It's that interesting... But I'm gonna be that 40-yr-old living in mom's proverbial basement. Need to go back to school and do something different professionally (yes, that basically means it's time to become a full-fledged computer programmer, lol, stop messing about with tech writing). Me and Lilypuppo will be making the nursery suite our apartment ... It's as big as my city apartment and has TWO closets... So one step backwards, but a step up! Ahaha! I'm tempted to do up a mini kitchen to keep my diet coke from being contaminated by my mum's soy cheese... Anyways, I'm getting my custom closet back which is exciting... but you know, all that organization... that means a certain loss of space that could have been crammed with clothes... And I don't think I want to do the rolling clothes rack thing like I did as a teen... I'm wondering if I can make myself purge socks???

hey, its the new, hip thing to do so you will be in good company! Lots of articles written about it lately........The Mr and I moved in with my parents a few years ago, it started out as a temporary-6 month gig while we saved for our 1st house down payment....Then I started Grad School, and the Mr realized he needed to go back to school. My folks said "stay here until you are both finished" and then..poof! It was 3 1/2 years later!

We had a small bedroom and an attached office--and put everything else in storage. It was tight quarters but worked. It was the childhood home I grew up in, so it became the subject of my thesis as well. Nice summer evenings were spent outside in the vineyard drinking cocktails & watching the ferries head to and from Seattle...not too shabby. I did most all the cooking and my parents enjoyed it, mom in her 60s was tired of the kitchen. Many of our friends were jealous and could not even image spending a week living as adults with their parents. We had come from a 4 bedroom house & we have lots of studio supplies and other "stuff" so after a while I was feeling the stress from the lack of space.

But it was the best decision we ever made! We had wonderful times with my folks and we will always treasure that time together. They are now inching into their 70s and their health is rocky, so we enjoy every time we get to see them. And the irony is we ended up buying a house 5 minutes from theirs!

That's really nice. My mum is already in her 70s. I moved up to be closer, and if I moved away to another state or something, well, it's hard to imagine her not coming with me. She came over every day until recently and sat with Lilypup and used the Internet. My family is like that I guess. My mom's whole family followed her out west from Maryland originally... Not just my grandparents but her brothers and their wives... Lol. Not sure she was expecting that!

Congratulations on your return to school - sounds like a great move and I'm sure you will enjoy it. And you are definitely not alone in moving back....it's very common here, especially because of the high rents.

Is her place closer to the campus also? Will Lilypup have a good dog park? Can you get the Internet for you AND her?

Haha, Suz! It's you and me in the backpack crowd Lilypup will have a backyard for the first time ever is what's what (!) We'll be closer to one of the good dog parks, but they're all a drive, so that's one half dozen. The biggest thing for Lily will be she'll have two pets now... Me AND my mom, lol.

The net is something else. My mum's computer now won't turn on... I've never seen anyone with computer problems like my mum. It's amazing that she worked at a national lab and had email before there was a web... Lol. Okay. I lie. My dad was worse. A Fortran programmer who would say terrible things to me like 'I broke the Internet'! Like a reverse Al Gore...

Exciting news Rachy. Going back to school is always an adventure. Lilypup will be in dog heaven with a back yard and two pets. And two closets! WOW!

Ooooh! Congrats on going back to school! I went to graduate school in my 30s, and there's no doubt in my mind that I got SO much more out of it than the newly-minted "adults" in my classes. I was the only one with any life experience to relate with the courses. I would so go back for another Master's if I could take the time.

Right? I wish I could go back and do 8th grade again. I'd be a brilliant mathematician now.

the MR was the oldest one in his class when he went back to school.... his first career was as a baker, then photographer and now hes a web developer.... nothing like a little real life experience to help you really focus and find you want from school! he was studying hard and for the first time in his life actually enjoying school....while he watched the 18yr olds copying each others papers...it was the best thing he ever did...

and 2 closets! that is something to cheer about......more shoe room.....

Awesome-- I enjoyed moving back in with my folks after being away for a good while, but we always had a special relationship that was much more symbiotic than parent-child.

Two closets and a yard! Lilypup is going to be so spoiled . . . just don't let mum drive you nuts being her computer guru!

All I heard was white noise and "TWO CLOSETS". Seriously, though, I think this sounds like a wonderful change. Personally, I think there is something really special about living in close family groups if all are agreeable. I hope this is a perfect change for you. All the best!

Lol. I know. I should be thinking about my C+ homework (that's a joke... It's why I have to go back to school)... But all I can think about is TWO CLOSETS! I do like knowing my family to the third cousins...

I could be a perpetual student -- I like going to school, and I kind of miss it. A decade after grad school, I started going back to college for architecture and interior design courses, and I stopped when my mom passed away. Now, seven years later, I wonder if I should go back and take some more! You've got me thinking...

I too have the dream to code. Made a 15 year detour into network operations due purely to finding a cheap, short college program that led directly to a job... and here I've stayed very comfortably, but wondering what else could be.
Can we do this in our 40s? Sounds like you're already in the industry and know what you're getting into. Might have to PM you to pick your brain, but I'm just at the beginning of considering this.

Yo, rock it, Rachy! Four of the women in my family have gone back for advanced degrees lately: one has finished, I'm in final thesis revisions, two are getting married and still carrying on. If we can do it, you can do it!!! How fortunate you are to be able to stay so connected with your mother and extended family; the closets are a bonus for sure. Will you be Mom's personal help desk?
