Canadian Winter: What It Looks Like Now!

When I opened the door yesterday morning I was so discouraged. And so am I today. I can't see the day when I'll be able to wear my booties. Nor a purse, or most of my wardrobe for that matter. Not that it's the wrong season, but it's just not practical! The only thing that works, pretty much, under my parka, are wool tights, turtlenecks and wool dresses or skirts... skinny jeans are stretching it (literally!), as it is too cold for them alone. Nylons must be worn under any pants. only the toughest boots work. And forget any hairdo with tuques and scarves!

Surely I'm not alone? Fellow Canadians, how are you coping?

Not sure where you are, but our weather has been strange this winter, in the Maritimes. It seems to alternate between super cold, and somewhat warm. We have snow down, but definitely not as much as we should have. I have noticed over the past 5 years or so that this seems to be the trend and I think it's getting colder out West.

Anyway on the really bitterly cold days I usually just forgo anything fashionable and wear my North Face parka, my North Face lined tall boots and any sort of comfy pants and shirt. I hate being cold more than anything else!

Raisin, I so agree. These days my need for warmth overrides my inclination for style. BTW I am in Ottawa.

I grew up in Almonte, Krish, so that is what a proper winter means to me. Peterborough is strange, we are in a little pocket where we sometimes get Ottawa weather and sometimes Toronto, or most of the time some weird third thing! When I get to work I'll post our wind/snow/thunderstorm of yesterday morning -- only lasted 2 hours but it was something to see!

In the past week we have had 13C temps, -25C temps, rain, snow, sleet, -3C which was SO DAMP and uncomfortable. I don't mind cold and dry, it is this -3 to -10 and damp and dank that gets to me! We haven't had nearly as much snow as normal either.

I just give up and bring my nice shoes to work and just wear the same green parka and tall boots outside.

We are in the middle of a cold snap here in Scotland but not as severe as your weather Krish, keep safe and warm.

This is overlooking the valley behind my house (you'd never know there was anything there) and the second is looking up the road up a hill. We had almost complete whiteout and cars stuck all up and down the road because the rain we had the night before flash froze and then this was the snow/thunderstorm after.

We had so much wind our barbecue blew right across our deck and our deck chairs blew down into the yard (our deck is one storey up).

Chicago has been snowless, but now is quite cold, which is doubly depressing. I'm struggling to find motivation, even though I have no shortage of work to do! Fortunately, I run warm and am rather "tough" in the cold. Of course, I'm working from home today, and I'm still in my loungewear at 10:30. I've stilled not figured out how to dress on days like today.

Wow, the video makes the wind factor seem so cold! It hardly ever even snows where I live. I do love visiting places with snow, but it would be hard to put up for months!!!

We pay for the lack of snow with long months of summer oppressive heat though. Wish I could mail some to y'all!

We had 18" where I live in Wisconsin right before Christmas, but now it's pretty much gone. Hang in there!!

Wow Ceit, that is something! You get it worse than us! I so agree about the damp weather being worse than crisp cold. I just hate it when the cold humidity creeps up from every little openings of your clothes to surprise you with shiver.

Beth Ann, I never know either! Pajamas might actually be the best thing!

Isis, lucky you. I admit heat is no fun either though, when there is too much of it.

Heh, we don't have long summers, but ours are pretty hot and steamy....I think Ottawa is the most extreme capital country in the world in terms of lows and highs...freezing cold in the winter and broiling hot in the summer!

Our range is about -35-40C (with windchill) to +35-40C (albeit with humidex)

From this far away (& in this heat) it looks so beautiful. I can't imagine trying to do normal daily things though:)

I have enclosed a picture of my outside today It's definitely crummy - my commute went from 25 minutes in the summer to an hour and a bit; and there were tons of cars in the ditch and my ABS went off at least 6x. And I have a 4x4!

Man, all the things we put up with for universal health care! HAR HAR.

Ceit, but I do prefer the Summers (maybe precisely because they are short). It's just generally easier. You are right on our extreme temperatures. When I lived in other countries, I always was astonished at how little demarcation there was from season to season, and locals were raving about their "four seasons"... !

Caro, it's true, it's beautiful when we are on our days off. Unfortunately, as Beth Ann says, there is no shortage of work to be done, actually more than usual. All I could do today was to tell myself, all right, one more thing, one more thing... It looks like we are on the Moon when we drive. And that in itself is quite cool.

Lyn, I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one setting off the ABS lately!
It's true that any tiny commute becomes a voyage, right? I come home and I feel I have battled something... literally... oh yeah, right, the elements.

Wow....you have it really rough!!

In Kingston, we had a few massive snowfalls just after Christmas. But when I left town this morning, there was NO snow on the ground whatsoever. It had melted on some warm, rainy days last week. However, this morning it was bitterly cold in Kingston. I got to Toronto (where there is a tiny dusting of snow) and it was still cold, but a whole lot warmer than Kingston.

I think I am in an easier position in other ways, as well. I rarely have to look professional. So if I decide to wear gear because it is what will keep me warm, it's okay. Sometimes I will wear my Gap sweater with my long underwear underneath and that's it.

I hear you on how frustrating it is to try to dress like a real person in this weather. This is where the skinny trousers and boots uniform really helps. My regular long underwear doesn't feel nice under skinnies (too bunchy./ bulky) but silk underwear is okay. Also, I find my Gap Really Skinny pants (not jeans) to be somewhat warmer. So with knee high boots, those pants, wool socks, a cami, a shirt, a merino sweater and a wool jacket PLUS my puffer coat or wool coat, I am all right even on the cold, cold days. That's what I wore today for my travels.

VERY harsh weather. I just couldn't do it unless it was NYC where they have the streets cleared up in less than a day. We were there through a blizzard once - that happened in the afternoon. And by the next morning, the snow was piled up (like 20 feet piled up) and everyone was out and about again.

Krish - I am in Ottawa too and hasn't it just been miserable? Ugh! It's wearing on the soul, I find. Also, wardrobe ideas are hard to implement because what if you get stuck somewhere in the cold! You have to be prepared.
I know how you feel - just wanted to share that with you!
