Any users of "velvet" hangers?

I'm trying to consolidate into a single closet instead of spreading out all over the house, and it occurs to me that my wooden hangers, although they look great, take up a lot of room. I was thinking of switching the the very slim "velvet" hangers that I see advertised, but I'm a little leery after reading some reviews.

Do any of you use these hangers? Do you like them? Any recommendations re: brands or places to buy?

I like them!

I have 100 of them I got mine from Costco. $16 for 50.

Crazy timing on this post! I just walked in the door about 45 minutes ago with 50 of them from TJ Max. I have only put half of them in the closet so far but they do take up way less room than my wooden hangers (which I love and hate to see go) and my clothes aren't sliding off like they do on the wood ones. They also have little notches for small straps, but the clothes grip the velvet so well that the notches aren't really that necessary! I am impressed thus far. I am keeping the wooden ones for jackets and for my husband's clothes...

ETA: they were $15 for 25 (so Lyn got a much better deal) and I love the purple/grey color!

I use those, I buy light colored ones at T J Maxx. So far they have worked great (I've had them about 8 months). I still use smooth wooden hangers for coats or jackets with a little weight that I don't want to crease, but especially for anything light weight or strappy or prone to slip off regular hangers the velvet works fine to keep them in place. They let you fit a lot more in your closet, so I have to remember not to go overboard and smoosh stuff together just because I can.

Oh and they also seem to be easier on fabric that can snag (open weave knits and the like)

PS: Costco is amazing!!!!!

I've used them for about two years now and no problems! The only problem is I only have 100 and I have more than 100 pieces of clothes so I might have to buy another box :p

I tried them but did not care for them because they left more shoulder marks than the plastic store-like hangers. My husband now uses them.

I have a ton of them. I bought two boxes at Costco and then needed more so bought some at Home Sense (like TJ Maxx). I also bought some special ones for pants. I love them. I keep the wooden hangars for the front entry closet.

I have used them for 4 or 5 years. I absolutely love mine. I have a wardrobe that is probably 4 feet across. That is where all my hanging stuff goes. If it weren't for these hangers, it wouldn't be enough room for me. I stack them too hanging down from one another. My first set, before they were actually in stores, was Joy Mangano on one of the shopping channels ( I still have that original set ) . But I have gotten more recent ones at both Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond ( 2 years ago ) and the velvet started to rub off a bit. Not a big deal. I would not advise getting a super light color because handling them can cause them to look a bit dingy. I have purple. My kids had blue and lime green. ( Like it matters !!! LOL )

I use them and love them, especially great for keeping more petite proportioned clothing from stretching funny. Also use them to help keep shape when air dying stuff. I have the white ones from Target

I use them for woven blouses or dresses. I also hang sweaters over them, but not in the usual way--I fold the sweater in half and drape it around the hanger, to avoid shoulder marks. For knits, I prefer hangers that are not as thin and have more rounded ends. And I use wooden hangers for jackets.

I had some and hated them. Way too fussy to get the clothes to hang right on them. My clear hangers are so much smoother and quicker to use.

Like Carter, they made me nuts. It seemed like far too much work to get the clothes to hang straight on the hangers. Slipping clothes on clear hangers is much faster and easier. I'd suggest you buy a few and live with them for a month or so before committing to switching your closet over.

Huh, I find them a lot easier to use than clear hangers, where stuff fell off all the time. I have the velvet flocked ones from BB&B, Real Simple brand. I did find that I preferred the 'heavy duty' ones to the regular shirt hangers, as they are sturdier and don't bend when you hang something heavy like a long dress on them.

I switched to flocked ones from QVC, color coded by capsule to make dressing in the morning easier. I still use padded one for looser knits but also fold sweaters over the flocked ones on occasion.

I have a few (from Target). I like them for slippery things like dresses with wide necklines and silk blouses. I wouldn't hang coats or blazers on them as I think the narrow profile might distort structured shoulders, especially on heavier items. For those I use wood.

I also don't mind the cheapo plastic tubular hangers to be honest. (Except for slippery items). I use them to hang pants too (folded over the bottom bar).

I can relate. I have the wooden hangers but when I down-sized my house my closet got down-sized too and the wooden hangers just took up so much room. Now, I use a combination of the velvet hangers for anything that tends to slip off and I use white plastic hangers from Target for the rest.

I love them and have moved all the plastic tube hangers to DH and other closets. I also bought these hooks that allow you to layer a few hangers (Bed Bath and Beyond). My closet is small so layering vertically works for me.

I also had to transfer from my wooden hangers. I prefer the ones with the hanging bar rather than just the shirt hangers. I got mine on ebay at similar price to the deals other Fabbers did....

Having an efficient and a user friendly closet! I bought the kind that have a small hook below the hanger part because it can give you a lot more
Options. You can use that hook to
Attach the belt that you will be wearing with outfit or a scarf. But what I find that I do the most is that I use it to hang another item. For example in my closet I have all of my white shirts together. The top one hangs on the closet rod, the next one hangs on the hook of the hanger that is holding the Whitt shirt that us hanging on the closet rod. The next hangar a(holding another white shirt should hang off of he second hanger which is hanging off if the first hangar! Get it??? It's easy! Also, you can buy the softer and wider shoulder "pads" that will snap right on to the hanger and that way you don't have to worry about stretching our knitwear!
One last reason that I love them - my clothes stay on them! I never have to worry about clothes falling off the hangar.

Mary, I'm thinking of going over to these type of hangers too. I have a couple of them already in my sewing room for customers garments, but I have discovered something about size of them. A lot of them are just available in a 45cm width, which for a standard women's garment could be too wide and therefore explain the problem of shoulder marks that have been mentioned in the comments above. I think a size 42cm (16.5") is what's needed and that's what I've been looking for and I found a UK company for me online to get it from. Very few women have shoulder widths of over 16". I've measured enough of my customers to know this for a fact.

Diane that's the exact reason I haven't bought some. I picked some up in tkmaxx a few months ago and thought they looked huge! I slipped onto them a top I was buying and the hanger was poking out of the sides of the sleeves! If you don't mind sharing which company have you found to buy smaller ones from? X

I have some generic type ones that I bought from a sale box in a Walmart aisle, just to experiment. I think it was about $5 for 10 or 12. What I've used about half of them for - and been very pleased so far - is to drape scarves over the bottom bar (I guess mine are suit hangers?). I sort them more or less according to which ones I might think of together. Then I can just pick up the whole hanger and hold it against what I want to wear. This is important for me because I want to see things in natural light and I can swing around the hanger with scarves and nothing slips off. I also use this system for purging orphans. I have a wide array of scarves and if not one of them seems to work with a known orphans, I give up and admit that my wardrobe
has moved in a different direction.

I had a look online for even narrower ones, maybe 40cm wide, but drew a bit of a blank. I think you can get them from China or USA on eBay, but think of the P+P!

I also have a box from Costco. Got them because another friend swears by them, and asked me to pick up a box for her. So far I've only been moving pieces over that slide off my plastic hangers.

I have been using the ones from Bed, Bath & Beyond with the little hooks and do exactly what Marley does. By hanging all the striped buttondowns together, etc. I can find things so much easier. I fold sweaters over the hanger. Absolutely love these hangers!
I also use the skirt / pant hangers that hold 4. One holds Halogen seamed pencil skirts;)

I like mine -- I gradually converted most of my closet to them over the last few years. I have broken one or two by hanging something too heavy on them, so I keep jackets and heavier pieces on wooden hangers. I like the way my clothes do not slip off them, and they hold shoulder shapes well for some knits that I hang. Plus I can fit more in my closet, and the uniform hangers mean that all items hang at the same level and are more visible in my closet.

I don't care for the ones with hooks because I don't hang extra pieces vertically, and if you hang two of those side by side, they can get stuck together.

I love mine. I switched all of mine a year or two ago. I buy the Joy something or other from Target.

I really love that I can fold my pants/jeans and hang them without resulting in creasing. With plastic or wooden hangers, my pants/jeans always got creased, so I used to hang them straight down with clips. That took up a lot of room!

I also don't get any shoulder puckers, AT ALL. I hang ALL my tops.

I've had them for 5yrs and have bought them from QVC ,BJs and Sam's Club. They break! All brands have had issues with the metal hanger pulling out and breaking off. I've added many of my wooden hangers back in.

Love mine! I have mostly Target hangers, although I wish I had bought the version from BB&B. I have some with an added piece that lets me hang multiple hangers vertically, so I hang my lightweight tops in vertical pairs. I think the simple hangers are a bit too lightweight for a lot of items, so I've purchased more of the "suit hangers" even for sweaters. These larger hangers fit my more fluid clothing well. If I were tiny, they might be too big for more fitted shirts. Things do occasionally "stick" to the velvet, but they also don't fall off.
