Black and Coral 4/28/08

Here's my outfit from today. I bought this hilarious lady bug belt from J. Crew (where else?) yesterday, and it inspired my 2-color outfit. Yeah, it's a bit matchy-matchy, but I really wanted to limit it to 2 colors+gold jewelry.

The cardigan is black (I know, I don't wear black). I took a cue from Angie's "Closet Orphan" blog the other day, and I thought about why I didn't like it. It just bored me to death, I decided, but it's a great quality little cardigan, and the short sleeves are nice for this climate, so I couldn't bear to part with it during my closet clean out. I found this belt and it adds enough funkiness to the outfit that I enjoy wearing my cardi now. When I buy my gold flats, I may trade the black heels for those and add a gold bag.

It was chilly this morning, so I wore my favorite accessory ever--my coral silk/cashmere scarf:

Then when I take the scarf off--tada! The lady bug belt takes it's place as my accessory:

A close up of the belt. This is more representative of the actual colors--they're more coral and not hot pinky orange like in the first two shots:

You look fab as usual. I love the idea of short sleeve cardigan. I've been looking for a cream cardigan, but I think I might change my search over to a short sleeved one. I love that cardigans mask a lot of sins, and was worried about losing that benefit once it gets too warm to wear one.

I think I'd like to see more color in the shoes though. The belt makes that outfit so fun, that even *I* wouldn't mind flats with that skirt.

Ana, you look great! The outfit is adorable and the belt is super cute. You wear coral so well! I wish I could wear that color.

Thanks you guys!

The shoes are a bit snooze, but I didn't really have any better choices. Like I said, I'd really like to replace them with some gold flats. Saving my pennies--only 2 more weeks, and then I'm getting these:

Tanya, it's so interesting how colors look on different people! If I tried on any of the muted ice cream colors that look great on you, I'd look like a ghost.

Gorgeous, Ana! Love the bug! It’s fun and flirty and you are young enough to pull it off. I really like you in the black cardigan too. So glad you gave your orphan another chance. You look sensational in red-coral.

Btw I love those shoes you're planning to get, they look awesome! Do report on how comfy they are when you get them!

Beautiful outfit Ana, I think you wear black very well, but you're young and fun so you have time on your side to enjoy colors now.

I love the silhouette of that cardigan, Ana. I think you look adorable and your choice of color is great. I don't even mind the shoes. I actually think they're really cute.

Love the outfit, the skirt especially! I have been looking for an A-line denim skirt. I get the impression you like J. Crew. Is that where it's from? Everything looks really good on you.

Ana, that is a super cute outfit. I love the look of layered colors like that. And I love the scarf.

Thanks for all the replies and compliments, everyone!

Shannon, I do love J. Crew, it's true, but the skirt is actually from Banana Republic. It's this one:

I had to have it altered because my best length is right above the knees, so I pretty much get everything altered to that length.

No way! When I was looking for an A-line denim skirt a while back, my friend told me about this one. When I saw it on the website I thought it was awful, so I didn't buy it. You look better in it than that model does!!!! Now I want it! The only size left is mine and it's on sale! Hmmmm........what to do? I already bought a skirt from Anthropologie that was supposed to be A-line but doesn't look like it. I like it, but it's 2X's more money than this Banana skirt right now. Dilemmas!!

Thanks for the compliment, Shannon! I think you should go for the denim A-line from BR, especially if it's on sale. They are one of only a few A-line skirts in denim I've been able to find this season, and it's a great medium dark color that is very flattering and goes with everything. I haven't had any issues with color transfer either--really nice quality.

Having it altered may have something to do with how it looks on me vs. the model. When I bought it, it was just too long for me and made me look frumpy. I took about 4" off the bottom, and it made all the difference in the world for me. I had BR do it and it only cost $10.00, which is a good deal around here. Also, in real life, I found that it is much more A-line than on the model. I think it's because she has her arms down and it's pushing the skirt down so it's not flared as much. Plus, a denim skirt can be worn into the fall with boots and things, so you'd probably get a lot of use out of it. I wear mine at least 1-2 times a week.

If you don't like it, you can always return it to a BR store so you don't have to pay return shipping.

Ana, this outfit is superb. The black and coral together are super duper. That cardi should not be an orphan no more :-)
Nothing wrong with the shoes at all; I might even like them better than gold ones with that outfit. (I do like the gold shoes a lot, just not sure whether they'd be the better choice with that particular outfit. But you might convince me once you have that all on together.)
Inspiring!

Thanks, Antje! I'll post a picture with the gold shoes when I get them.

Oh, and the ladybug belt is adorable. I love little playful touches like this in an outfit.

Posted 1 year ago

Me too, Antje! I think maybe you and I have a similar style. I like to think of myself as "whimsical chic" (not my term, I got it in a book, but I thought it was fitting). Classic, but still funky.

Posted 1 year ago

Yeah. I actually prefer "playful" and "funky" over "whimsical" as a term, although I think we mean the same thing. Funny what we attach to words. Recently I was glasses shopping, and they had a pair in a great color and shape, but the temples had this cut-out pattern of little trees and houses. It reminded me of a fairy tale book. I called it "whimsical" and soundly rejected it. Somehow that word does not feel like "me" at all. But the ladybug belt, now that could be in my closet, too! Enjoy :-)

Posted 1 year ago

Antje, I agree with you on use of those words. When I saw your outfits I thought "fun" and "funky". When somebody says "whimsical" I think of SJP in "Sex and the City".

Posted 1 year ago

You lot are hilarious.

I’d describe Antje’s style as peppy, playful, funky, fun…..AND sophisticated. This is a good thing.

(You may have noticed that I never use the word “sexy”. I prefer the word “alluring”. To your point about liking and not liking words!)

Posted 1 year ago

I think of whimsical as kind of flighty whereas funky connotes a certain level of groundedness. I think you guys are fun and funky and stylish too. Ana, I love the ladybug and it looks so great because you pulled the rest of the outfit together so well.

Posted 1 year ago

Angie, that's interesting re: sexy vs. alluring. I personally use the word "sexy" and like it as a descriptor of the occasional piece of clothing or outfit. To me it sounds strong and confident. Somehow "alluring" sounds to me as if I wanted to pretend otherwise, like I put on something that I think is sexy but try to be super subtle about it. I guess I like the obvious more than the suggested...
Mind you that this is not to say I like what I'd call "slutty" outfits ;-)
I do hope that if I've used the word on this forum before (I might well have), I haven't offended anyone!

Posted 1 year ago

I hear you Antje and you make a good point. There is definitely something more "implied" about the word "alluring", but just as confident in my opinion. I enjoy both obvious and subtle style traits. It’s a matter of preference I suppose. Horses for courses! And you couldn’t offend anyone if you tried :0 )
