I struggle with this too... if zappos.com is an option, you can narrow down your boot search by calf circumference. It is helpful, but not the only indicator of whether boots will be a perfect fit. It also matters where the widest point of your calf is. I am short, so my widest point is lower than most. That means if very tall boots have a wide calf circumference at the top, they are going to be too wide, like rain boots at the top. This gapping is not attractive. I measured a pair of my favorite boots that I know fit well and tried to replicate these measurements. When I shopped for boots recently I scoured online retailers for boots that were 14" high and 15" circumference. Wish me luck, my new boots should be here today!
