Black top + black leggings?

I have been looking for a shirt dress for literally years but haven't had any luck finding them because they are all belted or otherwise just do not fit me right. I finally found one that is shaped without being belted and has cute details and would be perfect over leggings, clams, and skinnies, but my only color options are beige, a rusty orange red, and black.

I could wear the red color well, but somehow just have a preference for black. This particular shade of red isn't something I normally wear and it has a very desert/Southwest vibe to me. The beige option doesn't seem to be the evil color-draining beige Angie doesn't like, but I'm not really sure I like it anyway.

But since all my leggings and my favorite jeans are black, I'm wondering if that would be too much black? Is there a way to make it work?

Its a a great shirtdress, and its true how hard it is to find something beltless. I've been looking. Could you wear it alone as a dress in the summer?

I like the black one, and think you could wear it with black leggings or denim. And of course with white or blue denim. Didn't Shiny pair her black shirt dress with black leggings?

Oh yes you're right Cricket, she did. Actually, I also have white leggings and I have been wondering how to wear them. Maybe this is my opportunity to try them out! I guess I'm so used to wearing at least 2 bright colors that I find it hard to wrap my head around a neutral or monochromatic outfit. The other colors are very earthy and not really a part of my overall color palette (totally thought of Jean when I saw them though!).

I'm not really sure if I could wear it on its own. The length is fine for me. I don't mind wearing mini dresses, and this would be a mini on me. I'm just not sure if it's the kind of dress that lends itself to being a mini dress, if that makes sense.

Actually, I just noticed that the dress is a mini on the models, so on me it will likely hit at the knee, or just a little bit above, so I could probably wear it on its own.

I was going to say Jean also wore her black leggings with a black dress and it worked really well for her as well. So I am sure you can wear black on black.

I wondered about the length. When I see a fit like that on a model, I usually assume it would be long enough for me to wear knee-length. But I have short legs and you don't!

That is such a cute dress. Especially because it's sleeveless and shows some skin (or color can be added with a cardi), I think it would be fine with black leggings. Black dress/whiteleggings combo with your black and white Me Toos could be really sharp.

Sweet shirt dress, Maya. You MUST get. I like both the rust and the black for you.

I am currently wearing a black top and black leggings - love the look with LOADS of texture. I accomplish the textures with: white pearls, white watch, pewter sandals, blue toe nails, zippered leggings, white specs and a big satin ruffle on a SLEEVELESS tunic. I think that showing more skin is key to making black on black work in Summer. Hope that makes sense.

The red is very nice but if you are more comfortable with the black then go with that. Black on black sounds very urban but the style of dress is very laid back cool so I think it works.

I really like the dress (am thinking of it for myself if i get a job) in black. I think it would be sophisticated in black with black jeans and I love Angie's texture descriptions. I also think in the fall you could add a colorful shirt underneath?

Another vote here for black. Angie makes great suggestions. You can always add a jean jacket and a colorful scarf and some interesting flats to make the outfit pop.

Hmm, I don't have a denim jacket yet and it is too hot for scarves. I guess I find it hard to add texture when it gets hot out, because it usually means wearing more stuff. I'm going to get the black anyway. I know it's not everyone's taste, but I like white leggings and I think black and white would look pretty sharp. So even if I can't find a way to make the all-black look work, at least I can wear it that way, and over jeans.

You can use black leggings with a black dress and accessorize with a colorful belt and bag, for example a red belt and a red beg, it's fun and it will give some color to the outfit!!

There is nothing wrong with it Tam. I am just not sure how to pull it off. I'm used to being very colorful, especially in the summer. It just seemed a bit severe. Black is my best neutral and I have tons of it, but I try to not use it all at once.

Am I right in assuming that this is probably not the best dress for stirrup leggings then? Cropped leggings would show more skin. It gets really hot here so I'm not planning to do any layering of any kind. No cardis, jackets, scarves. It's just not practical.

I think this will work just fine with black leggings, Maya. I am planning to wear mine with my black ATL ruffle shirt dress. I have tried this out already (didn't take pics) and it looks good together. It follows Angie's advice - it's sleeveless, and the leggings have faux silver snaps, which somehow (even if it is such a small detail) break up all the black and makes it work. Works great with my favorite silver necklace and silver flats. I'd wear my yellow bag to give it the prerequisite pop of color, and good to go!

I also think the black dress will look fab over denim too (clams OR skinnies). Do you have white denim? I can't remember. That's another way to go. (And I would go that way, if my white jeans fit me... I have a few more lbs to loose ...)

I think the dress will be cute on you Maya! But I see your reservations about wearing stirrups with them. I think that might be too much black; I'd rather see it with cropped leggings. But you won't know until you try!

I only have black solid leggings (with a lace trim), but I am thinking of replacing them. They're a bit beat up.

I do not have any white denim. It's a nice piece to have, but it always falls to the back on the list of my priorities. I would rather have white clams and lots of dresses.
