Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Found a unique coat... yay or nay? And question for the UK ladies.

I stumbled upon this coat from UK retailer Dorothy Perkins (pictures below) and it's unique and I like the concept of the coat, but first I have questions:

- Would the tiered skirt make me look bigger? Would this style work or no?
- How do UK sizes run? I'm about a US 16 so I'd be inclined to get the UK 22, the biggest size they have, because I fear the sizes run small? Thoughts?
- One of the coats is listed as "orange" but to my eyes the coat is more of a citron/yellow. Am I lost in translation here?

Firstly WOW what a gorgeous coat, my first thoughts were do they deliver to Dubai, and seconldy don't be mental when could you wear it lol! It is very unique I love it. I have no idea if the tiers would add bulk I suppose it would depend on how heavy the fabric is and how many layer there are.
As for the sizing I remember them being fairly standard sizes, certainly not made on the small side. I would buy my normal size from there not like some places that I might size up. I think a U.S 16 is a 20 uk buy perhaps the 22 would would allow you to wear an extra layer under if its particularly cold. Hope you get it, look forward to seeing some pictures of it.

It's really cute. I'm not sure about the bulk. I can't bring myself to wear my Betsy Johnson raincoat with the bubble hem because it makes my behind look so large, so I do think some designs are hard to wear if one has full hips. But this one might work.

I find that UK sizes are generally 1 1/2 sizes smaller compared to US sizes, so if you tend wear some 18s I would suggest ordering the 22, but if 14s sometimes fit you, you might do better in the 20, or possibly the 18. It's best to measure yourself and check their size charts.

The second coat is a citron yellow and perplexingly labled both ochre and orange. I would judge color by the photo, not the label, in this case.

I'm never sure with tiered things whether they accentuate or hide but it's a lovely coat
Dotty P's are pretty standard for uk sizes neither running small or large.
I'm also seeing citron colour on my monitor not orange as listed. It's not in my local store so i can't advise what the colour looks like in real life :-( x

I only see purple and ochre (which I love). Did you misread ochre as orange? Can't tell if it will hide or accentuate as Louise says, but I think it has potential. It's super cute. Are you prepared to return it if it doesn't work out?

Edit: I see now. It says ochre in one place and orange in another. It's definitely a mistake.

BTW this just occurred to me: do you think it will be long enough for you?

It's a beautifully unique coat but will probably have to be tried on to see what the overall look is on you. You would certainly want a skinny layer under it as shown. It has the big collar that Angie recommends though, and the gathered sleeve at the shoulder should work well for you too.

Marianna, I really like the coat. My only concern would be is it a ton of money to return/ exchange if it doesn't work out ? If it is not the same cost of the coat to return LOL - then I would go for it. It is a statement piece to me. I really like it and I like the colors. Great find!

Gorgeous coat Marianna, I also find DP true to size.

OH, beautiful. I think the only way to answer the fit questions is to try it on. So I think it'll be important to study the return policy carefully and decide whether it's worth the risk for you.

Marianna, that's a beautiful coat! I don't know the answer to your question about the tiering but hopefully Angie will chime in.

Marianna- that is a fabulous coat. I would be wary though of those ruffles. I would think that coat would be great for a rectangle or inverted triangle, but maybe not so much for the other body types. Can you photoshop yourself into the coat?

Fabulous coat, Marianna, will definitely brighten up the winter days. I want one too:).

I LOVE the collar and colours! And I could eat the citron version up. But I am not completely confident with the ruffle-y part though. It’s the type of coat style that’s either going to look KILLER, or disastrous. I know I’m not helping :0(

I think this coat will add too much volume.. the ruffles are not flattering!

Hi

I have tried this coat on and it was not a flattering fit on me as the first layer of ruffles started on my bust line, rather than underneath it. I am reasonably big in the bust (D cup), so if you are flatter chested it might not be a problem.

I tried on a UK 14, the 16 was a slightly better fit for the ruffles, but was too big in the shoulder.

The citeron colour is a lot brighter than shown on the website.

I am also looking for a coat that I can wear to work and the majority of the time I wear with skirts and dresses, this coat would look better with skinny jeans.

londonkiwi -- thanks for your input! How tall are you? I am flat chested but I have a belly, so my worry about the ruffles is that the volume will just accentuate my volume. Did you feel that the coat ran true to size? What do you think of the citron color? Is it more of a yellow or green?

Hi

I am 5'4", so I think a lot shorter than you. As others have said, DP does run true to size. I think that the ruffles would have a tendancy to stick out as they weren't that soft. DP has a sale on at the moment and there are a lot of these coats on sale, which I think says something about the fit (or maybe the colours as they are bright!)

I tried on the coat in pink. I don't suit yellows (and also don't really like them). The citron is yellow rather than greenish.

Any luck yet? I put some suggestions in your yellow coat thread. :)

Thanks Mamapicklejuice -- I looked at your suggestions and I really like the first pink Old Navy coat you linked to! I may see if I can try it on in the store. I know their sizes fit me. :)

Otherwise, no, no luck yet. Thanks for checking in! :)

Marianna, I saw this jacket in store today, the colour is more lime green than pictured, it is also a very light weight wool, almost felt like. I don't think it would be warm enough for Chicago.

Have you found a coat yet?

Posted 1 week ago

Julie, no I haven't found a coat yet. I decided to pass on this one because it wasn't a guaranteed good fit, an I didn't want to hassle with shipping it back. I saw an adorable coat at TJ Maxx last night, but the sleeves were too short. Quite the downer!

I just had to say how fabulous is YLF? Someone in the States can see a coat online and within hours someone in Europe has checked it out in-store for her. Seriously, where else?!?
