Ask Angie: Shoulders and lapels

Is there a rule of thumb for how the size of lapels a person can wear depends on their shoulder line? I guess it seems to me that smaller shoulder lines will wear wider lapels better and vice versa.

The reason I ask this is because the question came up when I was trying my NAS vest:

I love the vest and it's a keeper but for future reference it would be useful to know the answer. Right now I have to wear it open and I'm wondering if the "lapels" as shown in the picture sitting below my broader shoulders make the style fall short of killer on me. Of course, it could also be that no matter what I just feel wide right now anyway.

Thanks!

Thanks.

I don’t mean to sound obtuse Patience, but “generally” your instincts are right.
But the length of one’s neck and bust size also play a role. I am very weary “to box” people wrt lapel size. There are too many exceptions to the rule.

Point taken, Angie. Maybe the better question is-- what are *my* best collars/lapels? This is an area I struggle with in pregnancy and post partum because I go from a 32C to a 34D and eventually back again. After being used to fitting to a 32C, it's a big adjustment for me and my instincts work less well. I'm thinking that at 32C, I can mostly get away with the lapels of the vest-- at least this is what my extincts tell me.
