Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Ask Angie: Thumbs up or down for this look (maternity)

Angie, I recently came across this look:

which involves a belly band over a top. My first reaction is that this is not a good look (too contrived), but the practicality of it intrigues me. So what's your opinion on the idea? If it can work what rules might be involved? In particular, should one stick with black on black or white on white or could you mix colors? Thanks.

Oh Patience, if Coco created maternity wear today - this would be it. A BIG thumbs up from me. If I were pregnant like you, THIS is what I would wear with bootcuts or straight legs and my Chanel-esque jacket.

I think the tonal effect is crucial. A colour-blocked effect will ruin the look.

Oooh, exciting that this gets such a positive response from you. There is just not anything in the US that looks like this, but the look is definitely growing on me. It seems like such a practical solution for tops that get too short in the last trimester.

I suspected that tonal was the way to go, but the same site has colorblocked looks as well.

So if I had to pick between black and white, I'm guessing you'd say white?

Patience, I love that look! I hope you get one and try it. I had a top very similar from Express that was made that way. It's almost like a cumberbund.
I'm not as big of a fan of the colorblock look - to me it looks like you're wearing a band outside your top instead of it looking like a complete look that is on purpose.

I was thinking exactly the same thing as Angie: I'd wear this in a hearbeat if I were pregnant. FAN-TAS-TIC!! So elegant and funky!! (I'd stick with one colour too)

I vote black;-)

Great eye for catching on to this style Patience. I love how you show your cute baby belly. In the old days when I was pregnant it was all about ruffles and gathers covering it all up. I just love this new way of enhancing the baby.

Hmmm, if I went for black, would the rhinestone "Due in December" be too much bling for the belly band? (It does also come in plain.)

I think this look is great and would personally opt for the plain black option.

However in another month I would have a t shirt printed which read, "Due in December, yes I'm excited, no I have no signs yet, I don't care if it is a boy or girl so long as it's healthy!"

Oooh, I really like it! When I opened up the link, I hoped I wasn't off-track by liking it, and so I'm glad to read the comments that everyone else does too. ;)

Will you wear it as pictured, with the button down? So pretty.

I love the look Patience. I would go with plain black, myself.

I like the look as well and it does seem pratical, which is definitely a plus. I like the black shirt and black band the best.

Bumping to get Angie's opinion on color too.

RoseandJoan, you are cracking me up. My daughter was 2 weeks past the due date and boy was that a two weeks dealing with people. It's starting already. ;p
