Oh, I forgot I was going to come back to this.. the other night while watching TV, a Macy's ad came on a bazillion times and it featured a gal in none other than a red and black outfit. So there!

I feel it is silhouettes/cuts of clothing that date a look more than a combining of colors. If combining a crayon box colored top with a dark bottom is dated, then I am dated. Even though I got all of these separates in this photo THIS SEASON (top, pants, shoes). (Coat is from eBay, a few seasons ago but I saw a bunch of coats with this cut in stores recently.)

Impossible for a color combo to be dated.

Makes absolutely no sense!

I think it is sad to think of all the In Style readers getting rid of red items.

Dated is when there is also a style associated with a particular color combo such as avocado and orange kitchens. But.. avocado and orange are a winning tropical color combo on the right person and in the right context.

I vote for color freedom and no judgement as to good and bad. I tell my students this all the time- there is no ugly color- it is all relative. I also believe there is no dated color or color combo.

BTW,When mixing colors, my students always dump on all of my favorite earth tones UNTIL they put a gorgeous mushroom next to an almost pure violet. Then they see the beauty of the mushroom.

Black sometimes needs strong color to balance it's weight. That will never date. It is just a color principle

Well bless you, Jean! HIIIIIIIIIIGH FIVE!

Jean nailed it. I love color theory.

I think it's just that it was SO BIG about 10 years ago (I remember wearing red jeans with a black tee a lot in college) that it can easily reference that. But you can easily modernize it.

Yah, I love black and red combinations...

I may wear them in a dated way, we will see, but the combination always cheers me up.
