Buy or keep looking? Yellow winter coat

I've been wanting a red winter coat, or at least a bright coloured coat for a while. The other day I stumbled over this yellow coat at Unikko.

Reasons I like it:
- I adore the colour! The yellow has a slight green or lime undertone and is actually not washing me out. (I think I've entered a yellow phase. I'm drawn to the colour in lots of stuff and it makes me really happy)
- I like the a-line shape and the length of the coat.
- The collar isn't too large (I think).
- The buttons are fun.
- The detail seams below the shoulders is fun + is giving a slight structure to the coat
- The sleeves are easily shortened

Considerations:
- Is the fit good or is it overwhelming me (I'm petite)? Even if sleeves are shortened?
- Are the pockets too attention grabbing, too large or do they have a childish vibe?
- Is a bright yellow colour too much?
- How versatile is it?
- It's quite expensive, so I'd like it to be great (not just good). I think it will be on sale because they SA said it was a bit hard to sell (the colour was tricky or it was too small)

PS It doesn't feel too large when worn, but I find it hard to judge if the fit is right. I don't have any coats in this silhouette.

I love the color and the coat. I think the final decision really depends on your personal style. This coat has a very graphic feel to me. A very defined shape, with clear and bold lines, and the pockets are noticeable, and so are the buttons. The fit is large IMO, but I like the way it looks. I don't think a smaller size would look as nice. I actually think a slightly larger coat is warmer because there is a layer of air between you and the coat for insulation. I wouldn't call it childish looking.

I have a golden yellow coat very similar to the one you are considering...I bought it several years ago...My problem is I just havn't worn it...I try i and somehow the golden bright yellow just doesn't translate to my neutral preferences...I would be very sure that the color is not going to be a problem...It is a lovely coat...This is just my experience...Good luck..

I love the colour. My eyes were drawn to the pockets. Combined with the buttons I do think this coat has a retro?/ fun vibe rather than straight-up classic tailored. I think you have an element of that in your style though? I think the sleeves alteration will change the overall fit and shape impression.

Well, I think it looks fantastic on you! And it would certainly brighten up dreary winter days.

Would this be your only winter coat or do you have others? For myself, even though I love the coat, I probably wouldn't purchase it as my primary winter coat. I'd be concerned that I'd get tired of the color if I wore it all the time. But if I could rotate it with two or three other coats and jackets and it looked as good as it does on you, I'd get it.

On the other hand, even if it's your only coat, you might just want to call this the Winter of the Beautiful Yellow Coat and wear the heck out of it! It depends on your need for variety.

As a fellow petite, I sympathize with the sizing issue. Winter coats always look too big on me (or, if they fit, the sleeves are too short). But I agree with Staysfit: the extra room adds warmth and insulation, and allows you to wear chunky sweaters and even jackets underneath.
On the color: my winter coat is a bright, orange-y red puffer. When I bought it a few years ago, I was tired of the sea of greys, blacks, and browns of most coats. I must say that sometimes it is a bit challenging to match--tho I have no choice; it's my warmest coat and I wear it with everything. I figure, I'll take it off as soon as I arrive places anyway, so the mismatching doesn't bother me too much and it's mostly about bottoms. While sometimes I wish I had a more sober option, I must tell you that I get compliments all the time on the vibrant color. As in, strangers stop me on the street (not to mention colleagues and friends). If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there's something to be said for the appreciation a vibrant color brings to people even if it's not the most conventional or safe choice!

I understand the desire for a bright colored coat because I've searched (unsuccessfully for 2 years now) for one too.

I really really like this for you. Once the sleeves are hemmed, the fit looks good. I love the color with your dark hair. I agree with Jules' assessment of the style, which I think is fun.

I really like the idea of a bright, happy color. I love the yellow, but you seem to be drowning in this particular coat.

Staysfit - So true that room for extra air is insulating and warmer. I have a bottle green wool coat that is quite fitted. I can't layer much under and I can't wear it when freezing cold (-4/5 Celsius and colder)

Jules - Yes, I love vintage and like to add a retro element to my outfits.

Windchime - I have a grey parka, a green wool coat (vintage), a camel hair coat (vintage), caramel-ish jacket with wool inside (vintage) and a dark blue puffer jacket ('70-ish style). I'm always grabbing my parka, even when a coat or peacoat would be far better (i.e. with skirts and dresses). I was thinking that a proper wool coat would be dressier, more appropriate and cohesive. LOVE "the Winter of the Beautiful Yellow Coat"!!

Stering - I'll scrunch the sleeves and have a second, critical look when I try it again. I do think the sleeve shortening will alter the overall impression, though.

Hmmm... maybe a more classic coat would fit better in my wardrobe? All my winter coats / jackets are vintage or retro - except the parka which is 8-9 years old.
