I have a confession to make: yesterday I went to check out two consignment stores for party wear for my upcoming ballroom dance Gala. I have not found any decent party stuff there but somehow I ended up with a couple of items I was not looking for.
pic 1-3 Wide leg baggy 100% wool camel trousers new with tags (from a local boutique). Only on Friday I was mulling over Angie's formula an thinking that I would love to have a pair of toffee pants to play with - and this is what I find the next day. The fabric quality is very nice!
I also was gathering these outfits with baggy wide trousers without a hope that I can ever find those:

How could I have left them in the store? I could not. I think I need to let out the hem a bit but need to decide first on the heel height. In the worst case if I cannot make them work as long trousers then I will make them into another pair of culottes!
Now tell me I am crazy because very possible I am...

For some reason I fell for this jacket even though it was black and I already have a black tux jacket. Look at the length - isn't it perfect? I also loved the sharp shoulder line, the faux leather sleeves, the low stance and narrow lapels - all this looked pretty current to me. My only hesitation was the double breasted style but in the end I decided to risk it. There was also black long jacket by Robert Rodriguez with an awesome patterned silk lining and cool design details...but it just did not fit me right at all: looked like a sack on me without fashionable fluidity. In comparison this BCBG jacket fits like a dream!

What do you think - score or "what she was thinking"?

Oh boy, I can relate to your story. I love the jacket - I just wore a somewhat similar thrifted jacket yesterday, but it works so much better if you have some height! I love the idea of the camel trousers but am not sure of the cut, it seems a bit wide on the outside if that makes sense, nothing your mother could not tweak though. Can't wait to see you style them - I love your pins!

Love the trousers. You should be able to get a lot of use from these. Not so sure about the jacket. I do have a poison eye for the double breast, though.

Score! I especially love the jacket on you, but the trousers are wonderfully slouchy and a great toffee color. I have also come home with things from consignment I had no plans to get but they often become favorites and are better quality than most of my new pieces.

At first I thought the pants look big on you, but I can see that they fit in the waist and upper hip, and they look like your pinned photos! I think they look fashion-forward and just what you were going for.

Two great finds, Sveta! The pants work well with your height. I see your slight hesitation with the double breasted buttons, but the rest of it is so FAB, it hardly seems to matter.

I like the trousers too, what a score. I am not sure whether just a small decrease in the amount of fabric in the legs would work or not, they are perfect from the side view. I love them with the shirt, very Katherine Hepburn!

Camel trousers looking good from front, but the side view is not perfect to my eyes, if you are looking for perfection(?). They kind of make a baggy drape from the side seam towards the rear, and that bothers me somehow.What is their condition? Perhaps they only have to be ironed, or taken in a bit in the upper tights? Dunno, but it's not the most pristine look I know you are usually after. Sorry to be a mare:-(..

Love the pants! Very Katherine Hepburn. I like them all slouchy but that is my taste. The jacket looks very nice on you but I am not a fan of double breasted jackets for indoor wear. I find I have fewer options with them.

I seriously love those pants. If you decide to return, I will buy them from you. I like the length of the jacket but am not sure about the double breasted look. I defer to other more fashionista thinkers on that.

Wow. Both pieces are just stunning! The trousers look like superb quality and I love the length of that blazer on you. I see what you mean about it's double-breasted-ness but I think it looks great closed. That sharp shoulder line is super modern and fab. SCORE! (That means you are not crazy IMO.)

Thrifting is best for situations like these -- when you're wanting to try something new without a hug investment. Love the sharp shoulders and flowing pant legs!

Fantastic consignment finds! I was just commenting to a friend this a.m. that I'm confused about current trouser fits. These are indeed slouchy on you, but slouchy fit is clearly one of several trouser fits that is currently in vogue. Agreed that the camel color is marvelous, and I love them with the white blouse.

Awesome blazer, too. With its elegant long length, low lapel, and faux leather sleeves, I think it has a current look in spite of its double-breastedness (hmmm..just made up that word!)

Whew - thanks goodness I was not crazy after all!
The pants really fit well - they are not too snug and not too big, I had a luxury of selecting from 2 sizes and the bigger size was clearly too big.
I was not sure if the front pleats look good on me but because nobody commented on them I think it must be ok
Another problem with these pants is hat they look their best in motion and not in a static picture. Now they only concern I have is weather - as we got our first snow on the ground today I wonder how much I would really wear those trousers before the spring.

BTW I found the link for the trousers here - I have never heard of this brand Malene Birger...

As for the jacket: not that I have a poison eye for double breasted style but I just never had this style and it was a new thing for me. I guess it will be my wildcard.
Actually I found Angie's post from last year on current toppers and look what it says:

Blazer: A clean-cut modern classic that is updated every few years. Trendy blazers have a low stance with one or two buttons, and a narrow revere collar. Or they are double-breasted with a low stance. They are “multi media” and might have leather, lace, or colour blocked insets.

So I was not off the mark after all!

Suz, I HAVE to play by "one in - one out" rule but it is very hard now. If I don't I won't be able to keep my wardrobe in check. Coats and special occasion wear excluded

The slacks are amazingly gorgeous on you. I can't say the same for the jacket. It might be how the black photographed, but it looked like it was a size too small. I thought it looked rather dated too.

I think both of these are great for your classic, dramatic style--you can pull them off.
At first I thought the pants might be too big, but I see that is just their style--and I know what you mean about motion. I also have some pleated pants and the still photos don't look so hot, but I think the pants work IRL.
I think this is the perfect double breasted jacket. With the low stance, it looks good open or closed--sort of less double-breasted, if that makes sense. It's long but not exaggerated, and better for you than short boxy styles, I think--gives the lean long classic look.

Now, what are you going to toss? Those are some of my favorite posts of yours, to see how you decide what replaces what. I need more lessons.

unfrumped, this IS the question - and I don't have the answer yet. I have to be ruthless and do follow this rule to keep my closet in a manageable state.
I have already purged all badly fitting / past their prime items and now it is more about which items I tend not to reach for...
I am also going to cheat a bit and move several items to "special occasion" capsule which I don't count for - now when I have more occasions like this with dancing I really can justify having a separate capsule.:-)
