Best skirt length ?

I have an old heavy wool skirt in my closet that I consider too long. I am planning to let a tailor shorten it. What skirt length do you consider most versatile and flattering for a straight winter wool skirt in tweed, above the knee, on the knee, below the knee ?

Anna, I think the most universally flattering length is right at knee length, not longer or shorter. This length works for both pencil skirts and A-line.

I'm 5'8" and never wear anything longer than knee length.

EDIT: I DO wear shorter skirts in fall and winter and only with opaque tights.

Without seeing a picture of it on you, my general answer is slightly above to at the knee length because I find that length most versatile with hosiery and shoes as well as being the most universally flattering length.

I agree just at the knee, but with midis making a comeback and it being winter it could potentially work just below knee with boots? Visuals would help of course.

Without seeing it on you, I'd say straight on the kneecap.

I like mine to hit a the bottom of my kneecap (mostly because I think I have knobby knees, and my legs are long enough that more length isn't doing much damage).

For me, it is oh-so-slightly above the knee. I think that it does depend on the individual. If you are unsure, either go longer first or leave a big hem to turn back down if you change your mind.

I have a hard time figuring out how I like something until I use it a few times

I usually find just at the knee or a hair above the knee to be the most consistently fool-proof length for me.

It may also depend on your height and if you are planning to wear the skirt with tights, with boots, etc.

Thank you all for the replies thus far! I have camera trouble at the moment or I would have added a picture. Seems like right on the knee might be a suitable option. That or leaving it as is and see if I can manage a way to style it. I do not quite know how to avoid making a heavy wool tweed midi look dowdy. I bought this skirt some 30 years ago at a sale. It was the first really expensive piece of clothing I had ever owned. At that time I was young enough that nothing really looked too dowdy. Will add a picture when I can.

Hi Anna! I agree with the others, a photo would really help. If you need some help balancing the ratio of your calf length to thigh length, I found this article helpful: http://www.extrapetite.com/201.....ength.html

But, as the others have said, the calf : thigh ratio isn't everything. You'll also want to take things like body shape into consideration ... and that's where a photo might help.
