Do these look too tight and/or short?

Sorry to spam you guys with questions tonight, I've had time off, and time to take pics.

Here's 2 semi-recent purchases you haven't seen, because I haven't worn them because I'm worried they are too short and/or tight.

#1 is the Esprit LBD that Maya and Kari have and rocked. It was on mega sale, so I thought I'd take a risk and buy it. The neckline and slight a-line shape really appealed to me.

I think I should have sized up though, it just feels a smidge too form-fitting for my liking, I am used to looser clothing. It doesn't grab anywhere, but it is rather fitted from the bust down. And the hem could come down by about an inch...should I lengthen it??

#2 I am pretty dissapointed about as I didn't think I was taking a risk. Its from Express and very similar to a zebra pattern dress I bought instore there last year. The same size in this polka dot dress is way tighter. The fabric waisty bit is *very* form fitting. What do you think, obscene? Again this dress could be lengthened by about an inch too. I do love the polka dots and the pockets. It fits really well through the bust too.

Thus the perils of intercontinental shopping. It's not always a happy story.

Should I donate/resell these or persist with them do you think?

p.p.s. hope you're not getting too bored of this little corner in my new flat. Only area with enough space and good enough light for taking pics I've found. Please admire the lemon my brother painted

Tam, I actually DO admire the lemon on the wall.

As for the dresses, I think the first one is totally ok, it doesn't seem too snug to me nor too short (though I personally wouldn't feel comfortable in such a short skirt). I think you can wear it as it is!

The second one I'm not so sure about. Not that it looks obscene, but not flattering either. While the zebra dress gives you curves in all the right places, this one doesn't do anything for you. I would try to resell it and wear the zebra dress more often instead.

Love the first dress! You should totally be rockin' that with a pair of Sofft Rachelles!

The second dress? It's kind of...eh. It's not as flattering as the zebra pattern you already own.

Have you had success with reselling?

I agree with the others, I like the first but the second is just OK for me after seeing the zebra version. I think the length of these looks great on you!

Guys thanks for you candour. I think what you say about the second dress makes perfect sense - I'll stick with the zebra version (duh!!) There's always room for another dress then next summer.

So you don't think I should get the hem of the first black one taken down?

I like both of them. The zebra looks great on you too, but I actually prefer the polka dot dress. It's just more classic. Have you tried layering it over a shirt (button down or tight t-shirt maybe)? Or if not over, how about under a cardigan or button down?

The LBD doesn't look tight, but I would let the hem down a bit. Is there anything in the waist to let out in that second dress? It seems like the waist is the only tight part.

Oooh the zebra dress is amazing on you! The other dress doesn't seem to fit the same way, but it still looks good to me. The hem definitely needs to be let down but it's not obscene at all. It looks like it fits quite well.

I like the Esprit dress too, but I am biased...

That is a well handled lemon. I am impressed!

Hi! I'm new but I thought I'd comment on your first question:

I think the LBD is very flattering. It doesn't look too tight to me. The length is something I'd feel comfortable with if I wore flats, but probably a little uncomfortable with heels. If you will be mostly *standing* when wearing it, then it should be okay. If you plan on wearing it while sitting where your legs can be seen, ie. in a church pew or at the theatre, then you might want to let down the hem so it doesn't have as much leg showing when it rides up. (The other option would be to wear it with opaque leggings)

I like both dresses, actually! The first one is extra Fab, if you could let the hem down that would be great, but they don't look terribly short.

And I am a lover of "art" and I love the lemons!

I was going to ask about that lemon painting. I love it. Your brother is a GREAT artist. I love lemons to eat and to look at.

I like the first dress. I see no problem with the length but if you prefer it longer I think it would still be great. I don't like how the second dress fits you. I'm not sure why though. Sorry to be little help.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Bit of a mixed opinion on the dresses, which mirrors how I feel too hehe.

So I think I'll keep #1, and get the hem let down.

#2 I'm still on the fence about. I love everything except the tight waist. There are no darts or seams that I can see that can be let out, and no extra fabric to play with. I'd love to think that my newly adopted swimming, and soon-to-be adopted yoga will remove enough inches to make this dress comfy. However being a true apple, I'm worried this is wishful thinking! Maybe I should hang onto it for one or two more months and see? Of course by then it will be winter anyway and no use till next summer. Hmmm! I'm still undecided but thanks for putting up with my indecisivesness anyway!!!

p.s. glad you like the lemon. I have 3 other paintings of his too. I'm waiting on a 4th of the beach at the gong he had promised to do for me to make me less homesick

LBD is great. I LOVE the polka dot one with ruffles it gives you a fantastic waist, the ruffles add more volume to the top makeing your waist look really defined KEEP, i'd perhaps have the hem let down a tad or wear it with leggings though the length is good as it is x

I think that both of these dresses are beautiful on you, but you should only keep the ones you love. The black dress is especially flattering. They are totally length and fit appropriate.

Ok jury is still out on the dot dress. Haha I think I might keep it for a few more months. If it fits then I will get the hem take down. If not then I'll give it away!!!

The sheath dress standing up is fine, but my guess is that when you sit down it will be shorter than you'll feel comfortable with. There's nothing worse than finding yourself in doing The Downward Hitch every time you take a seat.

And I do prefer the zebra dress to the polka dot version. Don't you hate when the same size from the same store doesn't fit the same way twice? Maddening.

April you've hit the nail on the head on both counts! I'm going to get #1 taken down for that very reason.

Yes I can't believe the same size fits so differently....grrrr!!!
