Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Ask Angie: Blue denim and grey hair?

Dear Angie,
What do you think about grey hair and light or dark blue jeans? I gave away all but my black jeans a while ago, partly because of a change in shape and partly because I lost confidence in my ability to get away with them, now that I have pewter-coloured hair (short). I'm 54, 5'3", a pretty pear and fairly plump (62kg or about 138lb, mostly below the waist). I don't want to look like a scary old lady trying to look young. On the other hand, I kind of miss the convenience ... My denim jacket still looks OK, I think - tho' not worn with jeans. I'd be fine with "stick to black trousers" guidance.

I'm not Angie but i'm sure she'd say there is no reason why you shouldn't wear jeans. I'd stick to dark wash denim and bootcuts make sure they are ppl and away you go. I'd avoid wearing the jeans with the denim jacket post piccies if you like and we can offer more detailed guidance x
Ps Angie is away till 19th but sure she will chime in then

Robyn, You posted some pics or you wearing jeans a few months ago and they looked fine! My Mum is nearly 10 years older than you and still wearing them, not at all appropriately. (and 5"3 and 62kg is hardly plump)!

My mum is still wearing jeans in her sixties.

She sticks to dark wash styles with no faded areas or distressing. She also tries to stick to a more tailored jean shape.

I hope this helps

Absolutely, why not denim? I hope never to give it up!

Robyn, jeans are no longer a "young" trend- they're for everyone. In a dark wash, well-fitting pair, you will look stylish and not at all "old lady trying to look young". I think so many times we prematurely age ourselves out of fear of "trying to look young". Angie has some wonderful posts on age-appropriate clothes and dressing for pear shapes. We still get to have fun with clothes, even if we're over 50!

Maybe you just needed some new jeans. I recently visited my mother who is 76 (although looks much younger) and she rocked her dark jeans in a polished and smart casual way. She also had a great pair of white jeans that renewed my determination to find some for myself.

Hope you can find a great pair!

Hear! Hear! You can look elegant and polished in jeans (stick with dark washes if you're not sure) at any age.

And if you ever have any doubts, you could always post a picture on the forum. We promise we'll be honest;-)

Thank you ladies for the encouragement and for the good advice about colour, cut and length. I will go looking for a good fitting pair!
