Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Even more bra questions! What fun!

I found my dream bra today. I don't know what the style is since I do not have it with me (I had to leave it there for alterations on the straps), but it is by Wacoal. There is no padding, no foam, good coverage, and good shape. I am delighted with it and will probably duplicate or even triplicate it with my birthday money. I think Wacoal and Chantelle continue to be "my" brands.

Now I have two more bra issues to tackle: I desperately need a sports bra. Trying to jump rope without one has proven to be a terrible and very uncomfortable idea. Any recommendations?

Second, I need a sleep/lounge bra. I'm starting to think maybe wearing my everyday bras 16 out of 24 hours a day is a bad idea and possibly why they wear out so fast. The challenge of course is my size. I find that a lot of these bras come in XS/S/M/L/XL instead of normal bra sizes. According to the sizing info, I'm supposed to be a small and a large at the same time (because my band size is small but my cup size is large). I have absolutely no idea what to get. Any input on this? What do you ladies where around the house and to sleep? I don't actually mind the idea of sleeping sans bra, which is what I do now. I don't find it uncomfortable at all. But when I'm just going about my business at home, I definitely need SOMETHING other than what I'm wearing now. I could possibly combine the sports and lounge bras but since sports bras have to work pretty hard as it is, I would rather not wear it out so much.

Thanks in advance Nicole/Hannah/Carissa, hehe.

I love Shock Absorber sports bras so much that I don't even consider any other brand at all. They have a range for every cup size, even the larger 32 cups, and activity level. I use mine for activities ranging from yoga, circuit training, cycling and running. In two words, they're awesome. They're a bit expensive but they are worth the investment.

They're available from Figleaves: http://www.figleaves.com/us/ns.....orber+bras

Check http://www.shockabsorber.co.uk to guage what support level you need and work from there.

Thank you Tass! I was looking at those but I'm hesitant to try anything without a recommendation. Sounds perfect. All my bras are expensive because it's just a fact of life when you're full-busted. The D+ bra I see is actually much cheaper than what I usually pay.

Maya - I started wearing this sleep/leisure bra a few months ago, and I love it. It is NOT for exercise - only for lounging and sleeping.

I don't know if it would work for you, because it starts at band size 34, but it might be very easy to have altered, since it closes in the front. I am a DDD (recently up from a DD, sigh) and I wear the 34CDE. It fits and feels fine. The white and ecru are the only colors you can get in 34 band. It costs $20.00

I ONLY wear it at home. It does NOT have support for going out. I mean - I wear it to go get my mail or get the paper from the end of the driveway, but I would NOT wear it out and about. It does not have any real support for wearing under clothes, but it is soooo comfy for wearing at home. Also - if I'm lounging around at home and a neighbor knocks on my door, or the UPS guy, or whatever, I feel fine wearing it, whereas I would never stand in front of a stranger without a bra under my clothes. Do you know what I mean?

I usually change into my "lounging" clothes after dinner, and I wear it to sleep as well. It has a front closure, which makes it super comfy to sleep in. I feel much more comfortable with a tiny bit of support at night, and I also feel better knowing that if there was some emergency during the night I could leap up and out of the house without being totally embarrassed. (Yes, this is full-on neurotic city, but this is how I think.)

Yes, I second the ShockAbsorber suggestion for sport bras, they are great! Note that they come in support levels. For high-impact sports I use the highest support level, and it works great. Well, I can't say there is no movement at all, but there is ALMOST no movement, which is a small miracle in itself.

For lounging, you may want to take a look at the loungewear in bravissimo: tanks with soft integral bra. I personally didn't try them, but it sounds like a nice idea.

I sleep sans bra, and I confess that for lounging I use my old stretched-out soft-cup bras :) I think a soft-cup bra can be nice, and if you don't own any, you can probably find them on sale in figleaves. For lounging I would buy a larger band size than what you buy for your everyday bras, since it doesn't have to be very supportive.

Oh, I just remembered: some girls in the thirty-twod community recommended using a really snug-fitting tank or sleeveless top as a lounging bra (under your lounging top, of course). I didn't try it (just imagining size H in a tank sans bra gives me shivers), but since you are much smaller, it might work for you.

Way to go Maya, that is great news.

Shock Absorber is a great brand. If Wacoal and Chantelle fit you well, the Donna Karan underwired sports bra is also a good solution.

My favorite sleep bra is made by my neighbor: http://www.sleeptop.com

Leisure bras are harder to find. You could wear an older sports bra that is still comfortable, just not supportive for bouncing. You could wear the sleep top. I prefer my leisure bras softcup - non underwired. You can find pictures and links on the BH blog: http://www.bratiquehelene.blogspot.com

Carissa - I just wanted to say you are a wonderful resource for those of us in the "over C" crowd!

A sleep/lounge bra? It never even occurred to me that such a thing might exist! Once again, I am learning something new from this forum.

I never wore a bra at home when I was a B, C, or even a D Laura. I just don't feel comfortable without one now that I have filled out, for all the reasons Tarzy mentioned.

When I'm lounging I don't wear a bra - if someone comes to the door, I just throw on a baggy sweatshirt. I would never feel comfortable sleeping in a bra either.

Maya, one thing I've learned about sports bras: it's very very important to only wear them while exercising, and remove them immediately once the activity is done. First of all there's the sweat issue - bacteria rapidly multiplies on sweaty exercise gear. But also the compression nature of a sports bra is not good for hours at a time. So change into it, exercise, then change back out of it as soon as possible.

Maya I also wear Shock Absorber bras (they run small). But I prefer to wear two bras to exercise. So I rotate my "older" bras to wear under the Shock Absorber Bras. If you do try this, make sure the athletic bra is smaller than your regular size. I don't recommend this for regular activity (like walking), but anything that involves bouncing is a lot more comfortable.

I don't wear leisure bras so I can't help you with that.

Shiny, trust me, nobody should see me in a baggy sweatshirt without a bra :) This is why lounging bras are very important.

Tarzy, I am intrigued by the sleep/leisure bra you posted. It looks good, however, I wonder whether all these hooks in front are comfortable ... I remember having a similar bra several years ago, and all these hooks managed to scratch my skin somehow - I am guessing because my front is much ... less flat (gross understatement!!) than my back, where the hooks normally are.

Nicole, shock absorber bras are especially designed to wick away perspiration. I imagine you don't have the same benefits if you are wearing them over another bra. Also, have you tried the one with a hole in the back (two hooks, a hole, and another two hooks)? It holds everything like you wouldn't believe.

HannahC - the lounge/sleep bra is very comfortable for me. The front hooks have a piece of fabric behind them so they do not touch your body. It would be very uncomfortable to sleep in a bra that had hooks in the back, so that's why this bra is great to sleep in. I'm sure there are other options out there (like Carissa's). I had a hard time finding any front-close bras. For the price, I'm very happy with this one.

I realize that a sleep bra isn't for everyone, but Maya specifically asked, and I wanted to pass along my good experience with this one.

I owned the leisure/sleep bra that Tarzy likes.

I liked it, but must have either worn it out or my breasts were too heavy for it after long usage. It too is a good option.

And thankyou Tarzy for the compliment.

Carissa, I saw this on your blog: http://www.sleepbra.com/

How do you order it? It doesn't seem to have any info on the page.
