Cropped Trousers and Tall Booties in the Royal World

Royal Outfit of the Day

Queen Letizia of Spain is known for her business-like attire and experimenting with trends. Today (or yesterday by now) she tried out cropped pants and high-shaft booties. The verdict on Royal Order of Splendor is mostly a NOPE... but many of the commenters do have trouble with the more trendy trends.

The right length of crop is challenge for a lot of us on YLF, I know, so maybe it would be fun to discuss here!

In my opinion, the trousers are clearly way too short, approaching capri land. They need at least another couple inches. As is, even with these close-fitting sock booties, they're catching on the tops (pic #2).

What do you think of the rest of the outfit?

Huh, I looked at the pictures before reading your post and actually thought she was pulling it off perfectly. I could see how adding maybe an extra inch of length could work, but I guess I just prefer this look with a more dramatic crop. I don't think this is an issue of a royal struggling with a trend, I think this is a trend that may never see widespread appreciation. As you suggest, many royals fans might prefer the more classic silhouettes.

It would be a very nice outfit if the boot/pant length weren't messing with my eyes. It just seems elegant and soothing until you get to the bottom

They seem a tad short, unless she's going for capris, but the way the pants fall make it seem like they're trousers. Oh, to have the challenge of cropped pants looking too short.

I guess my eye has adjusted to the look of cropped pants (at varying lengths) because I think she looks stunning. An inch or two longer might be optimal but, since the pants and the boots are of similar shade and depth of color, I still think the combo works. But she is so beautiful that she could wear a burlap bag and pull it off.

So I think the key for me is that the pants are visibly hanging on the top of the booties. I haven't heard Angie say one way or another, though, so maybe that's just me! And of course denim is less likely to do that than suiting material.

I like the length of the culottes. I think the boot shafts need to be taller.

I love that website. She's one of the few who wears pants. Most of them wear dresses with huge heels except for QE2, of course.

I noticed that her pants are caught on her boot in pic #2 as well, so I guess the lengths are too similar. The pants could be longer or the boots higher to fix the problem. Other than that, I think she looks lovely and I like the cropped pants and boots.

I have this catching problem sometimes with the tops of the booties, bottoms of the crops...it is tricky to get it just right.

I would love it if Angie weighs in. She is the expert on pants lengths.

There is something that makes these feel somewhere between crops and culottes and that is perhaps the difficulty. But like Diana, I think if her boots were taller it would not be an issue. Or if the trousers were wider on the bottom they would not catch.

I actually like it, and I'm not the biggest cropped pants convert at all. Yeah, the pants might be a little short, but overall I think the look is really nice. To me, the long coat makes the look -- I really only do the cropped pants look when I incorporate a long jacket. Somehow that makes the difficult proportions work on me, since I'm not so slim.

What Diana said. I like the pants length.

The catching would bother me as a wearer in a sensory way; my not-quite-knee high boots are happily getting a lot of wear with crops, because I like the way zero-gap-ever, zero-catch feels. Her look is probably edgier, mine probably skews retro. I like retro, so all good.

Most of the comments on that site seem to be from people who don't get much IRL exposure to these looks. Hadn't seen the site before; thanks for the introduction!

I think it's quite nice. It seems like culotte length but maybe not quite wide enough to be culottes? I don't know but I think it's a pretty good look.

The only change I would make is in the width of the pant leg. A little bit wider and the hem should not get eaten by the boot's shaft, plus give a nice soft fluidity when she walks. I love the length of the crops as is, with this bootie.

Such an elegant woman, and obviously loves fashion!

I think she looks great! I usually don't like cropped pants, but I think she carried it off very well.

I think she looks amazing. Classic with an edgy twist. I adore her boots. I am not that particular about pant length unless they are really out of proportion to the outfit. Hers look fine. I love the coat with the whole outfit.

Culottes could have a been an inch shorter or longer to prevent "the hem catch" - otherwise, a Killer gorgeous look.

What a very elegant and sophisticated look. The only thing that bothers me is the hem catching on the edge of the boots, so either an inch longer culottes or an inch taller booties would been perfect.
