Black Esprit handbag

I'm looking for a black medium sized handbag for everyday use (or should I go for grey?) and I was wondering what you think about this one:

I'm terrible at picking handbags for myself (strange really, because on somebody else, I can recognize a great bag from miles away...). Is this one too classic, plain, boring...?

I'm the same way Inge. I always find myself questioning my taste in bags. I am utterly clueless about what makes bags good or not. It seems like anything goes to me.

That said, I like the bag you chose. It's versatile and simple without being boring. I am on a gray kick lately and I think it would be nice if you could find a gray one, though this is not based on anything other than my personal taste, but this one seems fine to me.

I like that bag--for a basic bag. Does it come in grey? Esprit can be very limited in their colors.

I have no trouble picking out bags I like if they are cheap (less than $50). But if I were ever going to purchase a designer bag--I would not feel very confident in my decision. I guess I figure that if I tire of a cheap bag after a season, I don't mind getting rid of it. I'd be really pi**ed if I bought a $300 bag and ended up hating it after one season.

I'm totally with you guys on the handbag thing (obviously, from all my posts).

I like the black bag, but grey could definitely work for you too. What type of work do you do for everyday? Are you looking for more of a work tote, is that it?

I like that bag and would go for it. I think it would go great with your new S&K coat. I like grey too, but would get black first if you already don't have it.

Inge, I really like the look of that bag. I agree with the others that if you don't have a black handbag, this would be great. I think grey would be a fun alternative. Let us know what you decide to do!

To answer your questions:

- I don't have a black handbag at the moment (the Esprit one is not available in grey by the way), so maybe it would be a good idea to do that first (although, influenced by YLF, I'm also drawn to grey this Winter;-)

- Nicole: You are right, it wouldn't be a disaster if I got bored with it after a while, since it's not really expensive.

- Ana: I mostly work from home as a freelance translator, editor and copywriter and I'm in the middle of starting up a business as a personal book shopper. I would use it on a daily basis for shopping trips, running errands, going out for lunch, meeting friends etc., and for the occasional client meeting. So I just need to fit in the usual stuff: wallet, keys, small umbrella, lipstick, tissues, a pen, diary, a book...

- Angie: No, I haven't bought it yet. I get the feeling that you think I could do better?-) I keep thinking I should get something a bit more fun and modern (although I have nothing against classics, on the contrary). What do you think? Any suggestions?-)

OK, I have to run now but will check in tonight. We're going to play tourist in our own country today and are going to visit 'het Atomium'. I haven't seen it yet, since it was renovated in 2003.

I do think you could sport a more fun and less strict looking handbag, Inge. I feel that’s more in line with your taste preferences. Does that make sense or am I batty? How about something more like this: (ignore the prices – the examples are for look only).

You're right Angie and definitely not batty at all;-)
Although I have to say that I'm often drawn to very minimalist and structured bags. (e.g. if I needed a clutch, I would be all over the Hobo International you posted recently http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....rchresults.)

I have two sides I guess, one is the 'simple lines and less adornment is more', and the other is the 'I love girly and ruffly stuff too'. Of course it's possible to combine those two as well, that's when it gets interesting. But I'm still learning there. Does that make sense?

And I'm rather clueless about handbags I'm afraid; I often wonder whether the ones I like are 'interestingly simple' or just 'matronly boring'.

Oh, and thank you for the suggestions!
I really like two and three, and I love the Botkier bag. I'm going to see if I can find something similar in a lower price category.

(Het Atomium really is amazing, and I'm still smiling about the 'kinderbol' - children's sphere. In one of the spheres an artist has installed a reproduction of the real Atomium: nine colourful smaller spheres in which they have put mattresses and pillows, and now school groups can book the sphere to spend the night there. A science trip and sleepover in one.)

ahem... I almost bought the hobo clutch for myself! I bought it for a friend’s birthday instead. It’s killer.

I like simple handbags with barely any hardware too. In fact all my bags are simple and textured – no outside pockets or ornaments. We have a similar handbag taste

The kinderbol sounds fabulous. I would have loved to experience that as a child!!

I saw a great Calvin Klein bag today (funny I can't remember the details, only that it was something with great texture and very simple and 300 euros;-), and a Melvin bag (or was it the Claudio Ferrici) in black patent leather, but with small handles. I wouldn't be able to carry it on my shoulder. Not sure about that.

I'll have to go back to that store when I have more time. The search continues...

Inge, I hear you. I wanted to chime in that I also have no clue about picking handbags. I'm drawn to minimalist handbags without bells and whistles, but I'm also afraid to pick something boring. Recently I made small progress and started paying attention to texture and shape. But I still feel mostly lost. Maybe I expect too much from one bag?

MK bags are usually fabulous, Ellen. If you have the budget, they are a good investment item. Try the Rack!

Good point Nicole, I hadn't even thought about that. And no, I wouldn't mind more than one colour as long as they are both/all dark shades. Well, that broadens my options even further;-)
