Ask Angie: higher rise jeans?

Hi Angie,
I've been in and out of maternity clothes for the past few years and had little experience with jean shopping. Now it's time for a new pair. I can actually wait until fall but the other day I tried a few low rise pairs at Macy's just for reference (7's and joe's) and it was frustrating. I have the same problem as what Shiny mentioned in a different thread - pants in general seem to be either too baggy in the hips/butt or too tight in the waist/rise. I am fairly tall and slim, probably rectangle. Would you recommend looking for a higher rise? Are there any particular kinds that should work better?
Thanks!

Just wanted to say that as one who has also been in and out of maternity clothes I am looking forward to high rise jeans (I am still wearing maternity jeans at the moment) as what really appeals to me is that I imagine they do a much better job of holding the tummy in with none of that "muffin top" effect.
Mind you I tried a pair on the other day and although just at the moment it is the waist area that I am bigger in I still had the same problem I used to have (with a smaller waist) with jeans, that is, gaping at the back.

Anne - the solution is to alter your jeans. Back gaping is a common challenge.

Marlene, try NYDJ's and the Soho in longs.

Thanks... I always thought NYDJs are sort of matronly. I don't have a tummy problem, it's more that low rise jeans I tried make my butt look non-existent and me sort of top heavy/manly. I was just wondering if higher rise would help this issue.

Marianne, in that case case I'd try jeans with mid-rise and back flap-pockets.

Have you tried BR jeans? Try them all - urban, classic and wide-legs.

Thanks Angie, I will try BR. I haven't tried their jeans in 2 years or so.

Tanya, now that you mention it I always steered away from jeans with flap pockets. Maybe I should give them a chance, because cargo pants usually work pretty well.

I don't like flap pockets even though that's the standard recommendation for people with flat butts. I don't like them because often the flap material curls, it also makes weird lumps under tops, and often these pockets are positioned too low making the butt look droopy.

Marianne, give Citizens jeans a shot. They fit me the best. I like their Huttons (has a slight flare) because they are higher-rise (hit just below the belly button on me). The Ambers are bootcut and sit a little lower than that, but not TOO low. Pocket placement is perfect. When you have a flat or small butt, pocket size and placement makes ALL the difference in the world.

J Brand was another brand I had some luck with. Since you're tall they may be ideal for you.

Thanks again, Shiny! I will check them out.

Sounds like higher rise is the solution. Thanks everyone, I'm so glad I found this site. It completely changed my shopping ways!
