Ask Angie: do we call this a tee shirt?

Hi Angie and everyone,

Just a quick question. Would you call this style of top a tee shirt? I have quite a few of them, and that's what I've been calling them, for lack of a better term. They don't have the typical tee shirt shape. Also, do you call these cap sleeves, or is the top sleeveless? There are no actual sleeves sewn on, but they cover the top of my shoulder.

I think of those as jersey/knit tops. They're not proper tees to me.

Diagonal short sleeved/wide shouldered jersey/knit top would be more accurate to me. I love these, too. Much more dressier than a simple tee.

I think of it as a knit top versus a tee. More refined than a tee in my book.

What Diana said, and it's a borderline tee. As a fashion buyer writing an order for the style, I'd have described it as a fitted knitted jersey top with grown on sleeves and slash neck.

Thanks guys. "Borderline tee" and "grown-on sleeves" are now a part of my vocabulary!

Angie, these are the tees that occasionally pull across my chest, because they are made of stretchy fabric. If I stand perfectly still in front of the mirror and pull the slash neck straight, there are no boob lines. But of course as soon as I move, the neck doesn't stay in a straight line across my chest. It relaxes into a nice folded v-shape and the sleeves slide up a little, exposing more shoulder. It's a flattering effect -- EXCEPT the bust then pulls a little. If I wear it a size up, it's loose enough that it doesn't pull, but it doesn't look right. It's not the kind of top that looks good if you're swimming in it.

I keep buying these anyway because they are the perfect (borderline) tee shirt for a rectangle -- they make me look like I have a waist! And they are very comfy. And can be dressed up or down.
