can the busty-ish wear double breasted?

Not sure of my current bra size (getting another fitting soon) but I was a 34 DD and I know I'm a bit smaller, at least in the cup, now. I almost hope the answer to this question is NO, because it would remove the temptation to buy this:

I would say yes if the buttons are relatively close to each other, which they seem to be on that plaid dress. Very pretty item, btw.

When I read your question I thought: tricky, but might work with a lowered neckline and non-bulky fabric. Then I look at the photo and voila, that is what I see. My only doubts with this dress are the straight lines of the plaid. It won't look so great if they are pulled out of line, but aside from that, it could work.

I recently decided to make my life easier and just eschew double-breasted anything. It will always make me look wider than something that's not double-breasted, and life's too short to try and make it work. (32F, for the record.)

I'm a 34F and I'd totally wear something like that (well on me the skirt length would have to be shortened, but), I think because it's not so much the double-breasted part as the portrait collar that is the standout feature.

Only thing is, I personally would find it risky to purchase a one-off piece like that without being able to try it on. But that's just me!

I wear DB coats and jackets, no problem. They are low contrast and narrow-set so it should look fine.

In this case I would say yes because the plaid is much more dominant than the double-breasted design, and besides how can you pass up something called a wiggle dress?

That has a 38 bust, though, I just noticed...I'm still so new at this, and I know that because my bra size is 34 that I need a dress that's bigger than 34 (I think?) but 38 is probably TOO much extra space. It sure is gorgeous though.

The 38 is the bust measurement, and the best way to figure out yours is with a tape measure. At 32F, I have a 36.5-37 inch bust measurement, and I usually look for a 37 measurement in vintage dresses. 38 to 39 will give a bit more room--perfect for a 40s swing dress, but a little blousy for a 50s wiggle dress.

Bust measurements are tough because, at least in my experience,it has more to do with how much fabric there is in the front than what the measurement is. I am pretty small even at the fullest part of my bust (33", my band size is 28), but even when I find shirts with a 33-34" bust, if the fabric wasn't distributed properly for my proportions, it won't fit.

Thanks, good to know. But now I'm confused - let me clarify this. When I'm looking for a dress, do I need to go by the band size or the size of the fullest part of my bust? I'm not positive what my current band size is but I just had my MIL measure the fullest part of my bust and it was 36. So should I look for 36 bust?

Definitely not the band size (because that ignores the cups). You should measure a similar item (or an item of a similar fabrication) that fits properly to make sure, but you'll probably be looking for items with a 36-37" bust measurement, at least as far as 50s/60s wiggle dresses go. Jackets are a separate inquiry, and the best thing is to measure one you have that fits you well.

The bust measurement on a dress is measured across the fullest part, so you need to measure both yourself and some garments to see what might work on you. Your bra band size is the underbust measurement, and has nothing to do with garment sizing.

Tricia, measure something that fits you as you would like what you are ordering to fit. The whole bra size thing is just too confusing IMHO. I usually like a 36-38 measurement depending on stretch factor, as I like things a bit looser, especially if they need to button up or in a coat - I might go as high as 40 for outerwear.

I agree with Una 100%. But I still would not consider it a guarantee for the reasons I mentioned.
