I am intrigued by this idea for my black trench. This coat is not the one I have, but the material and length are similar, and more specifically, the belt is practically the same.

I love everything about it except that stupid belt. Obviously I cannot tie it in a perfect little bow like they show in the picture. Instead I end up tying it in a gigantic lumpy knot. Over time, this has caused to become wrinkeled, twisted, and kinked. It is also a very slippery belt and constantly slides out of the belt loops if I drape it on the back of my chair or carry it in my hands. It is really only a matter of time before I lose it (I almost did the other day). I would MUCH prefer a belt that buckles.

Sooo...if I wanted to swap the belt out, what should the new belt look like? I'm not going to be able to match the sateen of the coat perfectly. Will black patent look weird? I don't want it to be obvious that the belt and coat are unrelated.
