Are these boots too good to be true?

For as long as I can remember, I've been looking for long, relatively flat boots in a burgundy-type colour. I just came upon these that sound like they fit the bill, at least on paper. They'd fit my godzilla calves, and they're even on sale! But of course, there could be a huge flaw in this: the colour description "garnet" sounds like it could be wide open and not the sort of shade I'm after. Can you all let me know what this garnet colour actually looks like, and whether the boots are even attractive?

Michelle, I do not think it's the color you're after. It's quite bright. Hard to explain but kind of a pinky red. I think you're after a darker, deeper red. What calf size do you need?

Maya is right- it's more of a raspberry color on my monitor. They come in black and brown, too, though.

Hmmm. Yeah Maya's right, I was envisioning a darker red. More of a wine colour. Not too bright, but something that could look sharp with most of the winter colours I wear. Is the raspberry colour ugly? If it's nice I could potentially give these a try, at that price.
Khris, I think they're out of the black and brown. I only saw the garnet left.
Maya, my calves are absurdly big, about a 17 or maybe even a little more at the moment. Argh.

I think the color is a bit bright, like a true raspberry pink. I think that it might be difficult to coordinate outfits with these boots unless everything else was neutral. A burgundy would be much more versatile in my opinion. Suede is also high maintenance if you are planning on wearing them in the snow or rain. We will be on the lookout for you!!

It's not an ugly color, but as Jean said, definitely not very versatile. They certainly make a loud statement.

Can you wear boots that have a 16" circumference if they have stretch?

Thanks, Jean and Maya. I'm definitely not after loud. I don't want to draw more attention to my legs than necessary, and I would definitely want my boots to be versatile with limited scope for fashion faux-pas. Thanks for keeping your eyes open for me while I continue with this hunt!
Maya, a 16-calf boot would probably have to have a decent amount of stretch to work. Are you talking about full-stretch boots or just ones that zip up that have an elastic that provides some give? Do you know of a pair somewhere?

I mean the ones with the elastic gore (couldn't think of the word). Pull on stretch boots are annoying. I have chicken calves and even I find them difficult. I am pretty well versed in skinny calf brands since that is my issue, but I have to admit I'm clueless on wide calf boots. Here are some starting points...

It might be helpful to just search for burgundy or red boots on Zappos and see what the various calf widths are and if they have any stretch to them. I also think it's too early to really get a lot of variety even for people with average calves, let alone us!

Thanks for the links. Cherry red could still potentially be fun. I'll check it out.
There's a fabulous site for wide-calf boots called widewidths.com (I believe Angie blogged about it in the past). They usually just have black or brown, but I know they're geting their new stuff in for September. Hopefully I'll have more luck then, but if I find something before that, hurrah!

Nice boots. Rotten luck about the colour. Michelle, have you measured your calves at their widest? Are you sure they are 17 inches? I have a client who was successfully sorted at duo boots with an 18.5 inch calf. She was deliriously happy with her purchase and wore her new boots all Autumn and Winter long. Based on her reaction, they could be a good way to go.

Hmmm. I think Dawn had good service with duo boots too. It’s a UK brand that fits boots to all calf measurements.

Angie, welcome back!! Hope you had a great vacation!
I'll have to do a proper calf measurement, but I'm sure I'm between a 17 and 18. I once tried on a pair of boots with a 18-3/4-inch calf and they were absolutely enormous on me. I could get my whole hand in between the boot and my leg and didn't have to unzip them to get them off. You have a practiced eye, though. Did you have an estimate based on pics you've seen?
I know of Duo and have heard nothing but raves about them. They're crazy expensive once you do conversions to Canadian dollars + delivery charges, so I'm investigating other options first. Ideally I'd like to have two pairs of boots, one burgundy or similar and one black. I'm sort of thinking lower-heeled burgundy ones for every day and higher-heeled black ones to dress certain outfits up, but I would welcome your thoughts on this. Would you advise against either of these colours?
