bottom for structure.

Anne don't count out stores like Valley Girl. I would keep looking as their stock turn over is very fast. One of my favourite jersey tunics is from there:) And given their demographic they will no doubt have some cool sweaters for winter. I have been keeping an eye on them lately:)

I agree the sweater is not structured enough around the shoulders and/or is too long. It's a shame your pics hide the top part, because I suspect this is where this could be fixed.

But first, add some heels. It will change the whole look and allow you to wear looser fit sweaters over your beautiful pencil. Go for heeled booties! Heels do not need to be very high either. The booties you have on here are super cute, but the top then would need to be a bit shorter.

Then, a jewel around the neck, or a scarf. Something to attract the eye upwards. Alternatively, I would see a simple low pendant that would provide a visual straight vertical line.

Another thing to try: a shorter vest over it (to go all layered out!). It might work.

Thanks Anne for this thread. Jumpers are my worst thing to buy ( well, not quite, there are always swimmers! ) But I find them tricky. I often find quality an issue too. Neat little office knits are fine but anything looser or more "weekend" seems complicated - I often find they pill quickly. And it doesn't seem to matter how much I paid! I've almost gone cheaper on knits now, wear them for a season and toss.

I think a long top over long skirt is too much "long".

Maybe a shorter pullover with your skirt length, or a shorter skirt with your long pullover.

Also the skirt's contrasting hem panel makes a pretty strong visual statement that doesn't seem to connect to the color of the pullover.

So I'm thinking a shorter pullover that echoes either the top part of the skirt (which would give you a long line look), or echoes the bottom part of the skirt (breaking up your vertical line, but possibly giving the outfit a kickier look).

I love pullovers. I find these types of longer skirts look better on me when I wear a long, maxi style cardi and a top rather than a jumper. I prefer jumpers with around knee length or just above skirts, for me. For long skirts, like a few inches from the ground, I am happy to wear an oversized jumper and have it long over long - it seems to look deliberate when it's double long. Country Road have some examples of this.

AM, a welted pullover is one that has a different type of knit at the bottom (and sometimes cuffs) that pulls it in so it sits on your hips rather than falling straight.
