Can I make belts work?

Before I give up on belts altogether I thought I'd try experimenting with a couple of funky belts that were ridiculously cheap at Target. Please let me know honestly if this isn't flattering. If I shouldn't bother trying this look, I'm not out any money as long as I keep the tags on & return them.

I think your waist looks small and hourglassy with the belts. Nice!

Maybe these tops are more fitted than the cardi in the previous photos?

I really like how both look with the cardigans but not in the pictures without the cardigans. But I personally haven't figured out how to wear a belt so please don't take my opinion too seriously.

Okay, this is good - it sounds like I'm starting to get there.

Cricket, the cardigans featured here are more fitted at the waist than the pink one I tried out last time, but the brown cardi shown in this post is exactly the same as the black and white print one. Maybe this look works better with a dark colored or solid cardigan? I'll have to keep trying.

Mellllls and Becca, from these pictures I like the belted look better with cardigans too and less so over the fitted tops. In the mirror I felt like the look was smoother overall without cardigans on top, but when I looked at the pictures I thought the opposite.

I'm also tempted to try the belts over button-down blouses and will keep playing tomorrow. Thanks to all of you for the encouragement.

Kari, I think you make a good point comparing the belted look over cardigans vs. blouses. I really like the belt/cardigan look on you, and as a fellow hourglass, I have the same problem liking it on me over just tops or button-downs.

I also love that orange skinny belt; I was looking at the same one at Target yesterday. Instead I picked up a white patent, a red patent, and a cute blue multi-patterned skinny one. I haven't made the leap to the wider belts yet, just skinnies, but I like that look on you!

How funny that we were looking at the same one! I don't usually wear orange or zebra-print but thought these might liven up some of my solid outfits.

Kristen, I really liked the way you belted your cardigan over the AT Loft dress you posted recently. I'll keep trying, but I'll keep the tags on until I'm sure whether I like the look.

I pushed myself off the "belt cliff" by buying a couple of Target ones on super-clearance. At $2.98 a belt, I was willing to take a chance, you know? And it does look different without that lumpy clear plastic piece, trust me! Still, in fairness, it took trying it with a LOT of outfits -- and discarding the idea -- many times before I finally just kept it on. In no time, I've gotten used to the look and I like it a lot!

And thanks! I actually just posted a bunch of new photos with that dress and different combos -- and belts came into play in many of the outfits. I think I'm hooked!

Kari, I think it's a great look for you, I esp. love the zebra belt with black and blue. Please keep! The only combination I am not sure about is the blue top by itself with a belt - it looks like the fabric is thin and flowy, and maybe that's why it doesn't look quite right.

Hooray!

I'll try to wear this look out over cardigans to see if I can get comfortable with the look. I'm also wondering if the zebra belt would work as a substitute for the fabric belt in my denim trench coat. So many possibilities here.
