Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Current Silhouette for Trousers

All of the recent discussion about the changing silhouette for casual pants--toward a narrower shape--has got me wondering about the silhouette for trousers. I am thinking the kind of basic trousers that are suitable for a non-casual work environment or a business meeting. Are wide-leg and trouser cuts still au courant, or has the shape changed there too?

I woke up one morning last week and realized that I am the only woman left in North America who doesn't own a pair of skinny-leg jeans--I wonder what else I might be missing! :-)

No skinny jeans for me either...nor leggings! So you aren't alone.

And I am seriously hoping the gals don't say that wide leg trousers are OUT, because I have several pairs that have lots of wear left in them : )

My work wardrobe is definitely more classic than the rest of my wardrobe, on the whole I wear tailored wide leg or boot cuts for work. Being professional is more important than being current in the office.

I have skinnies and bootcut jeans and I have wide leg trousers (not too wide because I'm petite) and straight leg trouser.
I don't think wide leg trousers are out.. They are a classic. You must choose what suits you body type.

You're not the only one, I don't have skinny jeans either - but that's only because I don't have the right shape for it yet. I'm working on that though and as soon as I lose another 20lbs it will be nothing but skinnies from that point on. Hope they don't go out of style by that time.

I have started narrowing (via a tailor)my dress trouser pant legs. I'm surprised how more put-together I feel. I didn't realize that the wide leg of the hem opening was contributing to a sloppy feeling on my part.

I began with an older pair of trousers that don't get much wear. I really like the result.

I have skinny, boot cut and wide leg jeans and boot cut and wide leg trousers. I think a lot of it comes down to what suits you and feel comfortable in x

I like the shape of skinny jeans, but I do not like dress pants to be that straight. Of course, I've learned to never say never, but it seems there is a higher chance of dress pants that narrow in towards the ankles winding up looking weird... I think it is because jeans are meant to be form-fitting all over, including the hips, whereas dress pants are meant to be more drapey. So there's higher risk of having that "lollipop" effect.

With that said, I do prefer my dress pants to be cut closer to the body in the thigh area. That seems to be flattering for my shape, being petite with narrow hips, I can easily get swallowed up in wider legged dress slacks. For example, BR Martin's come in two different cuts. Both are bootcuts, but one is cut wider in the thigh, the other is slimmer. The wider ones look frumpy on me. I just don't fill them out properly.

The silhouete of pants seems to be all over the place right now. I notice the pleats in the fronts are showing up on store websites, only now the leg line is narrow at the ankle and I've seen them ending at the ankle. They are cute for younger gals who like to dress more dramatically.
Like Shiny said above, dress fabric looks nice when it has some drape to it. I have seen men's dress pants going back to the drainpipe look though, and I always like that look on a guy, like the Beattles in the 60's.

I've been wondering about this too. All my dress pants have been purchased at least 6 years ago, and they are a little wider in the leg than the silhouette I see around. I have very few occasions to wear them, so I wouldn't want to get a new pair, and I hope they still work. Perhaps I should post a picture. :)

All silhouettes for slacks and dress pants are fabulous, garmenta. Whatever tickles your fancy. I personally like boot cuts for macro check and pinstripe slacks and cigarette styles for black. I don't do wide legs.

These are my latest trouser purchase. Just wondering if these is a wide leg? ( this was before I hemmed them)

Thanks for your comments! Sounds like "trouser" cut pants are still fine and will be for a while. Wide legs in a trouser are a matter of taste, not of fashion, and since I look good in mine and wear them with panache, I'll stick with them for the time being.

Now, about those skinnier jeans...I think I'll ease into it...try some straight legs first...
