Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Chestnut

I just wanted to share a little realization I had about the whole chestnut trend. I know chestnut has become a popular color for fall around here. I had tried to make it work for me, and then finally resigned myself to it as a color that was just not for me, to be admired on others. I had tried various chestnut/cognac shaded items and they just didn't seem to be "me." But recently, after seeing Angie's chestnut slouchy boot and frock photos and a few different items in stores, it dawned on me that I just hadn't found the right shade of chestnut for my dark skin and brown hair. Angie's boots are on the nude end of the spectrum, which works great with her blond hair but would never be right on me. Instead, I've come to realize that "my" chestnut is actually a dark (but not chocolate), very *rich* brown. In fact, I'm wondering now if "chestnut" as meant by Angie is not so much the shade, but the depth and richness of the brown. Now I'm delighted with chestnut as a potential option of me. I also realize that it's a lot like finding your personal nude shade. So maybe I've just been slow in catching on, but I wanted to share.

How are you feeling about chestnut for yourself?

Patience, that makes alot of sense. I also don't feel that the lighter versions of chesnut/cognac really work on me. I adore a dark chocolate brown which works better with my skintone and seems a bit "earthier" than my usual standby, black.

I know what you mean, Patience. Here is my chestnut:

I wouldn't mind boots that color, or a bag, without contrast sticthing though.

Patience, that makes so much sense to me. Whenever I look at boots my eye goes for the earthy brown. I can't go with what I think is chestnut which is sort of orange.
Marianne, I LOVE your shoes. Are they new and still in the stores? That color of chestnut is yummy for sure.

Thanks Sandy! I got them a few years ago and I can't find them online. They are Sofft, and it seemed to be a pretty common color in that brand, at least then.

Thanks Marianne. I will look at the Sofft brand and see if they are still offering that color. It looks to be sort of the color of caramel candy don't you think?

San, I think the color is between these:

It has a little bit of red in it compared to caramel. I don't remember the name of the style, unfortunately :(

Interesting observation, Patience! It ties in with this article I read recently about connecting colors to your hair color:

I've never considered chestnut for myself, not being a brown person, but after reading the article and your comments, there's probably a dark shade of chestnut out there for me!

Well aren’t you a clever little sausage, Patience. 100% reasoning, btw.

It took me FOREVER to find the right warm, soft, light chestnut AND comfy 10-hour boots to boot. My chestnut has to have a golden glint in the hue to match my hair – just like yours has to be a darker and richer version.
