Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

b-day gift for sister, MOTG/SASHM

my sister is turning 29 on july 4th (yes, i'm really late, but the party was last minute anyway), and i'd love to gift her with a few affordable, practical pieces.

she has two small kids (ages 4 & 2), and tends to dress very low-maintenance, with no jewelry, and doesn't like/want to wear skirts/dresses (don't have extra time to shave sometimes!)

in the past, i've given her silver ATL ballet flats and cute jersey tops to wear with jeans. sadly, she thought the shoes were too 'special' to wear outside, and didn't wear them as much. her 4 y/o daughter however, loved them, lol.

my dear sister is ~5'7", very slim (size 2), rectangle/slight hourglass, with a a *little* belly bulge. i can only hope to look like that when i have kids...or maybe, look like that at all! j/k

i'd love to give her something like the following, but don't know how much mileage they will get (ie, walking everywhere, going to the playground, transitioning to fall, etc...). any MOTG/SAHM, please shout out your gift ideas!

ps: i LOVE snake/animal print shoes (and the fact you can wear simple solids and still pack some punch), but i don't know if my sister will wear them enough to make it worth it. are me too flats ok, or are clarks/naturalizer better? what colors can go the 4-season distance (or almost)?

Cyan, you are a sweet sister for thinking of your sister's needs and treating her. As a former SAHM with little boys, I thnk you have made great choices. The NYDJ capri will be comfortable and practical as will the knit top, although it will need a cami.
As comfortable as MeToo shoes are for walking, I'd suggest an athletic ballet shoe. In her situation she will actually need to be able to run in her shoes. Something like Clarks Privos or any athletic Mary jane would serve her well on a daily basis. As for color, you might pick a color close to her hair color. On the Endless site there are some that are black, brown, grey, beige as well as colors. I can't seem to get a link to work, but I clicked on "athletic" and then on "walking". Scroll through and click on a flat. At the bottom will be many more that were viewed by others viewing the shoe you clicked on. Although you can't see all the colors avalable, you can see the price. Good luck!

I'd give the top a miss it says dry clean only on the information- not good with kids x

good one, loulou! phew...

Cyan glad i could help. I work with kids and i've had to turn away from sooooo many gorgeous clothes because they're dry clean only, it's the 1st thing i look for now before even trying on!

Hmm, I second Joy's suggestion on Privos and Clarks. If she treated the silver flats as "special", chances are that Me Toos will have a similar fate. Privos are definitely playground-worthy.
I like the top - perhaps you can find something similar that is machine washable? Denim clams is probably the most used summer item for a MOTG, at least for me.
Would she like a cross-body bag? Or maybe a jersey dress/tunic?

what do you think of these privos? maybe a metallic or hair color match would be the most versatile?

1) pewter--though i love the red ones ;-)

2) another pewter

3) brown (my sister has brown/chestnut hair color)

I like the capris a lot. My kids are a couple of years older than your sisters, but even with the passage of extra time, I'm still a bit skittish about wearing anything that reminds me of maternity wear. I'm not sure if that's something your sister would be concerned about at all :)

The Privos look nice too. I'd pick the color that would coordinate with what she's already got in her closet..

marianne, she has a cross-body bag already, and doesn't really wear tunic/dresses. thanks for the shoe tips!

astanton, i think she has some non-maternity clothe by now ;-) she tends to wear cool colors, some on the brighter side than others. that's why maybe a pewter cover her bases more than brown...but i don't know, lol.

will capri cuffs (like in the dark denim capris), visually shorten her legs? the black looks more streamlined, but the denim looks a little spunky and casual, fitting with her overall style.

cyan--I just meant that top you linked to above kind of reminded me of a maternity top--a very pretty one--but still, anything that's snug around the breasts and looser underneath tends to give me that impression. Admittedly, I'm more sensitive about that than some others. I remember a time when my co-workers asked if I was pregnant again, since I was wearing a similar top, lol :)

Pregnant women are beautiful, but when a woman's back to her non-pregnant shape, she might like to show that off :)

One thing I've enjoyed as a mom is makeup that's quick and easy to apply, such as eye shadow that you can apply with a finger. Philosophy has a really nice line of shadows like this.

Best of luck!

Sorry, I just saw you mentioned about the dresses. I really like the first privos, either in pewter or red.

To see the top in action IRL, here are a few pictures of this top on some of us:
