Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Dress obsession

I'm not sure what's happening to me...I seem to have become obsessed with dresses! My wish list is filling up with them. Since there is no way I can get all of these, I thought I'd post a few links and get your opinion.

Current favorite: Phillip Lim dress with planets on it.

Ooh they're all so pretty. Some are clearly dressier than others.

I think you MUST get the planet dress, your name is written all over it. I still like ruffles and I'm really drawn to the ruffled mini dress... and it's a sweater dress, even better for fall/winter! I love it. I also really like the cashmere sweater dress. But they're all stunning, so I'm no help. :P

Some amazing dresses here. Angie will be excited. What kind of wear are you wanting to get out of your dress? Party, everyday, work, etc?

The seamed plaid and the bulls-eye are my fav for you although the seamed plaid is like the CE sheath that you already own.

DRESS WITH PLANETS ON IT? Someone give me $650 now! What a fabulous find! I guess I made my favorite very clear. The J Crew dress looks like it would look gorgeous on someone with a dainty waist.

I have been in a dress and skirt mood too lately, mostly because I want to expand my hosiery wardrobe.

(Alecia, I *am* excited. You are very cute).

Well Medusa, I’m obsessed with frocks too. LOVE THEM. I am so much more of a dress girl than a skirt girl even though I have both items equally represented in my wardrobe (I intend to change that!) I find dresses so easy and comfortable, and most importantly they showcase my boots and hose. Glad you’re having fun with dresses too!

Marianna....so, if I had $650 to spend on one item I would get the planet dress immediately. But it's really a holiday party dress...and I don't know that I would wear something so dressy very often. (Side note: why is it that the clothes that one wears infrequently are the most expensive? Fancy dresses, wedding dresses, and so on can be crazy costly.)

Alecia, good question. I posted partly because I don't know what I want, I just find myself adding dress after dress to my wish list. I should think it through some more.

Elpgal, good point about the seamed plaid dress. If I am going to go crazy with dresses, maybe I should look for variety.

Maya, maybe $650 will fall from the sky tomorrow and you can get the planets dress. :-)

Angie, I was thinking of doing a post about how to get more comfortable wearing dresses and skirts. Despite my growing dress obsession, I'm still more comfortable in pants...I realized this when I looked back over my outfit photos - I wear jeans/pants much more often. Is there any good way to get more comfortable with skirts/dresses besides just wearing them more often?

Medusa, they are all gorgeous! My favorites are the planet dress, the Nanette Lepore sweater dress ( tried it on and it is super cute) and the cashmere sweater J Crew dress.

I am a bit on the dress kick myself lately, must be Angie's influence :)

Wow, thank you for a great selection, Medusa! May the planet dress find its way into your wardrobe, it's very you.
I've been very interested in dresses as well, 100% because of Angie :)
I think wearing dresses more frequently would help. If it feels too dressy, you could throw in casual or androgynous elements (like tights and oxfords, or denim jacket). Or you could also wear them over jeans to get used to them.

I LOVE the planet dress Medusa! I think you could DEFINITELY wear that dress anytime you wanted, not just to a holiday party. Nothing about it is particularly "dressy" to me other than the fabric, but that could easily be played down or up depending on how you styled it. It looks rather short, so depending on where it hit you, it would look amazing with straight leg jeans and a black blazer with either a long necklace or a cuff bracelet. Or, you could switch the blazer for a motorcycle jacket, jeans, and a scarf. Or, in the spring, blue denim bottoms and a white denim jacket, or vice versa, or leggings, boots and a denim jacket. There are lots of possibilities. I made some polyvore sets so you could get an idea of what I am talking about (these are really quick and dirty, but hopefully you'll get the picture):

There are also other combos with tights and leggings and things you could do (and of course these sets kind of reflect my own personal style), these are just a few ideas.

Medusa snap i'm getting more dress obsessed too and they now outweigh trousers in my wardrobe. That's a great selection are you getting any of them? x

Oh Medusa, the planet dress is just killer. Ana is pure genius! I am glad others have also caught the dress-obsessed bug. Angie has influenced us all!

And speaking of which, Angie, the Kate Spade polka dot dress is calling your name. Yoo-hoo, Angie! :)

I think Alecia is right and you need to prioritise the areas in your wardrobe where a dress will fill a gap, do you need to increase your smart casual wardrobe or your evening wardrobe. You have linked to so many nice dresses and I have totally fallen for the J Crew dress with roses.

Ana, you are so sweet to whip up those ployvores. Fab frock for sure!

Medusa, Marianne offered excellent ways to get into the habit of wearing frocks more frequently. The fact that you moved from never wearing dresses to wearing at least a few dresses is brilliant. Well done! I generally have a hard time convincing clients that frocks rock too. I’ve found that leggings are another way of making the transition easy.

Laura, I tried on the Kate Spade dress. Unfortunately I could not fill it out :0(

Wow everyone, thanks for the comments! This is incredibly helpful. Well, maybe it's not so helpful that you're so in favor of the planet dress, because it is pricy....

Tanya, thanks for the comments. It's good to hear that you liked the NL dress in person.

Marianne, your suggestion is super helpful. I do feel more comfortable in a dress over jeans, so I should do that more. Making it more androgynous is also a great idea.

Ana, OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those polyvore sets are amazing. I totally get your argument that the dress could be worn lots of ways. Also, I'm glad you did the "quick and dirty" version because if you spent more time the results would have been so awesome they would have made my head explode. :-)

Louise, I'm undecided about getting them. I was half hoping you would all tell me some are really bad and not to spend the money.....so much for that theory.

Laura, I totally agree about both Ana being amazing and Angie's bad influence - I mean good influence. :)

Julie, good point. I'm looking over what I have and thinking about this over the weekend.

Angie, too bad about the Kate Spade dress. It does seem very you.

I absolutely love the plaid roll neck dress!!! (How I wish Nordstrom would ship internationally!) The only thing is the sleeves... Sleeves like that make it difficult to raise your arms (maybe it's just me but I go crazy if I can't move freely). I have removed sleeves like that on a dress though, and it turned out to be much more comfy to wear as a sleeveless. For a more casual option I like the last dress, it looks very comfy.
