Denim shirt dress? And another summer skirt.

What do you think about this denim shirt dress? The style seems like a great cross between retro feminine and tomboy to me. My only concerns are that the neckline would be too deep to wear it without layers and that the denim might be too warm in the heat. What do you think? Do you like it?

There is also a swishy cotton midi skirt available which I really like. Both in a pattern and a light blue. Any thoughts on these?

The denim shirt dress is a great shape. It is a slightly lower neckline, but not too low. Depends on what you have going on up top. You could try tucking a small silk scarf in the neckline if you think it is too revealing. It wouldn't be as heavy as wearing a cami underneath it. I can't tell from the picture how heavy the denim is. If it is summer weight denim you should be okay. The skirts are really nice and I love the directional pockets on the striped one. And you can't go wrong with pale blue chambray skirt in the summer!

Thanks Anna! I have a small bust so I often don't manage to fill things out on top. Which means gaping necklines can be a problem because you then see my bra with movement. So my worry is less about it being too sexy, more about the gaping... They do call it midweight denim, whatever that means. Oh and I can only afford to buy one of these, so I would need to pick.

I really like those cotton skirts, especially the striped. The dress is great, too, but I think you have to try it on to know if it would work. Fab finds!

I like them all! I slightly prefer the striped midi over the solid, but the solid might go with more things.

Thanks Marble! Yes, I guess I can't be sure about the dress until I try it. The skirts are much more forgiving. But I can try to ask for measurements, it's a small brand.

Thanks Smittie - agree that the solid skirt is the better neutral, but I'm drawn to the stripes too.

Alasse, colorwise they should both work well in my wardrobe. I don't own many summer tops right now, but they are all solids. I do have a new patterned summer skirt though, so maybe a solid would be the better choice. That way I would have an an option for patterned tops, which I definitely want to look for going forward.

My favorite of these is the striped skirt. I can see it being very versatile too, dressing up or down.

I am not wild about the gathering at the waist on the dress and would like it a lot better without the gathers. I like the top part though and think the neckline looks fine.

Thanks Diana. You're right, the gathering might be tricky. I had skirts where gathers like this worked really well, and ones where it looked off and made me look twice as big. I wrote a mail to ask about measurements.

I love the dress in theory but like Diana, wonder about the gathered waist. Denim can be a bit bulky so it might be an issue.

I love the striped skirt, but does it also have gathers? Might be worth determining. I can't really tell from the photos.

Thanks Suz - looks like the skirt has gathers as well. But I don't mind those in a thin fabric like cotton. In fact I find them more flattering than big pleats with a high waist like this. The denim might be too bulky, you're right...

I could also invest the money in a new BF cardigan as summer alternative to my dark grey wool cardigan.

I can totally see you in any of those, Astrid. It may be more trouble than it's worth and tricky to match, but I wonder about adding another button at the top of the dress if needed.

I decided against the skirts because I just got a great new summer midi skirt that I really like and want to wear (it's hemmed btw and looks great). I also need a new BF cardigan, but I think I want it to be more of a neutral color like my dark grey one. I recently said I wanted to try to find more dresses, so I'm going to order this one. I think it's worth a try.

I think it has great potential. I'm not concerned about the low neckline or gathered waist because I think you can pull it off. It's an ADORABLE dress.

Aw thanks Angie. I have to say I would enjoy having a denim dress again, we had one (three versions in different sizes) in the family, all sewn by my grandma. It was my favourite dress and when I outgrew one there was a bigger one waiting, at least for a few years. It was a similar silhouette with buttons, plain v-neck, full skirt but with a less defined waist. My sister loved them too.

I like the dress for you better than the skirts, which look to have too much volume. I, too, am small busted so dresses with low or V necklines or faux/real wrap dresses can gape. I have a couple of mid-weight/light weight denim dresses and I love wearing them as they can be dressed up or down with jackets, scarves, etc. I personally would always wear a T-shirt under or something over this to accommodate the sleeveless because I don't like my upper arm flab and I'm always too cold. Wearing a dress like this over a shirt makes it what we in the States call a jumper.

If you opt for one of the skirts, I would favor the stripes. I think the plain one is kind of dowdy. Good luck.

Thanks Nebraskim! I ordered the dress and passed on the rest. I might experiment with layers, but I would definitely prefer the dress to work just as it is, with sandals added. It doesn't bother me that it's sleeveless, when it's warm I just don't care about my arms. As long as the neckline works...

If the neckline is a bit too low you could try those things that they sell on TV that snap onto your bra and fill in that little space at the bottom of the neckline. They sound really silly but they actually work. I have a couple le and I don't use them often but in just the right situation and the right color they are perfect.

Glad you ordered the dress, and I hope it works for you. Not to be a spanner, but the skirts remind me of what my mom used to wear -- and not it a good way. All those gathers at the waist and the pockets would seemingly add a good ten to fifteen pounds (4.5 to 6.8 kilos) to her body.

I love the dress and am so glad you ordered it. Even if it does not work, it will give you a good idea of how this style works for you and what needs to be different for the style to really work. It looks like potential workhorse and super stylish option for easy summer dressing. The gaping can be easily resolved with sewing on one small popper or an alteration.

ETA: My only concern is in terms of proportions - as sister pear who prefers conventional figure-flattery, I stay away from V-necklines especially paired with sleeveless options. Those two in combination make me lose my shoulders completely and when worn with wider skirts can create very unflattering bottom-heavy effect on me. This dress has the collar and lapels which help balance things out better in that sense, but I think we'll know best once we see it on you.

Yes, I totally get what you mean. I think it depends a bit on how much we're going to see of this effect. I don't mind looking a bit bottom heavy, I am after all. But it shouldn't be too much either. We'll see.
