evening bag

Is this as sweet as it sounds? From the description it sounds soft and dainty, without being too over the top with glitter or sparkle.

I need an evening bag for the wedding Michelle and I are going to. Though I don't know what I'll be wearing yet, I figure I can't go wrong with black velvet, satin, and sequins.

Robin, I don't really know your style yet, but this bag has a very boho look. Yes, it's velvet, but it's very slouchy and more casual looking than a dressy bag for a formal or semi-formal occasion. It has a retro, upcycled vibe, and I could see it adding a fun, pretty touch to jeans outfits.
I would look for a dress first, and then the accessories.

But, it sounds like this piece is definitely more on the informal, playful side, which wasn't quite what I was imagining, and probably isn't what I want for a wedding.

As far as getting the outfit first, I think I was trying to save time. Wedding is in two weeks, I travel in 10 days.

No, my wardrobe hasn't been a primary focus for me lately. :p

This question is probably the ultimate in fashion faux pas, but: What sort of an evening bag could one keep in one's wardrobe for emergencies. Nothing goes with all outfits, of course, but surely there are some standard pieces?

I think a black or metallic clutch is fairly classic and safe, I have a black sequinned clutch, sort of a scalloped shape, that has been used over 20 years!! I also have a cream and gold beaded clutch that has been useful.

If you wear black shoes a black one would be fine with most dresses, if you wear lighter colours I would head to gold or silver.

I own a small black bag that is suitable for all evening events. Like Kiwigal, I too have had my bag for about 20 years. I only use it for special events.

Some thoughts on my bag. It is black clutch. The fabric is shiny. It is small, yet I can fit pretty much anything I need into it. I've worn this same bag with everything from white silk to bright fuchsia. It has never let me down so you don't necessarily need a wardrobe of "event" bags. Just one really good one.

Clutch bags have become very popular and inexpensive, at least where I live, and although I don't use them all that often I have amassed a small collection of fun ones. The one I actually use most often is a metallic silver faux leather, very basic rectangle shape with a zipper on top, about the same size as an iPad. In fact it's rather like a fancy version of a pencil case! But I always feel a bit dressed up when I carry it simply because it is shiny and silver.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a bit of "fast fashion" for something like this, rather than torturing yourself trying to find the perfect bag that could last you for years. Depending on what you end up wearing you could get something wild and fun without feeling like you have to get "the one" bag you can have for the rest of your life.

I carry a gold mesh Whiting and Davis bag that belonged to my mother! And if she were still alive, she'd be 102. I have a similar one, in white mesh, that also was hers. Only two evening bags I've used my whole life!

If you are not sighted? Then something on a strap is essential, as putting a clutch down in wedding chaos might be worrisome for me.
I have two little evening bags that come on a long strap, one black leather and rectangular, and one white silk casual with a lot of pretty shells sewn on.
These go with a black-based formal wear capsule.
The velvet bag might be too casual for this event, but it is pretty. The textures look attractive.

I like the suggestions you've gotten here, Robin. Mander's picks would all work, although the second one is a bit more of a statement, being multi-colored, and the last one leans more daytime than dressy/evening.
My personal fave is the first one, a shiny silver beaded look with a little bit of slouch and a long silver chain strap.
