Denim dress decisions.... - YouLookFab Forum

So, I tried on this Anthropologie denim dress at our DC shopping meetup on Sunday, but just couldn't decide whether to buy it. I loved the swingy soft fabrication and the high-low hemline. It even felt good belted (which is HUGE for me since I am seriously belt-phobic). I currently own a denim dress, but I've never been completely happy with it since it's a lighter color than I prefer and it's a little stiff and straight. The Anthro dress is very hip by comparison. I couldn't stop thinking about it on the drive home Sunday, and ordered it immediately after I got home. It arrived today and here is my attempt at styling it....along with my original denim dress for comparison. I love the easy vibe of the new one, but does it justify owning two denim dresses? (This is also a good time for everyone to weigh in on the dress I currently own since I haven't been feeling the love for it lately and was considering consigning it. Hmm....)

I also like Anthro one. Not sure why it may be the less stiff fabrication.

I think they both look great and I really like them styled as a long "duster". Very cute look! If you don't feel the love for your current dress then maybe consign that one? I think they are both very attractive.

I prefer the Anthro dress too, Nancy. And I saw and felt it in person and know that it fits you great and the fabric is so soft and nice. Your existing dress looks nice with the brown belt but i am not feeling it in any of the other combos (it looks a little too long and stiff), whereas I think the Anthro dress looks good in all the ways you've styled it, so it seems like it would be a lot more versatile.

The "old" denim dress fits you perfectly. I actually prefer it to the new one, although both are nice. The new one looks nice, too, so it's really a matter of which one you feel more fab in!

The old denim dress reads very neutral on you, at least on my screen, so needs something or multiple somethings to bring life to your outfit. The new denim dress does not read neutral on you so has more life. Does that make sense?

Love the Anthro dress, so glad you got it! The material is fabulous and I love all the ways you have styled it. The old one is pretty, but I much prefer the new one.

Whew glad I'm not the only one who prefers the old dress. I think if you maybe got the waist taken in a bit so the shape is more defined you'd be set with that one.

Hmm. Thanks, everyone. Lots of different opinions here. Nobody hates either dress, though, so the possibility remains to keep them both for different moods/purposes.

I'm glad some of you (including Angie) feel the love for the dress I already own. I must like it more than I realize because it's survived several closet purges over the past year!

I think I like the Anthro dress for its soft arty vibe, which is the direction my style seems to be headed toward lately. I also think it didn't photograph very well....it looks better IRL. Maybe I'll keep them both, but I'm still thinking.

I also like the old dress, particularly when it is worn just as dress. I think they are different enough that both might have a place in your closet.

I like your old dress better than I thought I would from your description, but I totally understand the importance of how it feels! That Antho dress feels wonderful on. The new one does have an ease I think the old one lacks -- they do have different vibes. I really like the new one on you -- wish it worked for me too, but it was just too short on me! That's ok, we're still vest twins.

Keep both! I like the new one better because of the high low hem, and the darker wash. I find that darker wash very flattering on blondes. I also like the shorter hem line at the front of the new one. Having said that the one you own also looks great. I see no issue having two. They are different enough in my books

I think the new one might be more versatile in that it has a belt, looks good with other belts and even without a belt! Maybe it is time to pass on the original? ( although had I not seen the new I would have given it the thumbs-up to keep.)

Sorry to be a mare, I love your oldie much better, but you know, if need one more of a kind...the new seems more casual, rather a long high low shirt than a dress...and a bit hobo.- the other seems much more polished in a casual way I mean.

i actually like the old dress better, though both are great on you. it looks more streamlined and put together, while the new one gives a far more relaxed vibe, like maybe super great lounge and (M)OTG wear?

The old one is crisper and more structured. I think I prefer that, but i can see that it might feel "old" (not that you said that, and not that you look it!) There's a bit of a prep vibe to it that maybe doesn't suit your new style direction. I actually prefer it (length, cut) but it really depends how you're going to wear it.

Now that I see both I like your original as a dress (belted as in 7) and the Anthro one as a tunic (3-6). Not sure it justifies having both.

I think neither are perfect, so I vote return the Anthro dress and keep the old one for the time being. I think the Anthro dress is too short - you have great legs - but those shirt-tail hems look odd to me if they're much above the knee.

I also feel the Anthro dress is a bit short and odd on the hemline - the old denim dress has a very nice line and length. Shape/fit the old denim dress is really nice looking. Maybe keep looking for a lighter weight version or try washing it with vinegar or some other additive to soften the fabric?

I really like the Anthro dress as a tunic - not so much on its own, as a dress.

I can see what you mean about the color of the old dress. The old dress *is* a little sharper, in that it's got more structure/seams/etc, but I'd prefer the Anthro dress, personally for the color... so back and forth, back and forth... total justification for two denim dresses!

Haven't read any of the above opinions, but I slightly prefer the old dress due to its structure, but the new one has a great color and looks more casual and fun. So maybe you could use both of them? Why not?

I actually prefer the length and structure of your current dress. It looks absolutely amazing in both of the belted looks. I prefer the Anthro one for the looser, more tunic-y looks, though.
