Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Better skirt for me?

A while back I started this topic and got lots of good advice:
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....replies=14
(I've moved my pictures to Photobucket to get them password-protected - by the way, could someone let me know if that is indeed working, i.e. do you have to type in the password before you can view my pictures? I can access them directly but that's presumably because it's my own account?)

I then ordered the two Boden skirts and the first one arrived yesterday, so now I'd love to hear your opinions of course.

As a reminder, first the denim 'pencil' skirt that wasn't working for my body type (straightish hourglass) from the previous post:
http://i278.photobucket.com/al.....d04b7b.jpg

And this is the navy Hawaian floral from Boden (sorry about the 'crooked' angle and the poor quality, no time to redo them at the moment)
http://i278.photobucket.com/al.....F2386b.jpg

The colour looks a bit washed out in the first picture due to the flash, but no flash was too dark (got to work on my photo skills!), the navy is actually darker:

So what do you all think (fit, length...)?

By the way: don't mind the shoes, I'm working on more open vamp options.

Inge, I did not need to enter a password, but I couldn't see you whole album--just the individual photo.

You look fantastic in those skirts--I love the both. As a matter of fact, if you were standing outside doing some fun activity, maybe holding a dog's leash, or laughing with some handsome man--I'd think you were a Boden model.
:)

GRIN, you crack me up Nicole!-)
And thanks, that's a very nice compliment. It's good to get some confirmation, because as far as skirts are concerned I just don't see it at the moment.
But what do you mean with 'both skirts' Nicole, it's actually the same skirt twice (unless you mean the floral one and the denim one, which was vetoed last time)?

Posted 1 year ago

Inge I could also see the photos without password, but only individual ones.
The Boden skirt is perfect in every way, it's beautiful on you.
As for the denim one, the same comment as last time: I think it needs to taper more towards the knee.

Posted 1 year ago

Love the Boden skirt! It's nicer because it flares outward in an A-line shape, which is very flattering on most body types. The denim one neither tapers inwards like a true pencil skirt, or flares out, it just hangs straight, which is why it isn't that flattering on you and looks a bit schlumpy. Plus, I think it might be a tad too long. You could have it altered if you wanted to make it taper more, and maybe take a tiny bit of length off. The length of the Boden skirt is perfect for you, I think.

I think I may have caused a bit of confusion here: the denim one is not a keeper, I just posted it again because I took down the Flickr pictures of my previous post. (so the denim one is the 'bad example', I just thought it would be handy if you guys could compare the cut with this new A-line skirt from Boden). Sorry about that.

So I 'just' need your opinion on the floral one;-)
And so far so good it appears.

Posted 1 year ago

it looks great on you! definitely a keeper.
I have been wanting to order the exact same one for a while..just not sure about european sizes.
oh btw your password isnt working..you probably need to link us to the album. The links above are directly for the photos which could possibly be why it didnt ask for a password.

Thanks Mirah!
There's a conversion table on the website, maybe that helps?
http://www.bodenusa.com/yourquest/w_size.asp
And if you click on 'garment measures' you get lots of info, so maybe you can compare it with a skirt you have and fits well?

I wouldn't wait too long with placing an order though, some sizes are almost sold out.

About the password: yes I think that might be it, my album is password-protected, but apparently that's not the case with direct links. I'll keep that in mind.

Looks perfect, Inge. Definetly a keeper. You can wear this with so much.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I do not care for denim skirts in general. I have been wondering why that is, but now perhaps Ana has given me the reason! It may be only because most denim skirts just hang straight, as Ana says.

I also like the skirt. Also, love the way you buttoned the cardi - the emphasis on your waist makes you look more hourglass-y.

I didn't have to enter a password for the individual photo but when I tried to view the album I needed the password. I think the idea is that random people can't view your photos - and they would have to guess the entire URL in order to view the individual ones, which is unlikely. That's how my photobucket album works also. If you want to post the password-required version, I think you need the "Share URL" instead of the "Direct Link".

Inge,

I really like the Boden skirt! I think it hangs very well and is definitely one to keep. I like the raspberry top with it too! Good purchase!

I love the Boden skirt too. Shiny, I have a hard time with denim skirts too. I've been trying to be patient and just let the right one come along. I think I may have found one but I'm not sure about the sizing so I'll be starting a thread here soon for input from all of you.

Posted 1 year ago

Thanks for the tip Ola.That confirms what Mirah was saying.
Boden seems to work great for me so far (bought the cardi there as well).

And Shiny, you certainly have a point there. Before finding YLF I didn't realise that not many women can wear the 'just straight down' skirts, and unfortunately there's loads of straight denim skirts out there.
Have you tried something like the BR skirt some of the other ladies have?
http://www.bananarepublic.com/.....pid=547463
Or this, a darker wash (I ordered it together with the floral skirt and can't wait for it to arrive, I'm SO keeping my fingers crossed that it will be as flattering as my new navy Hawaiian;-)

I do love denim because it's so versatile: you can easily dress it up or down, it doesn't wrinkle, you can wear it all year long etc.
It's probably just like with all other clothes: you have to keep looking until you find the perfect cut and fit for you.

Your new Hawaiin skirt looks great and the Boden skirt on the link is cute too.
I think you all have pointed out something that I never noticed before about denim skirts. They are very stiff if they are heavy gauge denim and maybe the lighter weight denim would be more flattering.
The heavy one that I got from NAU I put aside to wear in the winter with boots not realizing that if it wasn't so stiff I might like it in the summer.

Inge, I agree with everyone else that the skirt looks great!

Also, as someone with very muscular legs who would KILL for calves like yours, I feel like I have to make one recommendation: have you tried any above-the-knee skirts? My opinion is that if you've got it, flaunt it. Something a little shorter may be worth a try. :)

I also think the top looks perfect with the skirt--I like the colors together and the length of the top is great.

Now to find a pair of shoes and you'll be all set!

Love the Boden floral skirt. Love the sweater too; where did you find that? The ruffles down the front are adorable.

Posted 1 year ago

Thanks Nancy. I got the cardigan at Boden as well, it's the 'Chic Ruffle Cardigan in navy (4 other colours available), and I love it: it's quite a thin fabric, perfect for summer, feels great against your skin, the fit is excellent and the ruffles do give it just that little extra.

Aaaah Steph, and here I am wishing that I had the gorgeous muscular and trim, shapely legs/calves lots of you ladies have here! (funny isn't it how at one point or another we all want exactly what we haven't got).

I really appreciate the suggestion Steph, thanks, but unfortunately above the knee is not all that flattering on me anymore (some 5, 6 years ago I still could)... It's a combination of aging and putting on a few pounds I think (still hoping to firm up a bit again with more regular exercise, but I'm not holding my breath;-).

Experience has taught me that I now look best in skirts and dresses on the knee or just below (in winter with boots and tights I can go up a bit). And I seem to remember Angie confirming in my previous skirt post that with my height and legs, this is the best length for me anyway. So I'll just have to flaunt what I've got;-)

Posted 1 year ago

Thanks again everybody for all your comments (about the top half as well, good to know that I got the length and fit there right as well).

I'm so happy to have found a skirt that works so well. It does make a difference doesn't it, when you're wearing something you feel great in AND you know it genuinely looks good.

It's pouring here today, so no skirt today, but I'm sure I'll have lots of opportunity to wear it.

Inge, sorry for the confusion on my post about both skirts. I thought you bought two very similar skirts. I actually almost comented on them looking a lot alike, but decided it really wasn't my business if you wanted two of the same skirt. I'm such a dork.

Posted 1 year ago

LOL! Don't worry about it Nicole. I'm actually so glad with the skirt that duplicating it has crossed my mind, but I think I'm going to look for similar A-line skirts in different colours and prints instead. (a beautiful dress is high on my list too)

And you've still got me smiling about your Boden model remark: next time I want to post a picture here, I'll have to contain myself from dashing over to the park across the street, grabbing an unsuspecting dog and asking its flabbergasted owner to take my picture:-)

Posted 1 year ago

Ha! You look fab in your new Boden skirt Inge. Perfect! You have a lot to flaunt and I can’t wait to see more. Well done.

Posted 1 year ago

Thanks Angie, glad to hear you approve too. This has definitely encouraged me to try and add more skirts (and dresses) to my wardrobe. To be continued for sure...

Posted 1 year ago

Definitely! Especially in Autumn and Winter with boots. And you look a lot like how I pictured you, Inge! So pretty and I LOVE the short hair (from one pixie-head to another).

Posted 1 year ago

Wow! That's quite a compliment Angie, thank you! And it's funny isn't it how some people are exactly as you had pictured them and others completely the opposite.
I'm imagining you (maybe I should put this in the Who's Who thread;-) as being very elegant, modern and quite spunky at the same time, with a bit of Dutch down to earthness and a British sense of humour (love their dry wit!) thrown into the mix - a winning combination.

Posted 1 year ago

*blushing* and still *blushing*. I am wildly humbled by your imagination, Inge!!!

Posted 1 year ago

Well I've just seen the Paris pictures and as far as looks are concerned I was quite right I think;-)

You're so stylish Angie and funky at the same time. And now its my turn to say it (and mean it too!) LOVE your hair, it suits you perfectly and the glasses are the finishing touch.

That's what I really like and admire: it's not just about putting on the right clothes and picking the right accessories, but doing it an a way that expresses your personality. You own that look Angie!

Posted 1 year ago

Oh Inge. Such gracious words you share. Thank you so much. I’m humbled.

I look best with short hair. It was a little longer about 6 months ago (like the illustration on my site), but then hubby said “ I miss seeing your ears”, so that was my sign to go ultra short again. I know that you can relate to how easy it is to have super short hair!
