BR dress and GAP cullotes -K/R

Hello YLF,

Angie's post about the BR dress Friday let me intrigued and I ordered the red one. It arrived today and it turns out it is more a brick red which I really enjoy. The shirring on the sides and front always leave me confused. I don't know if the rushing seems intentional or if it looks tight ( which is not ).

Regarding the cullotes they are a linen blend and they might be a bit big on the waist .

I look forward to your opinions and don't want to influence you one way or other.

The dress color is fab on you. I think the fit looks good but I have trouble seeing the details in this photo, for the shirring and where it may crease or not, which is an issue for me. One thing I look for is whether the dress shimmies up and has to be tugged down, or if it stays put/slides back when you move.

Bravo for trying culottes! However I think these are cut too full, too much material overall, maybe too many gathers or pleats; and maybe also should be drapier. There are so many variations on culottes that it may be challenging to find "the ones".

unfrumped the dress doesn't ride up, the feeling I have is that there is so much ruching that I don't know where to put the fabric.

I am waiting on my dress to arrive (ordered the green/blue). I had tried this dress on awhile back, when all they offered was the olive/black striped version. I was very on the fence about the dress, and went back twice to try it on. The reason had more to do with the olive (not one of my core neutrals) and the stripes (didn't flatter my tummy bulges). Anyway, I played around with the dress in the dressing room and it seemed you could wear it either pulled down -- midi length -- or scrunched up around the waist?

As for the culottes, I think you can do better, then again, these might work with a longer top (skirt length) and with heels?

Cella, we cross-posted: try pulling the dress down -- cuz I know just what you mean by it feeling like too much ruching around the waist and not knowing where to put it...

I love the colour of the dress for you and the general idea of culottes on you... but I confess I find the fit of both of these. The dress - the torso feels too long to me. The culottes - I agree they're big at the waist. It may be the pleating.

WOW. The colour of the dress is amazing on you, Celia. I echo what Shiny said - pull the dress down and make sure you're wearing undies that don't show through knitted fabrics. The ruching will self-adjust, if you know what I mean. OR, you need a petite.

Culottes are a good fit on the rise, but I do find that there is too much volume from the hips down. I vote return those.

Hmm, to me the dress looks too long in the waist (my perennial problem too!) and I worry that if you pull it down the neckline will be too low. Maybe you need a petite? I love the color on you too.

I actually ordered those culottes in black. I was attracted by the fact that they are both wide AND mid rise (a rare combo). They haven't arrived yet but I think I am going to have the same issue as you with the pleating being too voluminous. I actually ordered a size up as I though maybe they would sit lower that way; I have no idea if that would work but did you try a larger size? With pleated things sometimes that works for me - dropping the whole thing down an inch might make the pleats sit flatter because they start below the hip shelf. No guarantee it'll work though.

Angie I will play around with the length and underwear to see how it feels. I highly recommend the dress btw, it is very comfortable.

Diana , we had the same idea. I ordered one size bigger, maybe that is why I feel it so puffy.

I agree with Diana -- the fit on the dress looks a little odd to me, and I think it does look like the torso is too long (my frequent problem too). But the color is beautiful on you. I also think the culottes are too stiff and voluminous -- I want to see something more drapey and flowy on you.

You may have wsaved me from ordering the culottes here I think this is not the right shape for the "hippies"- -too much volume in that area. I also vote return those.
The dress is nice, color is beautiful on you (although I would also like to see teal on you). My only concern is that it looks tight across the backside. have you tried the size uip and maybe in petite to get a shorter torso?

Bummer. Sounds like I'll probably be returning the culottes too. I think Sveta is right - just not the right shape for "hippies." (Ha! Love that term.)

Angie, I will still try it pulled down and with someone else taking pictures( it occurred to me that the perspective of a 7 year old might make proportions weird ). As I told you in the blog post I trust your choices

In love with that dress, Celia! You can probably find better culottes for you. Hard to tell from pics, but are you a Petite (apologies if you've already said)? I am, so I'm considering that before ordering the dress.

Love the dress on you -- such a lovely color. I think culottes that are either more drapey or slimmer and structured would work better for you. Glad you tried them, though!

Love the dress on you! I order it in that color to. I am hoping it gets here sooner that the tracking says. I hope you can it work for you.
