Ask Angie: have you changed your tune on skinnies?

Angie,
I have been following what I thought was your advice re skinnies on my figure - ie only with boots and tunics. I notice you have been approving of the banded top look on Sarah and Loulou, who are both at least as "pear" like as I am. My eye really hasn't adjusted to this look and I am a bit confused

No change of tune.

You have straightened out, Anne. Sarah had straightened out too. AND banded tops are voluminous which helps balance out the top with the lower part of the body.

Actually, with Loulou we preferred the bootcuts with her banded tops, as opposed to skinnies. Hope that makes sense.

So banded tops (and not wearing only boots with skinnies) might be okay?

I know I have straightened out - I often feel like a rectangle just with a big bottom! I don't know whether this look would be good on me given my short legs.

I didn't do very well when I bought my skinnies. I thought they would "grow" so I bought tight ones, and still have muffin top. And they are very low rise ( I haven't seen any skinnies in Aus that aren't, and are a reasonable price) and make me feel apple-y.

Anne i promise i would never leave the house with the skinnies without a longer top- san and sarbear thought it might be a good look (don't think they realised how pear shaped my hips are)
I much prefer my banded top with the bootcuts it looks more balanced somehow x

Loulou, I hope you didn't mind my using you as an example. I can certainly see banded tops with bootcuts on you (and I didn't comment on your thread, but I did like that grey top).

Anne, my body shape has definitely changed. I'm more hourglass than pear now I think. But even then, I've always been willing to try new things. I still like bootcut and even some wide leg pants on me, but I think skinnies work with a voluminous top. It's just a trial and error thing for me. I think you look great in bootcut.

There you go, Anne! Now you’ve heard from the lovely lasses themselves and our thought processes are the same. (Thanks Loulou and Sarah).

You’d look fab in a banded top and with boots over skinnies. You are definitely changing shape. A very fab shape! I can't believe your body had three children. You lucky lass.

I hope you find a pair of skinnies with a higher rise. Perhaps Tam or Imogen can help you out with that?

I'm struggling with this too. I ordered the Boden clams, which really hug my legs, similar to a skinny cut. I definitely have big thighs, and don't look good in the clams without a longer tunic. I'm having a hard time finding tunics that are long enough, yet still cool for summer. I am considering returning the Bodens and looking for more of a walk short, but I do like the look of the denim Bodens. I guess I'll just have to keep searching for th right length tunics!

Tarzy have you tried dresses?
I've had better luck with short dresses over skinnies they come up a bit longer than tunics and here in the uk are easier to find.

I'm not much help I'm afraid. I had no luck with high-rise skinnies here in Aus. Even in US the pairs I bought weren't particularly high rise but fit so well everywhere else. I'm thinking online would be the best bet. I'm tempted to try out the black UO ones Shiny posted about as they are easy on the $$$. My current black skinnies are falling off me and not looking too skinny at all so I just haven't been wearing them.

I am still in love with the high-waisted black cotton pants I got at Portmans a few months ago. I have gotten so much wear out of them, although they are getting a bit cold in winter now. I hope more of this style comes out for Spring! Otherwise I am going to kick myself that I didn't duplicate them!!!

It was quite warm and I wore this outfit to walk my daughter home from school. The cardi looks a bit boxy but it wasn't really.

While I had to wear the boots for comfort on the 45 min round trip, I did think that the outfit would have looked lighter without boots with the skinnies. But are you still saying that I should never wear skinnies without boots?

Anne, I love your tunic top! (And my gosh, you look SO lean and tall.)

I don't have the Angie expertise, but I think you should try out the skinnnies without boots and maybe post a picture here. The YLF crowd, Angie included, encouraged me to wear mine more often, and I certainly have larger hips and thighs than you do, and am a great deal wider than you overall.

anne, just wanted to chime in that i love the outfit you just posted! it sounds like angie's encouraging you to try them without boots, which i'm sure will look great, but i just wanted to say you really look fab in this outfit!

That's a great length tunic on you Anne. I'd love to see more outfits with skinnies outside the boots! I think you do need to play with proportion a bit. The other day I saw a petite girl wearing a very long tunic and very tight skinnies. Unfortunately the combo made her look like she had a long torso and stumpy legs, because of where the tunic cut off on her and the tightness of the skinnies.
