An interesting website I've become obsessed with

I live in a desert, but we've had A LOT of rain in the last couple months. On the tv news they have shown graphs of flooding at various locations. This website shows points in the US where there are gauges. After you enlarge the map, you can click on one of the points and see what's going on. The color indicates the level of flooding, if any. It shows the actual and the forecast. I know I'm a nerd, but I think this is fascinating.

Diana, thanks for the USGS link. I've bookmarked it. I live in the third most seismically active state, so that info is interesting and important. I've been using this seismo site, which uses USGS data.

Re flooding, they closed the schools today. And on the news they just mentioned a water rescue at a particular intersection. Wherever you live, don't drive through floodwater!!!

I checked out all the flood points in my area. All the creeks and rivers are at flood stage!

These are interesting sites to ponder.

I have recently learned about the Cascadia subduction zone from an incredible New Yorker Article. Also interesting to see a quake in Tennessee closer to where I live. I will have to learn more about that.

Brie, I don't know where you live, but the New Madrid (MO) earthquake is famous for its magnitude, estimated as high as 7.9. It was in the early 19th century. Do you have a link to the New Yorker article?

I grew up about 15 miles from San Francisco, but never felt an earthquake until I moved to Nevada. Several years ago we experienced a "swarm". There were hundreds of quakes in a three month period, but most were very very small. One was 4.4 that jolted me out of bed. We wondered if it was going to indicate a much larger quake. (Knock on wood) it didn't.

I used the flood gauges sites a lot in my last year on Caddo lake. It flooded 2 spring seasons in a row, the second time was pretty epic and definitely one for the area history books.

Now, I've had to learn about the earthquake sites, because we feel quite a few of the Oklahoma ones where I live.

I'm afraid to move from this address, because I wonder what sort of plague monitoring site I'll have to learn if I do LOL

Cynthia, if you find a plague monitoring site, let me know. We have Mormon crickets coming a little closer every year. I wish I were joking. I'd post a picture but they creep me out too much.
