Closet cleanout part 3: Dresses, skirts
I'm continuing my long-overdue closet cleanout and am focusing on dresses and skirts, most of which have been in my closet for 3-6 years. There are really some doozies here but also some things that I think are worth keeping. (Interestingly, nearly all of these were bought on clearance... that tells you a lot about my former shopping habits & instincts that I've been trying to change.) I'd love to hear your recommendations as motivation to clear some space in my tiny closet! Apologies that this is so long.
First, disclaimers: I am just trying these on for fit, so I am not wearing shoes and the top I'm pairing with skirts is a basic layering cami. I just didn't have time to create an outfit around every piece today. Any pictures with a complete outfit are from archives on my computer.
You can see the whole album here with the password "youlookfab": http://s645.photobucket.com/al.....0cleanout/
The dresses -
1. Hot pink sheath dress: Ann Taylor Loft. I posted this a while ago and Nicole gently mentioned that the fit in the bust wasn't the best (too small.) It also is very big in the center back. My instinct is to GIVE AWAY. http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_422b.jpg
2. Forest green dress from Target. I'm leaning towards keep. http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_424b.jpg
(Work With What You've Got posted a more true-to-color pic of her in the dress here: http://workwithwhatyouvegot.bl.....ress.html)
3. Patterned dress from Kohl's with faux belt. It actually fits better in the bust in real life - this is an older picture when I was at a heavier weight. I think I'm going to keep this. http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....re066b.jpg
4. Denim jumper from Forever 21 - keep. http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....re334b.jpg
5. Brown dress from Anthropologie. This is probably the most boho thing I own. I love it, and my mom loves it, but I'm worried that it just looks lumpy and blah on me - like maybe it would work on me if I were 30 pounds lighter and not as wide as I am. I want to keep it, but I'm torn. http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_009b.jpg
6. Patterned linen dress from Romy. I love the print & colors in the dress but it is so wrong - way too small in the bust, spaghetti straps, too long. GIVE AWAY. http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_081l.jpg
7. Teal faux-wrap dress from Forever 21. In some ways I think maybe this could be the only thing I have that would work over leggings (though I have never found a pair of leggings that worked on me, and I don't really want to waste time trying.) Plus, the sleeve detail on this dress is terrible. I think I'm going to GIVE AWAY. http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_139b.jpg
http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_147b.jpg
8. Black polka-dot dress with ruffle/flutter sleeve detail from the Gap. I am surprised by how many compliments I get when I wear this dress which makes me think I should keep it. http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_421b.jpg
The skirts - I am feeling very uncertain about the skirts because I am so used to wearing pencil skirts and am not sure if my big hips and short waist can pull off an A-line at all - I'd love some feedback on this issue.
9. Reversible skirt from the Gap. Not sure about this one. (Brown print on one side, turquoise on the other.) http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_433b.jpg
http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_434b.jpg
10. Self-made skirt. I'm proud of myself for learning how to make this, but pastel florals are not kind to my skin tone. GIVE AWAY. (See, there really are colors that I can't wear...) http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_435b.jpg
11. Denim skirt from JC Penney. The hem detail on this is terrible, so I'd want to slightly shorten the skirt to make a new, more solid hem. But is the skirt shape okay? (Keep?) http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_437b.jpg
12. Heavy cotton/lycra skirt with pockets from Express: Keep, I think. http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_441b.jpg
13. Black skirt with heavy pleating from Topshop. I think it's too much volume - GIVE AWAY? http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_443b.jpg
14. Pink patterned circle skirt from Gap outlet. It has a tendency to blow up Marilyn Monroe-style in a heavy breeze, but looks lovely while dancing. More practically, it's a very nice weight for hot weather. But is the color horrible? http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_444b.jpg
15. Paisley skirt from Express. I love to pair this with fuschia or a bright medium purple. Keep? http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_446b.jpg
16. A-line black cotton (chino?) skirt from Gap outlet. Needs to be taken in slightly at the waist IF it's worth keeping. http://i645.photobucket.com/al.....G_450b.jpg
Also, an update to my ongoing search to find shoes for an upcoming bridesmaid's dress - I sincerely hope that the search is over. The bride and fellow bridesmaids all agreed that we would be okay each picking our own shoes (we all live far away from each other so group shopping is a challenge, and each of us have various foot shape/comfort/pickiness challenges, so the bride advised us to just pick out our own shoes.) We agreed on an off-white sandal. I wanted to try the Naturalizer Whistler sandals that Tarzy picked up but wasn't able to find them nearby to try out. However, I found these Clarks for a good deal ($65!) and am now sold on the comfort factor. I never thought they would be as comfortable as they are seeing as how the toe box is narrow AND they have a slight peep toe, but my toes love them and the sole is terribly comfortable.

Kari, it's amazing how different one person can look in different dress and skirt styles. I don't have time to comment on each right now, but my favorite was the Express #12, but didn't notice the pockets. Do they lay flat? Many of the dresses and skirts posted are OK and useful to you for your dancing but not as fab on you as other outfits you've posted. You might slowly phase them out as you pick up replacements that make you feel fantastic.
The shoes you posted look classy and comfortable to wear with pants or a suit but don't seem dressy enough for a wedding, probably because of the dark stacked heel. They seem a great leg-extending nude color but not off-white in the photo. I'd keep them but keep looking for the wedding.
Joy, thanks for your feedback. On the Express skirt, the pockets are actually the entire "triangle" area on the hips of that skirt, but the pocket hole is quite high, horizontal to the ground, and hidden by all but the shortest tops. I'm glad that one still works and doesn't make me look *too* hippy.
Oh dear, I really hope I'm not back at square one with wedding shoes. I've been scouring shoe websites & stores for months and have had very little luck.
These are the only other shoes that seem suitable, and the other girls liked them when I sent them the pic as an idea I was looking at, but I haven't been able to find anywhere nearby that carries them in store, and you have to order them directly from Naturalizers to get the "stonehenge" color. http://www.naturalizer.com/Sho.....pg=3004791
I'm also wary of slingbacks (they tend to slip off of my heel OR cause blisters to it) and the heel height (normally 2 1/2 inch heels are okay, but I am going to be walking on gravel so need a sturdy, non-covered heel that I won't get scratched up.)
If I don't find anything suitable before the wedding, I guess I can always buy a cheap pair of heels that are marginally comfortable but may not last through the weekend, but I hate to waste money that way.
I only have time to do the dresses this morning, sorry. Will be back later for skirts and shoes.
1. Give away. Does not flatter your curves as it should.
2. Maybe under a cardi, but again, not as flattering to your hips as it should be.
3. Totally adorable and kicky. KEEP.
4. Jumper is also adorable. Keep.
5. Give away. The patterns, small at bust and large elsewhere, looks more like peasant/hippie than boho, and I don't think is flattering to your shape or coloring. (And I usually LOVE brown, so this is hard for me to say!)
6. I would keep the Romy if only because sometimes you need a longer pretty dress. With a shrug or a cardi, the spaghetti straps would be a non-issue.
7. Oh my gosh, I think you absolutely should KEEP the teal dress! It's so flattering to your shape, even if it is too short. I am sure you could wear this with skinnies or leggings (when you find ones you like).
8. Ditto on the polka-dot. Everyone needs a pretty polka-dot in their closet.
Kari--don't get rid of the teal dress! I thought it was the single most flattering item you have posted up there! If you hate it, you hate it, but it looks gorgeous on you.
Kari-
I'd love to respond, but I feel like I'm not qualified to do so. I am horrible at telling whether skirts and dresses are flattering, hence my big problem with finding my own skirts and dresses. In other words, I am not at all confident in my ability to give good feedback.
That said, I did look at all the photos, and I agree with most of what you said. But, I liked the Anthropologie brown dress (I really like the boho look though, even when it verges into hippie!) and the teal dress. I think you looked best in things that were quite fitted and structured. I'm like this, too, and it makes casual/summer dressing challenging. Fitted and structured just isn't comfortable and cool.
In terms of skirts, I think I pretty much agreed with you. In terms of color though, I think that a lot depends on the shirt that you wear with it. I'm more comfortable wearing less than flattering colors on the bottom half, although maybe that's because I didn't have a full length mirror until a couple of months ago. I think that the narrower the a-line, the better for you. Pleats and such tend to add more volume at the bottom. Again, the structure thing. I personally love full skirts though, and I think it's worth keeping some, especially if you can pair them with a structured top like a short-sleeve jacket or cardi.
Like Crwilson i don't feel confident enough to give feedback however the teal dress really stands out i think it could be great with leggings x
I wanted to add that I think that most of the things with the horizontal belting around the waist adds width, which is something that is generally not that flattering. I think we have similar body types, and that horizontal thing just cuts us in half. It's hard, though, to find dresses right now without that detailing around the waist.
Kari--I'd suggest keeping the last 2 dresses you posted and the last 2 skirts you posted, and giving away the rest--they just don't do you justice. Congrats on the closet cleanout! Mine's been ongoing since I found YLF!
Definitely try leggings w/ the teal dress if you get a chance.
Unfortunately, I can't see the shoes you bought working for a wedding where you're the bridesmaid. The Naturalizers you posted seem much too casual, as well.
I thought the teal dress was flattering on you - a bit short but worthwhile trying with leggings or skinnies. (Could you take it shopping with you and just try it on with leggings in a dressing room? Then you would know. Also, could you layer a longer skirt under it? )
The black skirt (last one) has a nice shape and seems very work appropriate. Worth taking it in.
The shoes - I don't think they say wedding. Is it an option to find something inexpensive to wear for pics and short time and then change into these for rest of reception? I know we all hate investing a lot into "one use" items for our bridesmaids duties (been there in a long yellow floral gown if you can picture that) but Payless has lots of bridal looks for little $$$.
Kari: I'd keep 4,5,6,11,12,16. Maybe 15 as well.
The shoes look beautiful. They make your legs look even longer because of the color.
Back for skirts and shoes! :)
Okay...I just looked at all the skirts for the first time. I am not a fan of the voluminous style, for personal reasons; I have made the mistake over the last few years picking some of those up instead of waiting for a sleeker pencil skirt, and I never really liked how I looked in any of them. As a curvy person (and a pear as I now realize I am), all that material around my waist and thigh, as cute as it felt swishing around in the warm weather, just dragged me down.
That was my reaction when I looked at pretty much all of the skirts, sad to say. Most are also not hitting you in the right spot, too; 11 and 13 and another are too long, and the handmade one is too short. In all honesty, I would say keep the A-lines (12 and 16) and get rid of the rest. (Oh, it pains me to say that! I had to give up my skirts with a heavy heart. I thought they were all so cute and summery!)
To see what I'm talking about with the extra material dragging you down, compare any of the skirts shots here with how you look in the Express pencil you wore for Mrs. White. It's completely different!
Onto the shoes, a happier topic. :) The Clarks look great; the neutral is just enough, the shoe itself is pretty and not clunky, and the comfort factor cannot be beat! Especially when you will be on your feet at a wedding. I have the same trouble with slingbacks, and regret the two pairs I have bought in my lifetime. Don't do it if you have a better alternative, which you do!
If you're still not sold, I think you will probably have better luck now than you did in previous months; it's wedding season now so there are more options available.
I adore the patterned dress from Kohl's (KILLER), the denim jumper (Adorable), and the green F21 dress (gorgeous color and fit). Frankly, I wouldn't even bother with leggings for that green dress. You have great legs. I don't think it's too short - and isn't it the same length as the patterned dress and the jumper too? I think you can pull this length off just fine and in fact it's a quite flattering length for you.
I am similar: I find skirts and dresses look best exactly at the knee, or slightly above. If they are just below, technically it looks okay but I don't look quite as "kicky." I think your photos are a perfect demonstration of this: you look 20 lbs lighter in the shorter dresses!! I do wonder if some of your skirts could be saved, simply by hemming them up higher? (Esp the A-lines).
The Romy also looks great to me - though the hem could probably be taken up. You say it is too small in the bust? I guess I can't tell from the side view. What is wrong with spaghetti straps? They look fine to me in this photo.
The Anthropologie dress is my least favorite. I'm going to leave it at that, because I'm unsure how much of my opinion is colored by my own personal tastes.
Wow, by the time I got home last night the site was down, so apologies for not replying to thank each of you any sooner. I really appreciate the helpful and honest feedback. For the most part you're confirming that my concerns about most of these pieces are valid. I really, really appreciate all of you for wading through the immense amount of pieces & giving your two cents. (By the way, crwilson & Loulou, please don't think that your advice isn't valuable! Any feedback is helpful and I really appreciate you sharing your opinion, too.)
I was surprised to see how many people liked the teal Forever 21 dress. I wonder if part of the reason is that I was wearing heels in that picture? Either way, the positive feedback has convinced me to give the dress another try. I'm actually not sure if I've ever paired it with my skinnies - it seemed a bit long to wear over pants, but maybe it will work.
(Shiny, by the way, thanks for the sweet compliment RE: my legs. I was horrified at how chunky they looked in most of the pictures and am trying to remember that part of this really is due to the skirt hemline & heel height.)
Kristen really summarized my concerns about the A-line and circle skirts. I feel (and look) so much sleeker in a pencil skirt because they don't add bulk around the hips and show off my shape. That being said, I feel that pencil skirts are too formal and definitely not breezy enough for casual wear in hot weather (granted, how often do we really get hot weather in Seattle?) I hate to think that a pencil skirt or narrow straight skirt to the knee is the only thing I can wear, ever.
I think I should have taken a newer picture of the Romy dress to truly illustrate its problems - unfortunately this was the only full-length pic I could find. It's not totally obvious in the picture, but the top empire seam is actually coming pretty far up into my bustline, and I have to wear a lacy cami under the dress to avoid flashing everyone. Plus, with spaghetti straps, I am limited to only a strapless bra and so far have not found one that works. (I have a Le Mystere strapless that doesn't give great support anymore and causes painful welts/bruises around my ribcage by mid-day, and shopping for a new strapless in my size range is more trouble & expense than it's worth - for now it's easier just to banish pieces that require me to go strapless.)
In general, I'm actually getting very bored and discouraged with the limited amount of shapes that work on my body. I know I look good in knee-length pencil skirts, fitted button-downs, straight or bootleg pants, and cardigans, but it frustrates me that these are the only options I have. But I should probably save body shape woes for another day (or wait until I work my issues out of my system.)
At this point, I'm thinking of keeping only 3 (patterned dress from Kohl's), 4 (denim jumper), and tentatively 7 (the Forever 21 jumper) and the less voluminous skirts (12 and 16.) I might keep the paisley skirt around just because it's a great summer skirt and is so fun, but perhaps it's not worth it.
I love the Clarks shoes and plan on keeping them regardless of whether I wear them as a bridesmaid - I'm sure I'll get lots of wear at work or as a guest at other weddings. However, since the general consensus is that they are inappropriate as a bridesmaid, I'm really not sure what to do. I've been scouring shoe stores for months looking for shoes that meet my/the bridal party's criteria (off white sandal, low and chunky heel since we will be walking on gravel, comfortable) and have had no luck (even at bargain places like Target or Payless Shoes.)
I'm starting to think that I need to abandon the comfort factor and just aim for "probably won't cause blisters" as my comfort criteria. If anyone has suggestions for a shoe that would work, I'd love it if you would send links my way - I am really stumped.
Kari-
What you said about being bored and discouraged about the "limited amount of shapes that work on my body" echoes exactly how I feel. I have the same thing going on. Maybe we should start a new thread about it. Just wanted to let you know that you're not alone! I too find that I apparently only look good in pencil skirts, tailored jackets, and/or cardigans, and sheath dresses. Grrr...
Kari and Christine,
Exactly how I feel too! Knee-length skirts, wrap dresses and tops, and bootcut jeans (and even these have to be of a very particular cut), and that's it. Grrrrr indeed. Do you want to start a new thread about it? Maybe others will have some fresh ideas?
I must say, though, that both of you are young and very beautiful, and look great in everything you ever posted.
Wow. A magnanimous effort. Here are my thoughts on the frocks, Kari:
o Pink dress – Not the best shape. I vote pass on. Love you in the colour though.
o Black dress – Not your best. I vote pass on.
o Geometric dress – Fabulous!
o Pinafore – Nice. Keep.
o Boho dress – Not so fab. I vote pass on.
o Strappy dress – Sweet.
o Teal dress –Great! Nice with leggings.
o Black spot dress - lovely! Keep.
Kari, I had exactly the same reaction to my fluffier skirts too; I wanted to keep them for the hotter weather, when a pencil seemed like a bad idea. Luckily, I am too small for all of them now so the point is moot. *g* But I've been buying dresses instead this summer so I won't fall into the same predicament again. And I'm trying to find dresses in all kinds of styles so I won't feel like I am stuck wearing the same uniform shape all the time.
Another thing I do to keep myself from getting bored is buy pants in different lengths and cuts. This forces me to change around my shoe height and my tops; what looks good with one cut won't with another.
Lastly *g*, I just saw a post on Glamour about dressing up your floral skirt in different ways. So if you keep any, maybe this will inspire you!
CrWilson & Hannah, I was thinking of starting a thread about this topic, but I'm really in a funk about my body shape/size this week so I'm concerned that my post would just end up being whiny and complainy. I might wait until I'm in a better frame of mind to address body issues. For now I'm still mulling over a lot of the discussion points that came up in Hannah's "Pushing the envelope" thread.
Truth be told, I have also not worked very hard to try out some of the "different" shapes that Angie has mentioned here. I have brought out a few cowl-neck pieces, purchased one tunic, and gingerly started wearing skinny jeans more often (the latter of which I've had for two years but am shy about wearing them, and it took me another year before that until I found a pair that worked on me.) I haven't put much effort into finding leggings that worked on me (I got discouraged after trying several pairs that looked awful either because they were too sheer/not the right style/tried on with the wrong thing.) I haven't looked for a banded top because I didn't think I'd like the shape (and frankly, I have a lot of tops already), but with Kristen's demonstration of how fab a curvy gal can look in banded blouses, I'm thinking I may at least try a few on in a dressing room.
I also want to note that I *have* made some success not in breaking out of my uniform, but adding to it so I feel more fab, largely through accessories. I'm still learning how to do this, but am realizing more and more how experimenting with the finishing touches (a statement necklace, a belt in the right place, a floral pin) can make me feel more creative and not as bored with my established style. Accessories can allow me to try *something* new even if the newest shape/style is too unkind to my curves for me to wear it.
Angie, thank you too for kindly stepping in to add your perspective on what should stay and what should go. I think the verdict is pretty clear now.
You have all convinced me to keep the teal dress around. The strappy Romy dress is still going - it's just not worth feeling exposed and uncomfortable in it due to poor fit & troublesome undergarments. I might put it up for swap to see if someone else can get use from it. I loved the dress in theory and would definitely look for a similar piece that fits better.
My dear, Kari! It surprises me that you’re feeling blue about your hot bod. I had just mentioned on Hanna’s thread that your style is evolving daily and that you are looking better than you have EVER looked on this forum. You have a natural poise and elegance that can’t be bought or taught. You lucky fish! It’s coming through more and more as you discover new things about your style. I’d say that’s pretty amazing and I am therefore giving you the next YLF award for the lass who’s most in tune with trying something new. I’m proud of you :0)
Angie, I can't tell you how much your words buoyed my spirits. Thank you for being so encouraging and pointing out what I didn't see myself. I just read your feedback on the Clue thread too, and it made my day to hear that pushing myself to try new things is not only working, but is gradually adding more to my style (even if the changes come in baby steps.) I am smiling from ear to ear.
As for feeling blue - it's mostly just a temporary funk caused by looking at too many older (thinner) pictures and unconsciously judging my current size against them. Silly, I know, but I'll get over it.
Hi Kari
I completely second what Angie is saying above! I've been admiring your style transformation and your natural grace ever since you first started posting!
And: I really do think you can wear A-line skirts, the 'structured' ones 'without any fullness'. I'm quoting Laura here, we had a thread about this a few weeks ago. Did you see it? Scroll down a bit and you'll notice that I'm in the same boat too. I love the look of fuller skirts, but can't pull them off. Structured A-lines and pencil skirts are my best bet (at least some variety right?-).
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....e-skirts-2
These skirts are a little more difficult to find (at least for me, if I want them to hit me at the knee), but we could help you look if you want to give them a go.
Kari-
I think that you've looked so cute in all the Clue challenges that you posted. I'm like you, too, in that I take a long time to adopt anything new. (I also just found out that you are a former-lit major - me too!) But I've been impressed at how many different kinds of clothes and outfits I've seen you wear.
There's nothing like a slew of ill-fitting and skirts to do a number on one's self esteem. I was right where you are a few weeks ago because I had ordered a million skirts & dresses, and all of them made me look like I had instantly gained 15 pounds. As soon as I returned them, I was able to remind myself that it was the style of the clothes, not me, that was the problem.
Kari, I don't want to say much as I'm still learning myself, but I echo Kristen's views as I'm a curvy gal myself. All the tiered voluminous skirts just don't do you justice.
You look wonderful in every outfit I have seen you in the last few weeks that I have been on the forum. The best part of all your outfits has been your confidence and your beautiful smile. It is very easy for curvy women to be dragged down by ill-fitting and unflattering clothes. And it is a teensy bit of a drag we have to be more careful with what we wear as compared to say someone with smaller bust and hips. I can only wish that I can look half as confident having found what works for me. So keep smiling and rocking your style on your fab bod!
Don't forget how amazing you looked in the black tunic and straight leg jeans! That look was killer, and definitely a break from your usual. The necklace you added took that outfit even higher into orbit - and that just proves that you can do it!
There you go darling, Kari. I am not the only one who is impressed with your style :0)
Don't look at older pictures because you blossomed into a beautiful young lady and are still blossoming. Until the cows home! You are perfect right now.
Wow, I am a bit overwhelmed! Inge, CrWilson, Niva, Tara, and Angie, thank you a million for your kind words. Okay, you win. I am trying to focus less on what I can't wear or how I used to look and try to be more appreciative of the body I have. These days, most of the time I feel pretty confident about my body - this just happens to be a week where I'm stuck in a funk. Hearing that my style has noticeably improved in the not-quite three months since I started posting here REALLY felt great to hear. Thank you all.
Inge, I saw that thread with Kendra when it first started, but I forgot to check back to see all of the awesome recommendations all of you provided. Thank you for calling it to my attention! I'm drooling over some of the pretty skirts you linked to.
Kari I was going to chime in (late I know), but realised I was going to echo what pretty much everyone else has said; there seems to be an almost unanimous decision on what you should keep. I wouldn't feel bad about the number of items we're suggesting you pass on, because you look so stylish and polished in all your recent posts, you are setting a VERY high standard to live up to!!!
I know body blues are normal to have every now and then, but I just wanted to encourage you not to worry if not every style/trend works for you - what you wear well looks great!!! Remember I loved the CM microchecks on you so much more than on me! Everyone has things that do and don't work.
p.s. please try the teal dress on with skinnies if you are wary of tights!~!!!
Let us know if you try one of the 'straighter' A-line skirts Kari. I know you can rock this style too!
Tam, thank you! You are so sweet and uplifting. I will definitely try the pleated top with skinnies or clams since I don't currently have leggings. :) Maybe I'll post an experimental pic this week.
I definitely don't take it personally when the consensus is that many/most of the items I posted here don't work. I have other dresses and skirts that I DO wear regularly and look good on me, but I just wasn't sure if any of THESE were flattering, and really appreciate the honest, helpful feedback I received. Now I can make some much-needed room in my closet. That being said, the frugal part of me cringes at the money wasted (even though most of these were quite cheap) and at giving away something that is still in good shape. I just need to be altruistic and practical and realize that if they don't work for me, they have to be good for SOMEONE else...
I have two more skirts that I didn't post pictures of because they no longer fit. *sad face* They are cute, though, so I may put them up for swapping at some point.
Inge, thanks, I will let you know if I try any. Actually, the Boden "Fun Skirt" in white really caught my eye. I love the clean style and the colors - I have so many solid tops/cardis/jackets that I can think of wearing with it. I'm not sure if the design would be too big or overwhelming. However, with free shipping, 15% off, and free returns at the moment, I may just order to try it out.
