Fancy in Fair Isle - ETA pic - YouLookFab Forum

While shopping with my DD this past weekend, she found some polka dot pants she said she really likes. That goes on our list of things to buy, hopefully on sale. Meanwhile, I bought an ON fair isle sweater that was on clearance for under $17. It fits me perfectly, and I like the style; quality seems okay.

Imagine my surprise when I found this online:

This is the very same sweater I bought.

I have no intention of wearing an outfit exactly like that, but I did use the pic to give my DD ideas of how to style the pants once she gets them. She also wants a white button-down shirt. Obviously, more $ will be sunk into the shirt, as it will more than likely become a wardrobe staple for her. Moreover, I want her to have a shirt that feels good against the skin; not one of those cheap scratchy ones.

I also came up with an idea for myself, and I hope this will work. Since black and white is not my best color combo, and since it's now okay to mix black and blue, I thought of wearing a light blue button-down shirt underneath the sweater and wearing blue jeans instead of polka dot pants. Tall black boots, perhaps. Thoughts, anyone?

I like your idea and think that it will work well. You could also try a polkadot shirt, if you have one. It could be black with white fits like the pants or some other combination. A plaid or checked shirt Could also be fun.

I think a light blue shirt, such as a blue Oxford cloth, is a neutral. It goes with everything and flatters everyone.

Yes, do try that. Black tops are essentials for me but I often use jewelry, or a collar under to soften the black.

I think a plaid or checked shirt would look very modern under that great sweater, or a bright citron -- if those options aren't out of your comfort zone. I would absolutely wear that sweater with blue jeans and tall black boots. Love that idea. And I also love the light blue shirt idea as well.

Retailgirl, that's exactly what I was thinking--that light blue is a neutral.

Unfrumped, sounds like you and I are on the same track. I've often used jewelry to soften strong colors such as black. This time around, though, I want to do something different. In my circles, the combo I'm thinking of would be a departure from what others wear (plenty of women and girls wear jeans tucked into tall boots) while still allowing me to fit in, so to speak.

Viva, I don't have any plaid or checked shirts, and citron is a color that looks horrid on me, but I'm not opposed to trying a plaid shirt if I ever find a plaid pattern I like. I've been looking for one.

Today I wore the sweater over my new winter white RL button-down shirt (the lace doesn't show; just the collar), NYDJ Barbara boot cut corduroys (the "Eclipse" ones that turned out to be black), and low-heeled black ankle boots.

That sounds like a winning outfit. How did you feel in it?

Thanks, Joy. I feel really good in this outfit, and have already received 2 compliments this morning. That said, I think my idea of wearing the sweater with blue might be more fashion forward. I don't know. I just want to be a little more creative. I'm still waiting for the blue shirt to get here (I ordered it from J Jill).

Great sweater, and I like the sound of your outfits! It looks really nice on you with the white blouse. When you suggested blue, I thought of a chambray shirt, too, as a possible layer underneath, with your black/blue (eclipse) pants.
