This Ann Taylor dress from consignment and Stuart Weitzman shoes from the same store are up for consideration. The dress will need the straps taken up a bit but the exposed chest area will be pretty much as you see it. The dress hem could also be let down about an inch. Please tell me what you think!! I need objective opinions on the dress in general on me, on wearing it for a rehearsal dinner, and on the shoes.
The shoes are comfortable and a good height, but are they too outdated?
Will I fit in for an East coast wedding or embarrass my son? I need help!!
The wedding is August 10th. I'm also going to need lots of help for what to wear to the wedding. I had the dress I'd thought I might wear shortened and don't like the results. Panic time!
The concern about about looking appropriate has been pretty common with women in my family for ages as we are late adapters in the rather rural Heartland and fear looking like a country bumpkin when out of our element.
Should I add a necklace to fill in the neckline? Any suggestions for jewelry? Or wear it as shown. The straps will fall over my shoulders if not shortened.
Angie, an 11! Thank you! Your opinion means the world to me.
Joy-- you look classy and elegant in this ensemble! I can completely relate to your anxieties re: looking acceptable for the fashionable coast. I grew up in rural iowa, then spent 15 years in various east coast cities. No matter where you will be on the coast, a simple black dress and those beautiful shoes will fit in perfectly. I echo angie on pearls as your adornment of choice--can never go wrong! I might suggest a simple wrap in the event of a chilly evening. Nordstroms carries a rainbow of cashmere blend wraps that would polish this off beautifully!
Joy, you look absolutely stunning! I adore this dress in itself and in particular on you, and like Mary, I think it broadcasts timeless elegance and chic. I'm with Angie on the pearls, but I don't even think they are necessary. A wrap would also be a good idea.
Joy, I like Mary's suggestion of a bare neck and earrings - but this really depends on whether you will wear your specs. No statement earrings if you wear your cool specs.
A little tuxedo jacket will make the best covering topper.
I'll probably have to wear my specs, so a pearl necklace or bracelet it will be. I love the idea of a little tuxedo jacket, Angie. Any ideas as to where I can find one? A topper may not be necessary as the dinner will be outside, weather permitting, on a terrace overlooking a beautiful river. It's always good to be prepared.
In the week after the wedding, DH, DS from Tokyo and I will be in NYC. Is this dress appropriate for a Broadway musical?
Another option for a topper is a loose weave sweater in a metallic. A friend borrowed mine to wear with a similar cut of dress to a wedding and reunion and it looked great. They had an article in Lucky on using the metallic sweater as an alternative to the tried and true pashmina. My friend said she rec'd compliments on it and was really happy she went that route.
This dress is so beautiful on you Joy - what a fantastic find! And the shoes add the perfect touch of elegance. This really is a smashing outfit on you. I love the idea of pearls and a bracelet for accessories - do you have a little clutch that will work?
Another option you could try jewellery wise would be to add a brooch to the knot of the sash. Also, like Shannon, I am curious to know if you already have a handbag in mind?
This a beautiful outfit and you look elegant. I too am curious on the handbag. I think this outfit would be perfect for the theatre.
Your son will be very proud.
Joy, this is so stunning on you! Elegant, chic, and so sophisticated. You will be perfectly attired and I know you will choose the perfect accessories. You have a lovely neck and shoulders and I think you can either go with or without a necklace. Congratulations on your son's upcoming wedding!
Thank you so much for the styling and accessorizing ideas for this dress. As for a bag, I probably need to find one. I have a black snake clutch and a black matte satin clutch with large bow of the same fabric. Since we will be flying I hope to use one small dressy bag for all festivities if possible.
The dress and shoes are perfect Joy and I just want to repeat Angie's words "timeless elegance and immense insatiable fabness" because that's exactly how I feel about this look on you.
What a great find! You will look totally appropriate for an East coast wedding rehearsal dinner or a Broadway show and so I say, have a wonderful time, my dear!!!
Joy, your dress is gorgeous and so are the shoes! Your son will be so proud and happy, I'm sure. I'm a pearl lover, too, and yet you've received some really interested jewelry options here. What color bag do you think you want? Enjoy! You will be adored on ANY coast.
