Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Ask Angie: colored tights?

How do you feel about all of the colored tights that are coming out this season? I am intrigued. I think you were formally not crazy about them them. I wonder if that has shifted?

No change of heart yet, Jean. Still don't think they work that well unless you're a teeny bopper or in your early 20’s. Generally, just don’t think it looks good. Quite juvenile. But that being said, you know I have an open fashion mind. If anyone could make coloured tights look stylish it would be arty, theatrical and creative you!

I have bright pink tights, which I know the YLF community will hate, so I don't post them :) But I like them and wear them happily. In the first place, I do not wear tights at all in summer, so the only time they come out is in the fall or winter, when I'm exclusively in boots. So the way I usually wear them involves a shorter skirt and tall boots, so the tights just peek out in between.

You are the right age to wear pink tights, Maya!

You said early 20's Angie. I'm mid-20's :p I'll try to get as much use out of them as I can before I hit 28!

I like 'em, and as I'm older than Maya, I'm probably pushing the boundaries of acceptable style here ;) I only wear muted shades though, favourites being teal, purple, navy and forest green. I'll wear them with a black skirt or dress, so it's just a hint of colour.

Like Ele I'm drawn to the more muted shades that would tone with your outfit rather than shout. I like the idea of eggplant, olive, steel blue or even cream after seeing this post

I would wear the tights with my knee high chocolate brown boots or peep to shoes if feeling brave.

Maya I would love to see you in your pink tights.

I just turned 33 but I am considering colored tights this winter. I would only wear darker, muted shades like a deep eggplant and probably would combine them with high boots. I don't want to look juvenile though. I'd just like a way to keep wearing my dresses in cooler weather.

I wish I could get away with bright tights but I tried on a pair last winter and finally understood why Angie recommends them for the under-30 crowd. I looked silly in them. That said, I already have black, charcoal and browns for this winter and will be looking for more shades like that in different textures for under boots with my dresses and skirts.

I like them, but the only real color I dare to wear is very dark, deep eggplant.

Interesting. We had virtually the same conversation last season! Shiny has dark burgundy boots that she wears with dark burgundy tights/hose. The combination looks terrific. Sophisticated, subtle, polished, age appropriate and fun. Perfect for our Shiny who is in her mid 40’s, or thereabouts.

Antje posted an outfit and wore subtle, deep red & black diamond checked hose with a tailored look. It worked for Antje’s funky style. It was borderline, but even I felt it worked because Antje actually pulls off things like that, AND it was a fairly sophistocated outfit. Antje is over 40. Do you remember those outfits Maya, Jean and Tanya?

I guess what I am trying to say in that subtle, dark rich coloured hose after a certain age can look great. And I think hose looks better than tights. It’s the “too young” juvenile styles in bright colours that I feel don’t work when you’re older. Too costume like. I hope that makes sense.

The concept also works really well if you’re wearing coloured boots. Dark green hose will look fantastic with dark green boots or pumps. I hope I don’t sound obtuse.

Maya and Ele, you are plenty young to sport whatever looks you want.

I get it, (I think). I would never think of wearing bright tights but subtle could be really interesting. I love the idea of deep turquoise with chocolate suede pumps. (not that I have either. I do not want to look like my students even though some of them are very inspiring and fashionable.

I'm another closet coloured tights wearer. I have a dark blue pair, and a maroon pair I've been wearing all winter. I just recently bought a dark purple pair too. Like Ele, I like pairing them with an otherwise mostly black ensemble to lighten the look up a bit.

I've mainly worn them with boots, rather than ballet flats. I wonder if having a smaller amount of tight on show makes them look less larey?? Hope so, because I'm def. not in the 20s age bracket anymore - ooops!!

As an aside I remember wearing a *fluro pink* dress and matching tights to my year 10 formal back in the 90s. Now those were coloured!!!!
