Euro shoe sizes?

I read here that the size charts for comparing Euro shoe sizes with the US shoe sizes are wrong. Can someone explain why and how I should reinterprete the chart. Usually they say if you wear a US 8, then choose a Euro 38, is this wrong?

I don't know much about US sizes, but I wear 39, which is for feet 25 cm long. Looks like this is US 8, not 9.

I wear US 12, which is Euro 43 (although most websites like to tell me it's 42!)

So I do think that US 8 = Euro 39. What size are your Fidjis, San?

I always thought you just added a 30 to your US shoe size as well, San. However, I own a lot of Stella McCartney shoes, and I need to wear a 37 for my normally 6.5 sized feet. So I find that those just run a half size different. I'm not sure if that's specific to the manufacturer, or if the size discrepancy gets bigger as the shoe sizes get larger.

You're right, Steph - the gaps between sizes are bigger in Europe. The wikimedia link I posted contains the different size systems. I didn't know that US sizes for men and women are different

San, I always thought that technically a euro 38 was a US 7.5...that's my size. But I find it differs from brand to brand. Sometimes I'm a 37.5 if they come in half sizes too. I was on a shoe website the other night...Amano http://www.shopamano.com and i noticed that she gives a fit guide for each brand of shoe. So helpful.

The Fidji shoes size chart says that a US 8 is Euro 8.5. That sounds more sccurate.

My Fidjis And Eric Michael boots are a 37. However I have a pair of flats that Angie generously donated to me in a 37 which are too big. This is consistent with my US sizing experience--I prefer a more generous fit whenever possible, but certain styles of shoes like ballet flats won't stay on my feet if there is any wiggle room. I also have a pair of shoes in a 38 which run crazy small. In US sizes I can wear anything beywen a 6 and a 7.

I take a Euro 39/40 in Danskos and Birkenstocks and wear a US 8.5/9. So 38 for Size 8 sounds about right to me.

From my own experience, it depends a lot on the brand itself. In Euro brand I wear 38 or 38.5 or 39; and in American 7.5/8/8.5. On average, i would say 38.5=8.

I'm Euro 40/41 and US10 mostly.....depends on the shoe/brand as well. I guess that would make 39 a 9, and 38 an 8??

I've never heard the add 30 rule before, it seems a bit odd to me. I'm a 7 or 7.5 in North America, and almost always a 38 in Europe.

Very interesting indeed. We're all on the same page that an 8 is a 38, 38.5, or 39! Trying on is best.
Debbie I was looking at some shoes on Nordstroms website and I noticed that the charts are different for different brands, plus that added with Marianna saying that the charts don't work for her, is why I posted the question in the first place.
NEW SHOES FROM ITALY? CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THEM!

San, I wear a size 37 Euro and always think of them as a US size 6 3/4. They are bigger than 6 1/2 (usually) but not as big as a 7.

Oh that makes sense Laura. So my 38 is a 7 3/4. I'll remember that.
Sometimes the charts say for an 8 choose a 38.5, but that probably means that shoe runs small.

Actually I saw a chart once that indicated that Italian and French sizing is different. If memory serves, I think this was from the Totokaelo website. Personally I have bought from 35 to 37 and my US shoe size is 6 - 6.5. Given the lack of half sizes, I think 37 usually does me best unless it is a ballet flat or something that should be snug. For boots I have to use an insole sometimes to make them fit better. What brand are you looking at?
