Covering Up Scars

I have really bad acne on my neck and back, much which has had to be surgically delt with, and have a lot of deep scarring from it. Over winter I've been wearing collars under round necks at school (like pictures).

Unfortunately Spring just started on Monday here, it's heating up, and I don't know what I could wear to cover up without boiling alive or looking very unfashionable! Any ideas?

If this is scarring you're going to have for the rest of your life, I'd encourage you to experiment with revealing it. You'll be surprised, I think, by how little anyone but you minds it.

That being said, when you really want/need to cover it, what about something like a mock neck tank? Breezy, relaxed fit ones should still feel pretty cool, despite the higher neck and back.

You're smart to cover up -- the sun can darken the scars, so be careful out there!

I would talk with a dematologist to see what to do to minimize any darkening, or whether that's an issue. Sometimes I believe they recommend limiting sun exposure for a certain amount of time after surgery.

I agree with Jenn. When your doctor gives you the go-ahead, I'd encourage you to see if you can get comfortable with the idea of having your neck uncovered. It's not worth it to go through life year after year after year limiting your choices to hide something that just is what it is.

I suspect the scarring will fade but I know how hard these things are at the time. Especially at school. And advice from the dermatologist about sun exposure is a really good idea.

Loose cotton or chambray shirts with a collar come up pretty high at the back... Heaps of styles available depending how you like to dress and great with shorts or even over a dress. Or a loose shirt dress?

Do you have long hair, maybe even wearing that loose at the back will cover it?

Lots of people at work have the cutest sheer tops that they wear over tees. If the sheer fabric has a print, you don't see through it very much. I love all the other suggestions too.

Collared shirts made out of cotton voile?

That's a challenging issue especially when you're young. Jenn's advice is excellent. Of course you should get an okay from a doctor but I think she's absolutely right. Most people are much more preoccupied with how they look than how you look. All you need is a few people to be extra supportive. When I met my husband and was trying to look so attractive all the time I was still having regular outbreaks of cystic acne that were mortifying to me. Did not bother him one bit.

You've gotten good advice here regarding clothing, sun exposure and comfortability factor with it. I had a total thyroidectemy which left a very long scar. When I got the go ahead to "let it see the light" I was very bashful about it. Do you wear scarves? Very light breezy scarves would be a good way to go. I wish you the best. And it will get better!

I also had thyroid surgey - very recently- and have J- shaped scar from base of neck up to right ear. To protect from sun I wear a loosely draped light cotton scarf. I am a scarf lover so am looking forawrd to cooler weather and opportunity to play with my scarves.

Anyway, scarves can be styled in so many ways - easy to find tutorials on youtube.

And as others have noted, if you don't have to protect your skin from the sun, try going uncovered, if you are comfortable. A lttle bit at a time!

You've got some great advice and i'm with kiwi gal on this one - i think collared shirts and dresses look fab and will give you the desired coverage at the back and chest area....also adding a lightweight scarf could do the trick with everyday tee's and blouses (they also make for a good accessory!)

I would highly highly recommend you check out tie neck blouses and tops, they are a personal favourite of mine and look beautiful

I've suffered from aggressive cystic acne for the last one year and know how damaging scars can be for confidence, but i'll also say be brave and embrace it... I've reached a point where i go out without covering my acne scars with makeup and it doesn't bother me anymore.
