I have a question about your trench, Angie. Online it says the color is Off-White. From the photo online it looks very white to me, though. How would you describe it?

Also, I was re-reading your post about Spring Trenches, and you said that some trenches work for Spring and Fall, but I was wondering if you thought the Soia & Kyo one was the sort of trench that could work for both seasons or if there are certain details to look for? I'm thinking of investing in a trench because that's probably the heaviest jacket I would need here (all I have right now is a wool coat and it's too heavy for this climate so I don't wear it). If I got one, I'd like to get one I could wear "year round," since our spring trench weather lasts maybe 3 months--it'd be sort of a waste otherwise.

I am wondering the same thing too. I have a black trench, but would like a colored one that would work for both spring&fall. And that white one that Angie has is superb!

Does that beautiful Soia & Kyo trench flatter an hourglass as well, or does it have too many buttons and wide lapels for a larger bust?

I love the top right one in silver. It would look good on a hourglass figure IMO. I can't find where it is from though.

I think (but correct me if I am wrong) but a nice red trenchcoat would work for both autumn and spring, like the second one in the link posted above. I believe that is also a soia & kyo trench if I am not mistaken.

Does Soia & Kyo tend to run small? On Nordie's website it says a Medium is a 4-6 and a Large is 8-10.

I have a Soia & Kyo wool coat ( not trench I know) in a similar belted style in XS, and fits well, even a tiny bit roomy - plenty of space for sweaters underneath. So based on that I'd say no. But trenches could be different. Let's see if Angie would chime in on which size her trench is.

The trench I have is a rich cream, but it is the “off-white” option on the site. Photo isn’t that accurate.

This is a very warm trench because it's lined with wool hound’s-tooth and very fine quilting. Our Spring’s are very cold so it’s perfect. You’re probably looking for a more lightweight trench, Ana. My Autumn trench is lightweight because our Autumns are milder than our Spring’s. Insane but true.

Hmm. Your trench needs are very specific. I like the idea of a colour or neutral that’s not black for you specifically Ana. When do you think you will wear your trench? Nov to Feb?

Unfortunately, the sizing of this outstanding Canadian brand is not consistent. My style runs small, but I have clients in other styles and some of them run a little bigger. I’m little help I’m afraid.

That's exactly the time frame I'd wear a trench, Angie--November to February and possibly into early March, depending on temperature. I'm really looking for a good lighter weight coat that I could pull on anytime that it was cold enough to warrant one (average winter temps here are 50s, sometimes 40s but hardly ever below that). And if there is nasty weather, it's rainy--no snow or sleet. I thought a trench would be good because I think they are chic and classic. Because I wouldn't wear it a whole bunch, it would probably stay nice enough to not need replacing for about 3 or more years.

Do you think a trench is good or is there something that would work better? Like I said, I already have a heavy wool coat that is nice if the weather were to truly turn horrific on an odd day.

I just want to address the issue of the collar style on the red trench shown in Julia's post. Although it looks amazing when it is all buttoned up, it probably would not be so great to just throw on and go.
My wool winter coat has the same collar style and I always have to button and tie everything up before I go out. Looks great all done up if you don't mind having to do that every time.

The red trench is indeed Soïa & Kyo Aisha (the one I LOVE), and you're probably right San, it would look best all buttoned up, so maybe it's not suited for some of you with warmer climates for much of the year.
Over here, summers are really not that long, and even then we have quite a few chillier and rainy days, and on those days I would wear it all buttoned up anyway (I'm always cold;-)

Maybe someone has other suggestions besides a trenchcoat Ana. I for one like them very much, because they add immediate style to any outfit, but you'd definitely need something lightweight then. (odd that I waited until this year to buy my first one..)

Inge, the S&K trench is a deep blue-ish red. I have seen it. But there are of course no guarantees that you’ll fancy the colour.

Stick with the idea of a trench, Ana. You’ll enjoy it.

Do you think they will have lighter weight trenches available in the fall, or should I be looking now? And what exactly should I look for as far as what constitutes a multi-season trench? Is it just color, or is it detailing as well?

It's the colour, thickness and sleeve length. Autumn trenches are always long sleeved and they'll be loads of black and brown around at that time of year.

I feel that you could benefit from waiting, Ana. You don’t know what your Winter wardrobe is doing yet! For others that live in colder climates like Nicole, Inge and myself, we'll get loads of use out of trenches, jackets and coats and it’s less of a point when we shop for them. What do you think?

Sounds like having a few in different styles and colors would be fun, like having more than one cardigan.
I never really thought about having a trench before but now I am beginning to want one or 2.
Maybe, Ana, you will see one that you love and know that it is the right one to start your collection.

Sorry to pile up questions but I will also be looking for a new trench this fall and couldn't miss the topic! If I wanted to get something water-resistant and practical, I would probably have to go for black or khaki. Is that a right assumption or do you think there will be more colors this fall? I always felt black trenches make me look like a witch, what is the best way to accesorize them to avoid that? Oris it a particular material that looks that way? And I know you don't recommend khaki, but would it actually be a better option for me (I am olive-skinned and can wear some of khaki shades okay)?

Right Angie I am way behind on the having trench coats idea. I grew up in Southern California and really only wore a cardigan once in a great while. Then I spent the 20 yrs as construction mamma. So I have a lot to learn even though I am pushing 54. This great group is really helping. I would like to talk to you also about a consultation so how does one go about that process?
I will start a new thread on with that question.

Angie, can a cream trench ( like yours) be worn in the fall too? I'll definitely be in the market for a new one come fall ( I already have a black one) and am craving cream. And, for some reason I also like the idea of belted red patent, but would that be dated soon?

Yes Tanya. Cream is perfect for Autumn too. I'd stick to patent trim instead of an entire item of clothing in patent. You'll tire of it I think.

Decision time darling. A beautiful piece that’s for sure. Two things:

o Do you want a cropped trench? I’m not sure you do.
o Cotton twill is a Summer fabric. You want a more canvas-y look that will take you through cold weather.

But good search though!

Thanks for the response, Angie. I was wondering about the length and fabric, too. I like the funnel neck, it's really interesting and still looks good opened, and of course, LOVE the color. The twill wouldn't be waterproof though, and I was iffy about hip length. Ideally, I'd want something in that color, with an interesting neckline, but in a waterproof (or at least water resistant) fabric, and it'd hit about mid thigh. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for what will come this fall.

That sounds like a better plan, Ana. A mid-thigh length trench is a versatile choice. Water resistant is a tall order, but no harm in trying. Funnel necks and long hair. Hmmm. I don’t remember whether this works or annoys. It will depend on the cut of the funnel neck. My fingers are crossed too!
